Default The Long Drive.

Well after many years of cajoling and dozens of drives to Montreal, the wife and I depart on what may prove to be an epic trip down I95 from New Jersey to Florida on Friday.
I've driven the route just about twice a year to the Keys in the 90's when time was my own and marriage was just an amusing prospect but haven't made the trip for 15 years....especially not with a wife.
So what to expect, turn offs, cool attractions,BBQ....OH please BBQ?.
I've got the cooler in the back seat, hot sauce in the back pack, fishing rod in the trunk, upgraded charger,WAZE in the I phone,Valentine in place and a John Grisham book on CD.....Wish me luck.

Blues` in ST Mary`s Ga just north of Jacksonville Fla. Best BBQ with the worst looking sauce . Back before Blue, aka Larry, got sent to jail it was great. I heard his family has taken over and it`s back on line again. Try It You`ll Like It .

Smithfield's Barbeque anywhere in NC. I think the one in Smithfield is exit 95 off I 95.
As someone else said, unless you're in a hurry, you might want to avoid I 95. I 81 through PA to I 75 in TN to FL is a nice ride, as is Rt. 17 through Virginia Beach to the East shore of NC.

Epic journey indeed! I can't give you any help with barbecue in that area, or driving tips either. Just take your time & have fun. Be safe!

When you get to Key West, be careful that something that may look like a wife doesn't get in the car with you! Ivan

Thank you gentlemen, but I95 it is as we have a date in Sarasota on Sunday Morning but other than 2 days in Savannah that is already booked,we'll be playing it by ear so forays off the beaten track is entirely possible.
I just want to hit a Waffle House as I've never had the pleasure, good crabs, crawdaddys and BBQ and perhaps find some reasonably priced ammo along the way.

I go down at least once a year, I95 all the way. We stop in Florence SC for one night, then onward, 75-85 all the way once we hit SC. Coming back we usually stop in western NC looking at houses, then 81 thru PA to 84. Ignore the South of the Border signs, that place is a dump.

I'm usually so tired from driving we just go local to the hotel, within 1/4 mile. I think there's 4 exits for Florence, all of them have every sort of food choice you could want. We stay at the last southbound exit in the city, and this year we ate at a steakhouse whose name eludes me.

Well, I-75 Runs right through Sarasota
So getting on it sooner rather than later is a good bet
Also avoiding I-4 is always a Plus

Have you done the air boat ride just out of Ft. Lauderdale? Hang a rt on I think they call that Sawgrass Pkwy and it is out toward the Seminole Indian area. Took my wife years ago and she enjoyed it. She also enjoyed going out by Okeechobee and through the orange farms.

While you are in Savannah, stop by the 8th AirForce Museum in Pooler. You will drive right by the museum on I95, just before you exit to downtown Savannah. The museum is restoring a B17 which you can get up close to and watch them working on it. There are several aircraft on site, and lot's to see. I thought it was fantastic.

You've never eaten at the Waffle House
Good Lord man-what are you saving yourself for??????
Back when we traveled all over with the kids sailing it was Waffle house in the morning and Cracker Barrel in the evening. Consistency was the key-you knew what to expect and you got it every time. Not haught cuisine by any means but good and filling nonetheless. All American breakfast with hash browns at Waffle House and the meat loaf dinner at Cracker Barrel

Yeah, I know...I know, all the scores of times I've driven down to the keys not once did the Waffle House cross my mind but I have friends who tease me about driving 6 hours for Poutine but have yet to have chicken and waffles so I intend to remedy that. Now what to order?
Cracker Barrel I've had as we do have them in New Jersey...ever have a pork roll, fried egg, cheese, SPK on a roll? Jersey Breakfast Sir.

Default Waffle House

Of course Waffle House!! Biscuits and sausage gravy, chicken fried steak, home fries scattered, smothered and covered topped off with a big bowl of grits. You can actually feel it clogging up your arteries, but it tastes soooo good! A culinary treat that shouldn't be missed!

