Default Complaint

I just want to get something off my chest. How many of you have started a post, you are the O.P., and were expecting everyone who responded to you to stay on subject? I have had a few posts lately that I thought would be material that could inform others of something I thought important. The post starts out O.K. then someone will post material that has little to do with the original post. By the end the material has nothing to do with the beginning. Is this common? Am I just nit-picking? I believe that if I want to comment on something and it doe's not relate to the material, I will start a new thread.
Another problem I have run into is the rudeness. Why? If you feel you need to hurt some ones feelings to make your point, then it doesn't belong here.
I have had Handejector tell me not to let them get under my skin. He is right. I have let rude posters dictate how I would respond. NOT ANYMORE. If your response is rude you might as well leave it off because I will not respond.
Thank you for letting me vent!!

Tlay - "high jacking" a thread is pretty common here and some Members are bigger abusers than others. I'm not sure why in happens but as Lee suggested, don't let it bother you.
I've made too many friends here and have learned volumes from the Vets - to me, that's the most important thing

Heck, I'm kind of afraid to post a reply.....cause I already know this thread will go off topic. That's just how things work on here and in life in general.

This forum has always had a reputation of being one of the most polite and civil forums on the interwebs. It is still right up there with the best, but I have seen a deterioration over the past year or so. Many of the old timers rarely post anymore and there has been many new comers who need to get on the wagon and shape up.
Rudeness and thread crapping don't belong here.

People post how their thought process works. Whats seems completely irrelevant to you may make sense to the poster. The next poster adds to it and so on until the tread is nowhere near what ut started out to be.

For instance, the tread talking about airlines has one guy going off about todays lazy youth. How that is relevant to the popularity of one job from 1960 to taday i have no idea but it makes sense to the poster. There are no Maytag repairmen or milk man but that doesnt equate to lazy youth it equates to a changing industry and job market.

Sometimes people really do just go off somewhere completely random. No biggy. No different then a OP posting a question and getting 4 pages of the exact same answers. You'd think by post 10 its understandable

German Rabbit Stew Recipe - A Recipe for Swabian Rabbit Stew | Hunter Angler Gardener Cook

Sorry....couldn't resist...

I got all worked up about it for a while, but have come to believe that posts running astray are for the most part unintentional (unlike the rabbit recipe I just put up. It really is good)

Kinda like the old telephone game from kindergarten, by the time the message got to the other side of the room, it was nothing like the original.

As far as rude or abusive posts, that's what ignore is for.

It's the spelling and grammatical errors which used to burn my toast. They're still there, however. I just don't read them.

Or stated another way:
There still their, I just don't read them.........anymore.

I agree with the OP and I'm probably unknowingly guilty of that at times. I in fact went back and deleted a post of mine in another thread after reading this complaint. Good wake up call OP!

I wouldn't call it hijacking as much as I would call it thread drift (syn - conversation drift).

This is not a class in systemic logic. It's a social gathering. As such, no conversation holds a straight line. People add comments, and they may be:
  • Completely relevant
  • Relevant with some exceptions
  • Barely relevant
  • Mars/Orion Nebula comparison/contrast

These are facts of the web/life/social interfacing.

Vive la difference!!

Please pass the ketchup.

I know an old coot that drags every conversation back to himself and flying.Hes been doing it for the 50 years Ive known him.Now that I'm becoming old,I take perverse pleasure in dragging those conversations into all sorts of random areas 😄

While I'm essentially sympathetic, I'd advise you to meditate on this timeless question:

"Can a leopard change his socks?"

I think you'll understand what I'm hinting at.

Threads drift, just like normal conversation does.

Often a post will snap it back to the original intent.

Threads have lives of their own, you can guide them but in the end they will goes as they will.

Participants on this forum are much better at staying on topic than participants in many other forums I've been on.

Even in "The Lounge" which is more likely to see thread drift, it's not very pronounced.

There's thread-drift and there's hijacking. I'm inclined to sort of appreciate the natural evolution of a thread, but hijacking can really irritate me. But I do try to keep a lid on my irritation, as we're all here for fun and enjoyment, and Lord knows I'm not innocent.

What he said, it seems to me that the rude posts are usually by people that have a low post count. They're used to the rudeness and hostility of other forums. This forum's a whole 'nuther animal.

As a new member of this forum, I was very pleased to see that almost every thread I read was filled with friendly, informative responses. Most other forums I have read or been active on are filled with ignorant jackasses who who contribute nothing and simply annoy others.

This has been my only gun forum for a while, for the very reason that this one is far more civil and, except when things get silly in the Lounge, pretty focused. Always informative.

I see vastly less willful highjacking, and certainly less rudeness and "if you don't carry this style weapon in this caliber with this ammo you aren't worthy to call yourself a man" garbage. Or "if you question my views you're a complete idiot" stuff.

I'm still very new and have made mistakes--been called down by Lee a couple of times--but I do try to keep civil and contribute where I can. I like it here, a lot.

I really like banana nut bread.

Do you let the bananas get a bit brown before you use them or use them bright yellow??

I have been on here for years! Everyone has been guilty of thread drift, if not outright high jacking over the years. However all of us need to be cognizant of the fact that threads should remain a "pure" as possible. It is very easy to start a new thread!

I started a thread about my recent purchase of a tumbler and its operation a couple days ago.
I intended it to be informational for people contemplating it use.

Got most replies in how others used THEIR equipment. So I got drowned out pretty quick. Not one single thanks....or KMA.

We get bananas with the intention of eating them. When we don't get to them in time and they start turning brown and squishy they're just right for baking.

The Reloading Forum is famous for that. Ask the question: "I have narrowed my choices down to progressive press Models "A" or "B". To those of you who own one or the other, please discuss the upsides and downsides."

It takes about 3.4 responses before the inevitable "do yourself a favor and forget this progressive press nonsense" post derails the whole thing.

There are drifts which I do expect but you are right - there are a few out there who I allowed to get under my skin. I barked back - and as a result got benched for three days.

Then I discovered the "ignore" feature. Talk about power!

What really roasts my cookies is when someone makes a totally non related post just to up their thread count.

Just my opinion... but I don't think that just starting a thread makes anyone the "owner" of the following responses and the direction that the thread may take. That is especially true in the open nature of the Lounge.

That's what makes the Lounge interesting and fun for me... but again that's just me.

However, I have a different thought on some of the other sub-forums. If someone starts a thread on adjusting optical sights for the Model 41... posting a response concerning your recipe for banana-nut bread is probably not appropriate.

Rudeness does not have a place anywhere. But not everyone has to agree with everyone else as long as it expressed reasonably.

Of course I defer to Lee as the arbiter of process and decorum.

So if someone posts about his model 29 and his particular guns accuracy, then I jump in and ask if a model 24 handles much different than a 29 am I hijacking, drifting or just running on my sentences?
