Default Stupid things I've heard at gunshows!

I usually try to go to all the local and not too distant shows... you never know what you'll find or what you might hear from the sellers.

Here's a new one for me, I'll add it to my other top 2 favorites:

1. Yesterday while looking a very nice ($4800 !) walnut case made by Kidder for an antique Colt, the dealer told me I should get it so I could keep my lipstick in it!

2. While looking at a sword cane a year or so ago... I had broken my ankle and thought a cane might be a good choice. Dealer told me I couldn't look at it because I might hurt myself with it. I asked numerous times just to see it, but he wouldn't let me..! I said in a fairly loud voice, "Are you kidding me?!"... he wasn't and I never did get to look at it.

3. While looking at a few older Smith & Wessons, the dealer politely (and very seriously) informed me that he was sorry he didn't bring any jewelry for me to look at.

I could go on an on, but these are my top 3.

Linda, You just HAVE to have a basket ,or several full. I just don't believe some of the stuff I have overheard sellers telling women at gun shows. Best, or worse one, depending on how you consider it-- Little lady, that is just too much gun for you---

Going to a gun show (and talking with some of my old friends) can be like traveling back to the 50s.Maybe they all live in caves?

By the time you gave up, that dealer with the sword cane was probably afraid he'd get hurt if you go a hold of it.

I was a volunteer range safety officer at one of the ranges I belong to for guest day today. There were quite a few women shooting with all levels of expertise. One of the women who came works in a gun store and was giving expert instruction to one of the other women. One of the other RSO's told me he had seen her working in her store and was very impressed by how knowledgeable she was and how she was especially helpful to women customers.

We were so impressed with her that we spoke with our chief range officer about recruiting her for our team . Hope she joins us.

Vicki Farnam has written two great books on teaching women to shoot and she thinks that women are better at teaching women to shoot than men are. I agree with her.

I was really shaking my head after reading this opening. I finally realized what was going on a few posts down but only because they mentioned your name. We just make the mistake everyone in here is a guy. Sorry Linda. I promise I have no jewelry to sell you.

I love going to gun shows with my wife. She's tall, blonde and thin (I love going lots of places with her). She's also an NRA Lifer, a long time SASS shooter and has her CCW (carries a Colt; nobody's perfect). Some of the things dealers say to her are a hoot, but her responses are even better.

I've been told by a dealer that I could not look at a firearm because "teenagers" were not allowed in the gun show.

This is me.

Of course there is the other end of the spectrum. I walked into a rather new LGS shop a few months back. Fancy place, looked like a Macy's for firearms. Everything was new and well matched including the employees uniforms and holstered Sigs. As I walked by a display case, I overheard a 70's ish woman asking to see a S&W revolver tucked in the back of the LED lit case. This made me pause as it's not everyday you see a senior lady show interest in a full sized S&W revolver. ( I was impressed!) The saleslady retrieved the gun and read the tag in a confident voice: "This is a VERY nice S&W model one ninety five. It's a three five seven caliber. "
Of course, what she had was a mod 19-5 in 357mag. I was going to correct her but didn't even know where to start. I just shook my head and walked out. Not because she was a woman but because the shop had somebody behind the counter posing as a knowledgeable salesperson who should not have been there.
So at the risk of coming off as a sexist ( which I'm not), I'd argue that just because someone is a woman with interest in guns, no one should assume what she knows allot on the subject without it being demonstrated. Same would be true for men of course. It's just more common to run into men in gun shops who are spouting BS :-)

Well, I did atend the Churchill, Atkin, Grant, and Lang auction and have met reps from both Purdey and H&H. The H&H guy had a funny story about how he'd bummed his tie from an American friend.

Seems that Queen Mary, wife of King George V, had a habit of excessively admiring art items and such at hosts' homes, until they felt obligated to give the item to her. So, Mr. Lyell said that he'd "done a Queen Mary" on the man with the tie until he gave it to him to shut him up, I guess. He admired my own tie tac, a bas-relief of a Cape buffalo by Sid Bell, but not excessively so.

My teenage daughter was quite taken with a Maj. Ramsay, a Scot who came in a kilt. He hosts hunts in Scotland.

It was a fun event, made sad only because it marked the end of a famous gun maker. Some of you may have read my report of the event in, "Guns." Col. Askins attended, too. I think we were the only gun writers present. But there were many British accents.

A new trick I have for Gun shows or any body else selling guns, is ask do you have ammo for this gun when they say no. I say that's to much to pay for for a paper weight and walk away

You know, I probably could say a thing or two to some of these sellers, but sometimes its best to be quiet... (and play dumb )

Most of the sellers are usually very nice, plus after awhile you do get to know them, and vice versa.

