Cherry Phosphate????
Was readin Sips thread this morning about Woolworths in Ca.! Some of the replys got me to pondering about my youth. About 60 plus years ago, in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the Broadmoor Drugstore soda fountain we younguns would enjoy a cherry phosphate. Milk, cherry flavoring and soda water I think it was, Anyone know ingredients?
Additionally, on the few occasions I had enough $ to get a hot fudge sunday some of the other guys (this writer exempt) would twist paper wrapper on end of straw, stick it into the hot fudge, and then blow hard enough to stick it to the ceiling. When the "refigerated air" would kick on, the straw wrappers would wave, not unlike tenacles on coral or such. I stress, this writer was appaled at the antics of others. They had those old tin ceiling tiles that almost echoed.
What was the makeup of a cherry phosphate?

I never knew what a cherry phosphate was when I was a kid, but I always imagined it as containing toxic waste. Just sounded nasty!

Google is your friend. No milk.
- 12 oz club soda
- 2 teaspoons cherry flavored syrup, such as Torani
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice, fresh or reconstituted
Original was make with acid phosphate instead of lemon juice. They don't make acid phosphate anymore.

???? There was either a 3 or 4 drawl, One had the seltzer water...to give it the fizz One was plain water....the other I can't remember....off to the side was those pump things that held either the Coke Cola syrup. The Cherry flavored syrup..Root Beer...Lemon/Lime??? Orange...I don't ever remember getting grape from the fountain.... I can't remember now.
The phospahate was kept over by the syrups........
(I think) First would be a squirt of the Cherry syrup into the glass, Then the Phosphate from the container, then pull down on the seltzer water, add ice....?????
Oh man does that bring back memories....And the comic books were across from the soda fountain...We kids could look at comics back then.....Ten Cents...Trade them with your buddies...
That was just last week...right?

There was a mom and pops store downtown in the small town
i grew up in Indiana. Pop. about 2500 people. They we're a soda
fountain/grill/drugstore etc.. called Rody's. Had a jukebox and 8-10
small tables. Sold candy, comic books, a few sundries along with the
sodas and grill. We used to go in after school and put a quarter in the jukebox,
order a Marshmallow Coke and read comics. Those we're the
days. They had the best darn coney dogs i have ever ate to this day.

As a kid I used to get a cherry phosphate occasionally at the soda counter of a local drugstore. Mostly got a cherry coke though. That and a comic book made for good times.

I worked here in the 50's and cherry phosphates were the most popular; it was a complete soda fountain with malts, sundaes, floats etc.
Also served hamburgers, grilled cheese etc.
Do you remember dumping a bag of salted peanuts in a coke bottle?

I remember them, but haven't had one in decades and decades. Like maybe the 1950s. If you read the ingredients on coke and pepsi, you'll see one ingredient is phosphoric acid. Makes me wonder if its not just a cherry soft drink, made just before serving. I sure do remember the "soda jerks" making them.

Perusing Google, I found several vendors of acid phosphate, it seems to be making a comeback. From my Vermont days (1956-1959, 2nd to 4th Grades) I recall the local emporium offered a "Cemetery Coke"-a little bit of every fountain flavor. At a local pizzeria it's self service on the beverages, I make a "Half and Half"-half Diet Coke, half Classic. Combines the best of both worlds IMHO.

A famous brand of soda had phosphoric acid as one of the ingredients. I always thought that was what gave it the 'bite' that burned the back of your throat. I wonder if acid phosphate is the same idea??
UPDATE:
I just looked it up and yes, they are the same thing. And Coca Cola apparently still has it.

I always preferred the Lemon-Lime ones myself.
Graeter's in Columbus & Cincinnati had good ones.
My Aunt worked the Soda fountain at the deugstore in her tee years and used to make me great on's when I wore a younger man's clothes. I can remember going to a Drive-in burger joint with her and being told they didn't have Phosphates when I asked. She asked if they made Ice-cream soda's and when they said yes she told them to make one and leave out the ice cream.
