Crusin' da hood AZ style...
Or, how I spent a few hours out.
Been a while since I took out the old quad, always been a good one, never left me stranded, and I think I've rebuilt everything there is to rebuild on this old thing.
Yeah, I've got a couple new ones and a Ranger, but this monster is fast, 4X4, and never gives up.
So we crused the suburban hood for a few.
The old work beast, 10 years old and still a winner:
The neighbors ranch, recently he's gotten into raising mini animals like horses (no it's not a Shetland):
Mini Brahma bulls, this guy was cool, sorta like a big dumb dog (and yes, it's full grown):
The ride over meant I needed to cross what we euphemistically call a river, it's about 2-3 foot deep, but I know the area very well and know the bottom composition is rock:
Stopped in the middle of the mighty Gila (pronounced Hela long E) river, you really do have to be carefull, a flash flood from the mountains will turn it into a killer if you miss the signs:
One last pic of the old beast under the bridge on the way home:
Could have stopped at the bar on the way home (right at the bridge end on the Highway), but the wife had ribs she'd BBQd, and I sure wasn't going to let them get cold!

Naw, making the most of it usually involves more beer and explosives!

What is the make/model of the quad? I have a Yamaha Wolverine and the front looks like a Yamaha. Also the monoshock in the back makes me think it might be a Yamaha. It has a lift kit on it too right?

You talk like 10 years is old! Heck my car is 14 years old and I still think of it as new. My chain saw is 30 + and while I do agree it is a might aged it aint exactly OLD!

About 4 years ago I was on a ride with some others. It was in sandy country near st. george. We came to a narrow rock walled slot in the trail where it had a lot of sand. A super fancy exspendsive custom made sandrail was stuck in the sand blocking the trail. A tricked out AR with a lot of ammo etc was on it. No one around it! One of our guys said he cant be far and rode ahead on the trail while the rest of us lifted and pulled the rail out of the way. Presently our guy came back with the dude rideing behind him. The dude was wearing a exspendsive tricked out auto I was told but I didnt find out what brand. When our guy found him he made him give him the gun as he didnt feel comfortable haveing a armed stranger rideing behind him. Somehow the gun then dropped off the quad as he was bringing him back! He had found the guy about two or three miles away. We drove the sandy trail looking for the gun but never found it!
Here is the commander that I want.
Can-Am UTVs & Side by Side ATVs | Can-Am USA
The original polaris RZR is probley a better sport side by side as from everything I have read they are the best handeling and are made in 50"s wide and many trails have gates exactly 50"s wide to keep out the bigger machines. However the cam am is probley more comfortabel as both the wife and me are large. I still havent seen a 4x4 quad ever get stuck like that sandrail did. However anything can break down. About 5 years ago I and a couple friends were out far in the boonies in SW utah near nevada about 70 miles from home. My friend hit a rock just wrong and it knocked out his oil drain plug. He was rideing two up with his wife. Fortunately one of us had a tow strap and I towed them with my quad about a dozzen miles back to our trucks. Had that happened when you are out by yourself you would be in deep bandini!
Cell phones DONT work 95% of the time in these wilderness areas. There is a gizmo called a SPOT that will transmit a beacon with a recorded message on it that you can select that if you have a wife or friend at home can be cordnated to see whats happened to you. I dont have one yet.
What I do use is a GPS but lately what I have that I like better and have been still learning to use is a samsong tab 2.7. They cost about $200s now. There is a free apt called "My tracks"
https://support.google.com/gmm/answe...1064&ctx=topic
The samsong has a GPS built in it. It is super accurate and when turned on somehow can even track when you even have it covered up in a carry bag! It will record your exact trip and you can save it and look and see your exact tracks where you have been on google earth!! Its the cats butt and costs nothing once you own the tablet!
Hint: Dont be a butt head and put one in the trunk of your sons car and dont use it in your unfaithful wifes car trunk! I found this thing worked in my plastic trunk on my quad! I dont think my GPS will even do that!

It's a 03 Polaris 500 Scrambler, it was sort of a combo utility/sport quad that had auto shift, push button 4X4, but came mono shocked for that wonderfull beat you to death ride the younger kids seem to love.
This one started out Blue, but once it faded and the decals came off I Rino lined it.

I really want a can am 1000 commander but they cost roughly $17,000 decked out like I would plus I would probley have to pull out $24,000 out of the IRA to get the 17K after the tax factor!
|
feralmerril, I went with the Polaris Ranger and never looked back, I have a friend with a Commander and quite honestly it is not near as capable as the Ranger.
It's a cool toy, but the ride is stiffer and less payload capacity.
Plus the Ranger cost a darn sight less than the Can Am.

I really miss Arizona. I lived in Cave Creek. Kind of a retro cowboy town. I miss the sunsets there, the best in the country. I could not believe the diversity in terrain there. You could go from mountains with snow and skiing to desert. I don't miss the 110 degree heat in the summer though!

Thanks. Last saturday I rode with a couple that had one. I was surprised! The woman was driveing and her husband looked as old as me and even about a 100 pounds bigger! I figure he was over for spins on the scale! As said, the trail was super steep and rocky. It hurt the guy and we got to a road house. I offered his wife that I would take the same trail back and get my truck and come around and get him. She would have none of it. We had rode over about 15 or 20 miles of some of the worst I have been on. It was a 55 mile trip but longer and easier going back. I had rode sweep and was amazed as to how well the 9 atvs ahead of me did! I belive we had about three old women that drove their atv`s out of 10. They made it! Personaly I would never had led that group on that rough ride but my club leader had laid it out for the club out of beaver. I hope they want to ride with us again but I bet some are discouraged. One old lady made some coment to me about me packing a revolver when I took my shirt off when I got hot. I just said I hate rattlers. Tomorrow they have a ride planned a 100 mile drive north of us and they say it will be a 60 mile trail drive. On one hand I would like to go but theresa is laid up. On top of that the weather forecast is 50% chance of rain and they said they are going over 10,000 feet! I will pass on this one.
I went to st george yesterday to look at can am`s. He also had a used ranger like yours there. Maybe I might go back and check it out. I sure was surprised how well that one did last week. I have rode with some before I am sure, but never considered them before. My wife theresa says the seat looks too straight up and high to her, but I admit that seat looks the biggest and widest I have seen. Tempting!
EDIT: Hey! Cave creek? I belive thats the area (but aint sure) that a friend moved to last year. He`s the guy I wrote about towing 12 miles when he lost his oil plug!
