Default Smith in bed with walther :-D

So my partner at work needed some extra cash this week.

He made this $100 by selling me his Walther P22 .22cal pistol with 2 mags.

Upon field stripping it and cleaning it I noticed an oddity.

Frame says "Walther Germany".

Slide says "Carl Walther made in Germany"

But right next to it it clearly says

"SMITH AND WESSON, SPRINGFIELD MASS"!?!?!?!

walther and smith? really? haha :-D I like my new german pistol even more now! :-D

I believe S&W handles distribution of Walther in the US. That's why they're stamped on the Walther pistols.

Come and gone. Smith and Walther partnered for a number of years, but about a year or so ago, Walther ended the relationship.

IIRC, Smith was the US distributor and repair agent for Walther. Walther designed hand guns were made under the S&W name. I think that was in Houlton, ME.

The P22 isn't well regarded by many shooters, but I like mine. Most complaints are about durability, all things considered, I don't think that's a problem.

Thompson Center is a wholly owned subsidiary of S&W.

model 99 plastic semi-auto was a Smith/Walther co-op. Pretty good pistol but I doubt they bring much over $300 even in the frenzy.

I have had a P22 for several years and I have never had a problem with it. I can hit spinning targets at 25 yds with it from a rest and I put the threaded barrel nut on it and I have borrowed my brothers suppressor and I may have to get my own to put on the P22. I have read that the M&P 22 has some of its internals from the P22.

I believe S&W and Walther had a divorce. Walther is importing their own guns now. Ed

I'm not complaining, I agree with you. It's good for what it is, plinking and getting used to firearm handling.

Exactly. I'm thinking of giving it to my mother as her first gun at 67 years old. I lived with her to give her care while she was going through chemo, so she felt very safe knowing if anything came through the door, it would stop about 1 inch in and hit the floor.

However I do not now and there's been a few home burglaries lately. So I figure a gun that you can put 10 rounds into a 2 inch square in under 5 seconds........may be a good defense pistol for in her home. Her rocking chair is directly opposite the door.......only door and most windows wouldst fit a person so haha

Yea just check out the S&W website, there is a link to walther. Now they wouldn't do that unless they were together.

Surprised somebody else hasn't spoken up about this. I have two Hi Standards that were made 1954-56. They were $75 back then. Don't know how many rounds they've had through them, but must have been quite a few. I bought a S&W 41 in 1957 for $110; it must have fired only about 10K rounds so far; I changed the springs a few years ago but it's still going strong.

The P22 problems arose when Walther became the property of a toy gun maker. They decided to make the slide of the P22 out of pot metal. They work fine, but are prone to cracking into pieces. Owned one, did the research and this is true. They claim its very high quality pot metal. The company name escaped me so I looked it up, its Umarex.

Yeah I noticed its the same exact metal that my Walter PPKS pellet gun is made of. That was slightly unimpressive.

On a second note. Anyone know where to get parts for the P22. I had it at the range today and had 5 weak strikes where it failed to fire. Second squeeze of the trigger always popped it off but i believe something is not right.

I need a new hammer spring to beef up the striking power. Anyone know where to get one?

I had a Ruger RST 6 that I put 50K rds through over a 20 yr period. I paid $125 for it in 1981, sold it to my doc friend 20 years later for the same $125. He still puts thousands of rounds through it every year. I'm trying to buy it back but he ain't even hearing $125. I figure that pistol will outlive both of us. I thought the recoil spring assembly needed replacement when I sold it but I must be wrong. A good .22 should last several lifetimes. But I'm an old fart and I remember things that last. Joe

I have an early P22, they had defective magazines, that wouldn't feed.

This year, when I finally talked Smith into replacing the mags, I found out that the extractor was faulty

I already knew that, and replaced the old one with an Exact Edge extractor. Hadn't had the new one a month, when I found out Smith recognized the fact, and offered a replacement.

The original extractor, wouldn't come close to a rimfire rim, and would not extract an unfired round.

I like the thing, kinda racy looking, good sights, and at least now, functions well.
