Looking for ideas for a DIY inconspicuous, inexpensive range bag set up that will accommodate my LC9, M&P Shield, 4 mags, 2 boxes of 50 round ammo, muffs, eyes, uplula. Pistols must be protected.
I'm anxious to hear your ideas.

Check out the various tool bags out there. Many are perfect pistol range bags and cost about 20-30 bucks.
It may say Craftsman on it, but tool bags are awesome for pistol range bags....and no one will grab yours by mistake.

A friend of mine gave me his uncle's old "Grip". For the younger crowd here a "Grip" is what people used to put their important things when they were traveling. It is all leather has 2 inside pouches and is large enough to carry all the things I need at the range. I am proud to carry ol' Lee's grip, and I would bet he would be proud also.

So, now that I've had dinner, a shower and an adult beverage, I can give a real answer.
I picked up a cheapy range bag at Dick's Sporting Goods. It isn't the best, but it came with 2 pistol rugs - again, nothing high-end. If I recall correctly, I think I got it on sale for like $25-30 this past spring. No shoulder strap, and I will eventually upgrade, but it makes a nice starter bag.

I have access to CPAP bags and they work great and don't look like you're carrying a gun.

I use an ordinary backpack that the kids use for school. Picked it up at Target for about $40. Tough and when slung over the shoulder looks like normal.

I really like everything from Mountainsmith, they make great bags! They're cheap, re-used materials (not important to some folks, but makes me happy), and they're very versatile. I have used for for school for years, and as a range bag myself (the biggest in the lumbar series, tour I think?). Though I recommend picking up the "strapettes" if you go with any of the lumbar series bags. You can get a lot of add ons and they'll replace any part of the bag for life.

If you're not already a member, join the NRA and they'll give you a real nice one for free. It does have the gold NRA logo on it but if you want it to be inconspicuous, black it out with a magic marker.

I took an old Dell laptop bag and tore some of the insides out and it's pretty good, nobody would ever guess it's not a laptop in there.

Neat idea
Howdy,
There is a fellow at the range who took a large plastic tool box with a suitcase like handle (It's more of a large camera case) He put a layer of soft foam on the bottom and put foam side by side leaving slots to slip pistols in for the whole width. He has a flat board insert that fits over the top of the foam with dividers and a handle to lift it out.
It was inexpensive, offers great protection for his guns, holds lots of stuff and is not something you see every day.
I kinda liked it but it is not a "bag" so to speak.
Thanks
Mike

I guess I'm not gettin it. If its a range bag, you're going to the range....why hide it? As for in between, put it in the trunk.

That is exactly what I use, a CPAP travel/vacation bag. The sides and bottom are padded, the entire top zippers back. And I like the adjustable should strap. I get ear muffs, three gun rugs and two boxes of ammo in there.

For the ladies?
I've been using a Thirty-One bag I already had. It's former life was a travel toiletry case but now it works pretty amazingly as an inconspicuous range bag.
I've tried using tool bags but they're just not big enough for what I'm taking to the range.

I mark my tool bags with a small tag indicating caliber, 9mm, 38, 357 44 etc. Ace hardware puts them on sale a couple of times a year. I can just grab a gun and an ammo bag and be ready in a minute.

Lowe's or Home Depot sells tool bags and since Lowe's is in my town that is where I got mine. Mostly for pistols and revolvers. For rifles I was given what could best be described as a instrument case. Can carry a collapsible rest with leather bag that attaches with velcro, spotting scope, targets, ammo, stapler, some small screw drivers and some other assorted stuff. Used to have another case but after I threw out my back went on a less is better setup. That case with all that was in it weighed 46 pounds. Frank

Sometimes I use....
I have a padded backpack for my laptop that makes a great range bag with several compartments, and it keeps your hands free for ammo cans.
A decent 'bookbag' works, too.
I also think that a plastic 4 pistol gun case would have enough room in it for that amount of gear. I could never travel so light.

I told them to keep all their stuff and use the money elsewhere, but they did send me a range bag and it is my main mode of transport. For overflow, I add other bags.
Chrono, a few tools, eye/ear protection for others. Again, I could never travel so light.

I see you are an NRA member. They sent me this one a year or so ago
when I renewed my membership. I don't recall ordering or asking for
it. They just do things like that. I have a nifty little flashlight that's the
shape of a 12 Gauge cartridge. The bag isn't deluxe but it would get
the job done. I don't use it. I have a better one.

Since my "range" is in my back yard, I don't have to go too far but I still needed something to haul stuff to the table and the old cardboard box was getting tattered. I looked all over for range bags but didn't like the premium some places put on specialty accessories. I primarily us it to keep tools and cleaning stuff in one place so I can find them. I settled on a $20 camera bag.
