I have been thinking on how to make a 12g tracer round using lee slugs, my only problem are the wads would be in the way of igniting the tracer compound. Any suggestions?

With all the stuff on the market that can be fed a 12 ga, I would just look online, rather than go experimenting on my own.

I haven't seen any in about 40 years. The commercial ones had a little aluminum sphere that sat in an over the powder wad. The bottom had an aluminum extension or "neck" that contacted the powder charge itself. When you fired it, you saw a spark go out toward the target. Usually a clay pigeon. It was supposed to allow you to see where you were shooting and to teach you to lead the target. I was a little amazed you were allowed to buy and shoot them because of the fire danger.

I might even have one in my cartridge collection. Of course I have no idea where that would be after all this time.

Not cheap about $3.00 each to buy but Google 12ga tracer ammo, or 12ga specialty ammo will give different types.

I would be hesitant to fire any sort of tracer round through a shotgun I cared anything about. Just saying....

If the weather had been dry for an extended period, I'd hesitate to fire it on a piece of property I didn't want to burn down. Also just saying...

Fiocci makes shotgun shells with shot plus a "glowstick" capsule. Fire the gun, the pressure breaks the inner capsule and launches the glowing blob. No fire hazard. You have to shoot at dusk/dawn/night but it's legal and safe.

Fiochhi tracers aren't worth the money in my honest opinion. I dont think it would be too difficult, it just seems like something worth trying out. My only concern is lighting the tracer compound.

Right, the Fiocchi are trash. That said, the new Winchester Tracker shells do work fairly well. Special wad that traps some shot for weight and wad petals that open wide for stability. They come in two colors, black for shooting against a clear sky and orange for dark backgrounds. Shot some just yesterday.

Well you see, my problem was spending $1 or 2 on a single shell while i can cast slugs very cheap. I am just looking for a way to load the slug with tracer compound. Due to the wads i won't be able to ignite the tracer compound.

drill a small hole in the wad column. Its what the factory tracers did, and what the companies that sell "pest" loads do. Some fire seems to contact the fuse on the exploding loads.

So go to a gun show and visit with the guys who sell oddball ammo. The stuff that explodes, fizzles and does all sorts of funny things. Buy a few and see how they do it.

Not sure it still works, but you used to be able to fire the 12 gauge marine distress flares out of a shotgun. Never got a chance to try it because none of my buddies would loan me their shotguns, and I sure wasn't going to send all that phosphorus down any of my gun barrels!

That's why God made 870's :D
