This is great! Gunsmiths who can work on all these classics are getting hard to find. So with CMP doing the work there should be no problem with quality or price.

Yeah , I got that email from CMP today. Pretty cool. There's not a lot of gunsmiths still around that know the fine points of US military rifles. I've seen more than a few Garands and carbines screwed up by hacks that thought they knew how to rebarrel them.

And ya can't get anymore USGI-spec Parkerizing than that!

My grandson helped work his way through college working at CMP. I forwarded this info on to him.

Sure, now they do this after I got all the tools to rebarrel M1s and figgered it out. (Go slow and take it easy with that reamer!) Which reminds me I've got one more to do, probably this winter.

I still fondly remember getting a "minus wood" M1 about 12 years ago for $265. It built up into a nice shooting rifle with the original barrel. When that one went south I put in a Criterion barrel and did the NM mods; then it shot even better. Always wanted to build up an M1 in 7.62 but never got to it. If I could still shoot iron sights I'd be building one up now.

GREAT rifles; everybody should have one!
