Port O'Connor Texas
I'm AD USCG and may be getting stationed in Port O'Connor Texas. It seems that it's remote from what I'm used to (Jacksonville, FL) Anyone know anything about Port O'Connor or the area. Places to live (apartments or houses to rent) things to do etc.

I hope you like to fish. That is in the middle of east/west Matagorda Bay & some fine redfish, trout & flounder fishing.
I'm near nw Houston & know of alot of the shooting ranges & gunshops.
Perhaps a watering hole or two.

The only watering hole I can recall in Port O'Conner was the Hurricane Inn, interesting little bar up on stilts. This from my off-shore oil days. Things may have changed a little in the past 30 years though.
If it is still there tell them the guy who helped stop the place from being burnt to the ground by a disgruntled patron says "hi". Fun story there.

Aint much there . Fishing is good . Locals are mostly a bunch of ne're de wells . There are some great folks there too . Hurricane's been closed for many years . Get a pretty good influx of Houston / City folks during summer . Probably 4 - 5 local bars . Drugs are rampant . Don't be too trusting , keep your valuables well secured , be aware of your surroundings . Since you know Jax it shouldn't be a problem for ya .

I have no clue about living situations there but let me tell you from many many years of experience that you will be smack dab in the middle of some of the best saltwater fishing in Texas. In shore and off shore. And if off shore is your thang then you are in luck because from there you don't have to run very far to get out.
Bring your fishing gear of prepare to buy some when you get here. I envy you.

Excellent fishing, giant mosquitos, and considerably more civilized than it used to be. There are rental homes and summer of course is the busy season, lots of well to do Houstonians weekend there. I'm in port aransas, PM me, I'll buy you lunch if you get down here.( 65 miles south of O'connor). Matagorda Island has a lot of history, but it's small, and the natives are kinda funny. The old Hurricane Junction and Maddens were both joints to keep an eye on the door, and more than a few shrimpers vs. crew boat vs. Coasties battles were fought there. The good old days...
Here's good seafood and Victoria isn't too far away for city things, so I hope to have the chance to meet you. I'll PM if you want, with a realtor or two, but the other guardsmen are probably pretty savvy about housing, it ain't that big. I'd venture to say it's cheaper than Jax.

And by the way, there's at least one really fine gunshop/ smith in El Campo TX not far away, and a fine shop in Victoria and lots of room to shoot and pig hunting galore!! Break out the .44mag and the .41mag.
Plenty white tail and dove too.

Pt Lavaca will probably be your best housing target or Victoria.
You best get used to small town living---which is not bad, BTW.
You will find things you like and dislike.
It will be a learning curve involved.
Blessings

Port Lavaca...home of the Fightin' Sand Crabs.
One thing I remember vividly about PO'C, the clear water is only a few hundre yards from shore. East of there the silt from the Sabine, Calcaseu, Atachafalaya and Mississippi rivers cloud the Gulf for miles. Saw the biggest dang Devil Fish off PO'C...water was super clear and we could watch quarters drop till they hit bottom (30' or so).

I love some small town living, and it will help with my bank account too, because the wife won't be getting Starbucks or any of that stuff daily haha. She will have to get used to it a little more than me. I like my peace and quiet.