Sword cane, huh? About 10 years ago I'd been walking the show. End to end, top to bottom. My show partner and I never saw each other. I'd return from a hike and he'd mumble "bout time" and leave. I didn't pay much attention to the guys in the same island we were in. Finally, late in the day I came back near exhaustion. So my partner asked me why I hadn't bought the cane the guy behind us had for sale. I was a sucker for them. Of course the answer was I hadn't seen it..yet.

So we started talking. It was the best cane and sword I'd ever seen. It had 20+ inches of Gil Hibben hand made steel. The cane was cherry wood, with brass and elephant ivory handle. Just beyond great. So of course I paid up and took it along. I haven't seen one as nice since, either.

His story was equally interesting. He grew up in the hills of Eastern Kentucky (That's a separate state I think). It seems that most of his neighbors had sold off the mineral rights to their farms. But this guys dad and a neighbor hadn't. And as luck would have it, the thick seam of low sulfur coal was under their farms. So the mining started and the first of many monthly royalty checks came in. His pappy loaded them all in the family truck and headed to town. All the kids (adults by then) got brand new Caddy's. Of course it had been a hard scrabble farm up until then. Barely room to park the family truck in the yard. First rain storm a couple of them were over the hill with one all the way to the creek.

His dad didn't mind, he told them he'd buy them another the next month. In the mean time, he got one of the miners to bulldoze a parking place for all of them! So his daddy needed a cane and they had one made up special. Money wasn't an object. The guy came to the gun show to sell the cane and some other outrageous stuff.

I am sure it is much worse for a woman but even as a middle-aged man with my share of gray hair to prove it I hear so much ridiculous gun-nonsense at local gunshows that I have developed the habit of acting like I cannot hear what anyone says - and usually I can't anyway. If they persist, I just nod and smile accordingly and begin looking around for a quick escape route.

Back some years ago I was at a gun show and I was looking at the table with dozens of Norinco SKSs in open boxes stacked up there. It was hard not to notice that they all were still coated with cosmoleen (SP) Just as this fact was dawning on me a guy dressed in military garb yelled at the vendor, "Hey mister, somebody poured coke or something all over all your guns. I ain't buyin' no sticky rifle". He said it very loudly and the poor vendor could only shake his head in disgust.

I appreciated the small ripple of laughter that followed from some of those close enough to hear. What a rube!

I can't believe the dealer suggested storing your lipstick in the case...how silly...clearly it would be much more suited to your jewelry!

The dealers do have a mentality right from the stoneage. They should be glad that there was a good woman who is serious intrested in their stuff. Do not get frustrated. Stupid people are anywhere.

LOL same.

My wife went and they were trying to sell her on a dinky little Taurus revolver and insisting that she needed cowboy loads for it.

Last time we were out to the range she took my 586, my box of .357 ammo (that she bought for my birthday, lol) and brought them both back empty.

Sorry about your experiences, there are some men at gun shows that drag their knuckles when they walk. My lady friend accompanies me to the gun shows and even shops there, but she doesn't presently shoot. Her knowledge level is rather low, but there are men that have holes in their knowledge. (I won't deny that myself). Recently I was talking with a worker in a gun store and he had a hard time believing that .38 special was really closer to 36 caliber. He said he'd measure one when he got home. I spoke to him later and he believed me.

There was an older gentleman looking at a Glock. He told the seller I dont think I can get to like plastic.

The seller said SIR, this isn't plastic, its polymer and its not even close to the same thing!! This is what they make airplanes and spaceships out of.

I think the seller really thought he was being honest to the man looking at it...

Seems many dealers are at gun shows to show guns. Not sell them.

Linda, you definitely deserved better. But Jaykellog mentioned a guy in an LGS who showed his ignorance; and though I don't go to gun shows anymore because I can't do the walking (or afford guns), the weird **** I heard at the shows was often far less than what I've heard in gun stores.

But that's a whole other thread.

We don't go to gun shows anymore-just a waste of time. But the wife usually gets ignored in LGS. One (i think is out of business now) stood around shooting the bull then came down to the other end of the store to help me. They had to walk right by her to get to me. I responded to the "clerk" that she was the one looking. Her response was: "I'm not interested anymore!". Later she told me she really liked a 16 ga model 97 for her cowboy shooting but not after being snubbed.

We were both on the Board of Directors for Quail Unlimited in SoCal. When we moved to NorCal, we contacted a VERY VERY famous gunshop in Oroville about starting a chapter (at the request of the QU Regional Director). The manager told us not to even approach the owner if we were going to have a woman on the Board.

