I need some help on this Mosin
I don't know much, but I just saw somebody list this locally and the price seems pretty good at $120, even stating obo. I've seen some carbines but this looks a little different. What can you guys tell me about it? I just touched base with the guy and asked if he still has it and he does.
Edit: I just got word from the guy that the serial #s match, and I did not notice but the magazine and butt plate are gold plated.

It appears that someone "sporterized" the stock. The best source of info that I have found on these rifles is 7.62x54r.net

I was thinking something was either done with the stock or barrel. Thanks.

It has been butchered. It was once a 91/30 from the stock. If it was a M38 with a stock old enough to use screw in escutcheons then somebody needs a good spanking for wrecking it.

It's been Bubbaized.
Along with some Izvesk and Tula 91/30s, I do have one that Bubba got a hold of. I've got to say though he did a fair job of working on it. Barrel shortened and everything was nicely blued. Looks like someone was trying to make a deer rifle out of it. Bubba could have done a better job refinishing the stock on mine but it's still not bad.

So all in all is it still worth purchasing guys? I probably have a little room in negotiation of price.

Well you could get an un altered one for around the same price unless there is something you like about that one??

ok. I thought it was a good deal because I don't see any posted this price around here, but I am sure if I am patient I can find something better.

It just depends on what you want to do with it. The gold
plating is bubba's idea of making it pretty, ugh! But if you're
just looking for a cheap shooter or deer rifle it could be a
bargain with matching numbers and an excellent bore. All
too often buyers of milsurps judge a rifle by it's exterior and
discover a rusty bore after they get the gun home. Clean it
if you need to but take a good look at the bore and if it's
bright and sharp the gun would be a bargain for $100.00 or
so as a shooter.

I think matching S/N aren't much of an issue with that rifle anymore.
If you're looking for a bolt gun in 30/06 equivalent & don't already own one, why not? Never know. It might have a slick action & be a great shooter. Ammo is certainly cheap enough. Might be just the thing to stick in a PVC pipe & bury in the back 40.
$120 OTD cash & carry would be a good deal in my area for an unmolested Mosin although that particular rifle wouldn't interest me at all. I believe the days of the $99 Mosins may be over.
Posting pics of that rifle on 7.62x54R.net would certainly be interesting. Might get ya banned, tho.

I'd try and get it for $100.00. Looks like a bubba'd original stock and barrel.

Aaaaarrggg....what the heck!!!
Someone needs to be water boarded for that abortion!
Better picks would help along with date of mfg. But its not worth $120. Stock has been butchered and so has the barrel. Most likely you have a 30s-40s date, round reciecer 91/30. Nothing fancy or unusual. The rear tang will tell you the date of receiver but usually round receivers are matching to the barrel. They went through ww2 and then refurbished and stored. Some minor parts might not match....no biggy.
If it has a good barrel I'd offer $90. If its dark and rusty $50.
If its just a dark bore it can still be a good shooter. Ifvyou do get it dont bother trying to make the barrel shiny....will never happen. Just shoot and enjoy. Surplus ammo is about $90 per 440 rounds of Russian or Bulgarian.
Unless you can get it dirt cheap just buy a unBubba'd one.
One more thing. Originally 91/30s were sighted in with the bayonet fixed so if Bubba doesn't have one or you can no longer put one on thanks to Bubba's evil evil ways you might be all over the place with your shots. Sometimes thats not the case. Its on an individual rifle bases. I was shooting my 1925 91/30 in June and I had a shotgun like pattern at a 100 yards with Bulgarian surplus. After attaching the bayonet I had a solid 4moa group. The guy next to me had a 1941 91/30 and shooting Hornady ammo without the bayonet he was getting about 2moa

There are millions of Mosins out there, true, but there are some that are worth a lot more than others. I sure hope that Bubba didn't mess up one of those.
I saw a New England Westinghouse Mosin in a gunshop awhile back. The stock had been shortened and the receiver had been drilled and tapped for a scope mount. A collector would have cried to have seen that.
