Will Social Security checks be mailed if the Govt. shuts down?
This is not to invite political comments.
But if the threatened Govt. shutdown happens on Oct. 1, will Social Security checks be deposited or mailed as usual?
I tried to Search and THINK I found a source that says they will, but want to know if anyone here is certain.
This will affect a lot of members.

I'm sure they will. Social Security is a separate entity not funded by the government. It was funded by yours and your employers contributions.

Actually the government spent all those social security funds long ago on welfare programs. The payments made today are paid out of the general tax funds. Any private company functioning like this would have been charged with criminal embezzlement and misuse of funds, not to mention the ever ready conspiracy to defraud the public.

Whoever is on the currently-losing end of the "shutdown" fight always makes that threat to try to pressure the other side by scaring voters, but it's essentially an empty threat:
Shutdowns Have Not Stopped Social Security Checks
Quote:
For example, Social Security's official history website shows that during the four-day government shutdown in 1995, the agency initially furloughed 61,415 employees on the first day, leaving only 4,780 employees at work. But on the second day of the shutdown, after stating that the furloughs had "significantly impacted the Agency's service to the public," Social Security was allows to recall additional employees to work.
During the second 1995 shutdown, which lasted three weeks, 55,000 Social Security employees remained at work and checks went out as usual.
Also keep in mind that in 1995, most Social Security benefit checks were still mailed to recipients. Today, most benefits are processed electronically through direct deposit, thus requiring fewer employees.

Pols (regardless of party) have been known to tempt fate sometimes, but I've never seen one from either party actually shove their head into a lion's mouth.

I worked for the Fed's and don't remember being out of work, was threatened ever year around October. Though they can tell non essential to not report to work it hasn't happened in quite awhile since Clinton in 95-96. And I don't remember being out of work then. It is usually a scare tactic and I'm sure congress and senate will get their money as they always do, and they always pass something in the last hours for the peons. If they don't then economic collapse could happen. No money for anyone to spend, pay bills, etc. I guess the preppers would be happy.

A shutdown does not stop the spending. I just delays it for a few days.

The latest info we have got is that we are good until the 15th of October. After that, there may be furloughs. Who gets furloughed depends on your job and how well your agency is managed.
If employees are furloughed or laid off, there would be a delay in sending out checks. So far, we have not had to take furloughs or lay anyone off in my agency. BUT, we are now at 10 staff members when we used to have about 20. We have NO overtime (not that I get any at my pay grade, anyways), even "comp" time. Travel budget is non-existent as is most of our training budget. I already have resigned as a Supervisor due to workload issues in our office, so I could do more biology. We just transferred a student worker who was transitioning to full time under a special program from 200 miles away because we couldn't hire an admin person. The biologists are doing more and more admin stuff and this delays project approvals, such as reviews of major water projects, timber sales, etc.
One impact that could be felt is no waterfowl season on the refuges or hunting in national forests due to layoffs and furloughs. National parks would be closed, no timber sales, renewing grazing leases, no cutting Christmas trees, etc.

People seem to forget that taxes still flow into the government. They get enough tax dollars to pay for all the major liabilities including SS. You will get your check.