Local LGS: My wife has done three escrows for the owner (1 business, 1 personal, and 1 business loan), one for the General Manager, bought several guns from, sold guns to, etc. They have two of my elk (1 6x6 and 1 8x7) on the wall. My wife suggested they bring in a line of concealed carry purses and has advised them on some product lines. This shop often has as many women shopping as men.

i think most men have a had time dealing with women on on any business level,my wife is retired from a worldwide computer company,(not going to say who), she was a sales rep and was fluent in several languages.went to japan in the mid 70's on first sales trip and was met by several rude Japanese men, they just could not believe a woman had been sent on such an important sales mission and basically just stood there and said a lot of rude sexist things to her in Japanese not knowing she understood exactly what they were saying, when she replied(in japanese) and repeated what they had said about her the whole office went quiet, she said after that all of them looked like little schoolboys and bent over backwards to make sure she had the time of her life while there

A few years back, my wife was at a car dealership looking at cars. After a while the salesman said to her "why don't you go home and bring your husband back and then we can make a deal". Demeaning and little did he know my wife is five times richer than I'll ever be.

In the case of the car dealership, what the woman shoulda done was go find the owner, explain that she "HAD been planning to buy that expensive (Mercedes/Cadillac/Lincoln/whatever) until THAT salesman (and point him out) said I should come back with my husband. Now I am going over to the (competition) and buy from them. I thought you should know that THAT MAN cost you a 60,000 dollar sale."

Hopefully the salesman would get fired.

Stupid should hurt.

On the flip side, while shopping for furniture to outfit a new condo I bought a few years back I discovered that salespeople will ignore a man by himself unaccompanied by a woman in a furniture store.
Why? They know that no man is going to make the final decision on furniture, and even if he does, he won't dare buy it unless his wife approves!
I literally had to beg to get some help and make an order.

While looking at a27-2, that the dealer was VERY proud of.. the dealer walked over to tell me that is was Smith .357 MAGNUM.. and was pretty powerful..then proceeded to describe the fact that

" See right there.. It has a pinned barrel. and that makes it more valuable... I played along and asked what does the
" Pin Do?"
And the answer was....

It made the barrel more stable so you can shoot targets up to TWO HUNDRED YARDS AWAY..

I left>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I thought most people around here valued those good old fashioned values.

I love guns, but there really are A LOT of things I can't stand about a lot of the people involved in "gun culture". I've heard more racist, sexist and generally backwards ignorant comments at gun shows than I can possibly remember.

Hopefully the younger generations will be more mature as they replace the older generations.

I wouldn't bet on them being more mature, but they'll likely have a different set of prejudices.

At a gun show once I was looking at 9mm pistols.

Proprietor promptly came over and said, "Little lady what you need is right over here" and indicated the area of pink .38's.

I said I don't think we can do business and left.

Don't feel bad. Happens to me too--just last week in the bonding with my daughter thread.

I am fully aware of entering of what has traditionally been a man's world and nobody is perfect and mistakes and assumptions are made, on everybody's part, from time to time. Forgiveness is easy for genuine mistakes. Jerks are a different story. I work in a male dominated field, and have in others in the past so it's nothing new. Most of the time things are fine, and I can tolerate much and let things slide. However, when it comes time to play, game on--and I play hardball. I never start the game, but I always finish.

Smithsrevenge:

When I was growing up, we were always warned to be extra polite when dealing with small statured and/or youthful looking Texas DPS Troopers. Such Troopers were reported to be trained to be extra tough and looking for an excuse to "tune you up". I always wondered about that until I began working with some retired DPS Troopers when I was employed with the DOT (Department of Transportation). These troopers confirmed that certain troopers (always small statured, or "not very aggresive" ones) in the academy were issued a pair of boxing gloves, and while the other troopers were enjoying a cigarette break, they had to seek out an opponent and spar with them in an effort to "toughen them up". The troopers I spoke with felt that this was an effective technique, and they said that those troopers either became very good at hand-to-hand fighting, or they quit the academy.

Also, thank you for your service - I really appreciate what you peace officers do to keep all of us safe.

Regards,

Dave

Unfortunately, I'm afraid we're going to have guys like this with us no matter where we go.

My sweet little petite daughter-in-law, who happens to be exceptionally athletic, shoots a 7˝-inch barrel Ruger Redhawk in .44 magnum. She doesn't think twice about it. That's just the way it is.

Of course, there are many "good ol' boys" who would point her towards a little pink .22 Taurus. Fortunately, she's got an attitude where she doesn't take much guff from those guys.
