Default Spending a week in a gun-free zone

With a commitment to attend a family wedding and to visit relatives rarely visited, I will be spending almost a week in the gun-free zone of NJ. Normally I take a handgun with me for long road trips, but with the bulk of my time on this trip being in the totally non-gun friendly state of NJ I am going unarmed. My car will by necessity be parked outdoors in an urban environment every night, and with out-of-state license plates I feel it is too risky to leave a gun in the car, even in a locked and secured case. This all makes me feel like I am traveling to another country where their strange laws put me at additional vulnerability. Hopefully all will go well and I will not become one of those "I wish I had ignored the law" stories.

I feel your pain. Relatives live in Rockville, MD. an area with a security camera on every pole and serious anti-gun sentiment/ draconian laws. I feel naked every time I visit.

What also amazes me is that my relatives, in both NJ and NY, all seem relatively OK without having any tangible 2nd Amendment rights. I feel lucky to have been forced out of the liberal Northeast in my younger days when I entered active military service, and realized that there certainly is more freedom in some places than others. I'm glad my visit is only for 1 week.

Where in Joize? Like everything else...location location location. If youre going to Trenton, Newark, Jersey City, Camden....etc...etc...than yea bad areas. However, if youre in Lambertville - rural small town America or Cherry Hill- rich or Alpine NJ- 2nd richest zip code in America ....its a different world.

I go to Jersey all the time. While it is a gun free state there arnt exactly bad guys and gangs on every corner.

I just got back from about a week in Illinois, and Wisconsin. Yea, I kept having a moment of panic when my arm brushed across where my gun was supposed to be, but otherwise, it was no really big deal.

Would I rather have carried? Yes. Was I going to tell my wife we couldn't visit her family? No.

Worst thing about Joisy is that they won't let you pump your own gas. Try and some guy in a turban tuns out and yells at you.

A fellow I know well was running late for a afternoon departure on a family road trip to Washington DC. Tossed his briefcase in the family car to finish his project on the road, and several hundred miles in came across his carry gun in the briefcase. Now what to do? he's going to one of the most anti-gun cities in the country, and really does not like his options...

He call's me and another buddy from the road and we go over some options (bad to worse)

1. Carry the darn thing unloaded, at lest he knows it's safe (Yeah Right, walking in and out of Federal buildings, etc...)

2. Lock it unloaded in the car and hope it stays in place (getting better, but Valet parking at his hotel makes this a worry)

3. Same as above but pay to park at a lot where he keeps the keys (even better, but $50 a day and still not really secure)

4. Take the darn thing (ammo and all) to his room and hope to God the staff at the hotel does not come across it.

5. Dis-assemble it, leave part take part with (we debated what to keep and leave a good deal)

He goes with option #4 and as luck would have it the hotel has a safe (not a good one but they lock) in each room, so he locks the thing up. Again hoping this is not a ploy to make it easer for some employee to find items of value.

Just to make things more interesting the guy who was to park his car, puts the thing on the street in front of the hotel, and forgets to move it into the garage. As you would expect someone knocks out the window and cleans out what little of value was in the car.

Simple point to perhaps too long a story, if you know you are going to a gun free zone, don't risk it. If he had left any or all of the darn thing in the car this story could have a very unhappy ending.

And its still $.25 - $.35 cents cheaper than pump your own Pa!

Ill dont mind someone pumping my gas while saving money. ...and no tip is involved. That's factored into their pay

That and their liquor stores are the only things I like about Jersey

When you return, please give us a report on what it is like spending a week in a GFZ. How things turned out, did you feel safer, did you lose any property etc? What were the natives of this place like?

Wasn't Illinois the only state without a carry option until just recently? So you were happy with Ill until recently? I live in NY and have had a CC permit/license for over 30 years. Can people from the other 49 carry in Illinois?
I travel a lot too, and don't take my guns in any state where I'm not legal to do so. There's many more besides NY and NJ.
BTW, does the "liberal northeast" include Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire? VT has Constitutional carry, and Me-NH have very good to exc gun laws including Class 3 weapons. Isn't Illinois a liberal GFZ?

To carry in Illinois, you need to pass their concealed carry course. They are just now starting to teach the teachers how to teach concealed carry. I understand out-of-staters have to pay twice as much to get the license as in-state people.

I can understand how you feel.
I had a doctor's appointment in Frederick Maryland yesterday. My wife and I live in West Virginia and Maryland doesn't reciprocate with WV.
It was a 2 hour road trip one way and while we were there we did the grocery shopping and stopped for dinner. Spent the whole day feeling like I forgot something and had to keep reminding myself that I left my snubby home on purpose.

I just noticed. You live in Illinois but think Jersey is bad? Im in Pa and you guys are as bad, if not worse than Jersey in some respects.

Going to Jersey is like going anywhere else. You got good places and bad places. While Pa is a shall issue state there are parts of Philadelphia I wouldnt go even with 2 guns. Maybe with a platoon
