Default Anybody shoot a .204 ?

Picked up a Remington 700 in 204 Ruger and was a little disappointed in the accuracy of 40 gr bullets. Shooting 35 gr Bergers and get fantastic accuracy. I have read the 1-12 twist is a bit slow for 40's. Any thoughts?

I shoot a 204 Ruger NO1. Also have shot my sons HRhandi in 204. Have found both of them like the 32 gr. Hornadys better than the heavier 40gr.
Have found with the NO1 that a small change in powder weight can affect accuracy considerably.
But it is one fine gun for praire poodles and other small varmits.

I shoot an Encore in 204. I never got a 40 grain bullet to shoot well but man alive would those 35 Bergers. I have never had a rifle shoot as well as this one with the Bergers. The 39 Sierras did pretty good also.

This reminds me I need to get to the range soon.

I get pretty good accuracy with the Sierras too, but not like the Berger 35 gr, Berger 40 gr not so good.
Thanks guys for the input.

I also agree on the 32 grn Hornady. My Ruger #1 loves them. They turn a coyotes insides to jelly. Flat shooting.

Don't see a need for heavier bullets.

I've been waiting to hear somebody say that. Most claims are the 32 gr bullet is for small varmints, too light for coyotes especially in the notheast where they get big.

I have a savage and it shoots both the 32 and 40 pretty well. The 32 may shoot a little tighter but not by much. I've just bought some Hornady 45 gr. spitzers but haven't had a chance to load any yet.

Mine is a 1 in 13 twist Pac-Nor barrel and all I have ever shot is the 32 grn Hornady bullets. They are almost too much for fox and coyotes. I couldn't make the animal look like that if I shot it with a 12 gauge slug. Be careful with the 204...it is definately a barrel burner. I used to take my 223 to the gravel pit and set up skeet targets 200, 300 and 400 yards out and then lay down and shoot till even the bigger pieces were gone. One good 2 or 3 hundred round sessions in the summer time like that with a 204 and you will be doing a rechamber to get past the burned up throat.

Im shooting a Tikka in .204 Ruger and it seems to shoot everything very accurately. Just a bit tighter in the 32-34 grain hand loads than the 40 grain. I think it is because of the powder I use on the 40 grain loads. You will have to experiment for your rifle.

have had a Remington xr-100 for a while now. it shoots the any of the 32gr. bullets well and the 26 barnes quite well. after all, a 204 is about velocity.

I've helped a couple friends work up loads for the 204, and you need a 1-9 twist to stabilize the 40 gr. If you want a better round, get the 22-250 with a 1-9 twist and you can shoot anything from 40 gr. to 69 gr. and very accurately.

I have an AR-15 with a Pac-Nor barrel and it is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. It loves 39 gr Sierra bullets and will consistently shoot 3/8" groups (or smaller) at 100 yds.

I have a 22-250 in a Rem 700. I thought that there would never be a better coyote gun on the earth. Then I shot my friends Tikka lite stainless in Ruger 204 and had to have one. Now the 22-250 lives in the safe. The 204 is awesome. It shoots 1/2-3/4 inchg at 100 yds when I am up to it. I have had one shot of over 250 yards, and the coyote fell like he was hit by a power wagon. What an impact it has.