Well we just got back from the long drive and not only am I still married but she want's to do it again....
The Highlights:
Excellent weather and other that the usual traffic in Virginia, smooth going. Running with a Valentine as well as the WAZE app on a IPhone we were able to do very decent times without haveing the pleasure of meeting any of the East Coast's Sheriffs and Troopers either down or back.
Had a real country breakfast in SC at a waffle house with the works and I do believe that cheese grits with sausage gravy is a truly amazing thing.
Sarasota and Siesta key was hot but very beautiful and after several days of celebrating,Grilling, drinking and napping it was time for our drive up to Savannah.
I love Savannah, the town, the humor, the food, the people and we had a ball and promised to come back. SC and NC was a blur but was able to hit a couple BBQ stands near Pee Dee and Fayetteville that made me want to just rub myself down with sauce and stay on.
Thank to you all for your fine recommendations and advice and Bless the South.

Smithfield has been taken over by China, hard telling what you will get. The rest of this post is right on though

Default I hope you have a smooth trip

But anticipate delays in GA and FL. If everything is clear it's a magic carpet ride but I'm always running into something. Wrecks, road construction, forest and orange grove fires. I haven't heard anything bad lately. My. M.I.L. drove down to the Orlando area just last week and didn't report any delays. Of course you already know to avoid JAX at rush hours.

Wow that is quite a haul. I haven't driven like than since we toured the west many many moons ago.

We do the 5 to 7 hour drive to Montreal several times a year so this one was not really much of a stretch and actually quite relaxing as I love to drive and the wife loves to nap...we don't even turn on the radio and the book on CD was never listened to.We also ate at a Cracker Barrel for the first time which was indeed a treat.

Waffle House has my favorite hash browns. They also make a wicked pecan waffle. Stop at one on I75 in Ohio on the way to Kentucky every trip. Friendly folks, too.

Watch out Dup, I came for 2 weeks in 1980 (from NJ) and I'm still here. You only need 3 things:
1) Sunscreen, go to Sams' or Costco, get a 5 gallon bucket and a 4" brush.
2) Money, a bag as heavy as you can safely carry in and out of the car (40-50lbs mixed $20's-$50's and $100's should be good for a few weeks as long as you stay away from the "House of the Mouse" and the strip clubs).
3) A bright disposition. We got more than our share of unhappy @#$%^&*.
Oh, and if #2 is sufficient you can get ammo. Only thing cheap in Florida is sunshine. Enjoy your stay. Joe

... not that there's anything wrong with that!

The coffee at Timmie's is terrible these days. It used to be really good. Maybe the MBA types have dictated chicory? Come to think of it, their donuts are not what they once were. What's the world coming to?

Just got back from the Florida panhandle yesterday. It's only a four hour drive from here usually but I 10 was backed up in several places and made the return trip home about an hour longer. The surf was rough and I'm not 20 anymore. I'm still sore. Don't let your wife drink a lot of water on the way down or it will take forever to get there. Don't wear black socks and sandals or we'll know where you came from. If it's cloudy you can still get sunburned. Stay away from KFC popcorn chicken. Don't pick up any hitchhikers. Fleeing felons seem to like Florida. Check your tire pressure and all your fluids. We checked eight or ten shops and there was no cheap ammo and most of the Smith's were double what they should have been. Do find a nice seafood restaurant that serves local fresh seafood. Watch out for old drivers like me. Enjoy your trip, it's a very fun place.

In Florida:
1. DO NOT SPEED (use your speed control)
2. CCW 24/7 (things are somewhat unsettled )
3. DO NOT allow your gas tank to go pass "one half full".
4. AVOID the Stanford / Miami area

When in or just passing through Jacksonville ya gotta go to Clark's Fish Camp!
This is THEEEE coolest restaurant that I've ever eaten at.

It's also home to America's largest taxidermy collection --- UNREAL
And, as an added bonus, the food is wonderful.

Where were you? I spent last week at Perdido about a half mile east from the Flora Bama. Made several trips to Joe Patti's in Pensacola-great lump crab Went to some place called Tacky Jacks. Save your money. Most of the time I stayed on the beach and drank.

On your way down I suggest hanging a right in Florence, and head to Llano, Texas for some real BBQ at Cooper's.

We did stop at Smithfield in SC and it was a bitter disappointment. I grill not BBQ or smoke but I swear I could produce a better "Q" in my crockpot than what I had in there. The fried chicken was decent but again nothing memorable, how ever the ribs and pulled pork we had at a tiny roadside shack in Bee Dee called Doug's was excellent and the mustard sauce was so tangy with an element I can only describe as faintly alcoholic that I swear there was some shine in it.
