Default Joe Kidd...Broomhandle Mauser???

I'll bet this has been asked before, but what was the Lamarr character doing with a Broomhandle Mauser which wasn't introduced until 1896? The setting of the movie doesn't appear to be anywhere near that late. This probably has gun purists pulling their hair out.

I read somewhere that it is set in pre-statehood New Mexico territory, September 9, 1850, until January 6, 1912 when the final extent of the territory was admitted to the Union as the State of New Mexico, so timeline could be correct if at the latter end. But who knows it's a movie they can do what they want.

Talking

New Mexico was wild and lawless well into the 1900s. Congress refused to grant statehood to NM for years on the grounds the territory could not establish law and order.

I think the broomhandle and the Savage are both possibly correct.

Leave it to you,35Rem, to notice and mention that. You beat me to it. If I recall I think it had a monte carlo stock.

I kinda thought it was during the Mexican Revolution time period....

Don't really know for sure.

What I really find peculiar is all those hands and horses....

Not one pack horse or mule, for a 7 to 10 day scout.

One of my favorites! The train got to Albuquerque in 1880. A land grant disagreement in NM around 1900 is not hard to believe. Remember we had the Rio Arriba County Courthouse raid in 1967. I think two LEOs wounded. That's up near Chama.
Trivia time - the Santa Fe Railroad does not actually go to Santa Fe. The Santa Fe stop is down at Lamy. NM.

Last time I watched Joe Kidd I recall a date, cast in place, in the gable peak of one of the buildings. . Believe it was 1896. . The building didn't appear to be a new one.

One of Lamar's lines in the movie. "Do you know how many holes I can make in you with my gun?" He really made an effort to appear tough and deadly but I don't think Mr. Kidd was all that impressed. Don Stroud always seem to come off looking like a twerp to me.

Yep, I think it was the courthouse.

So what if it's not 100% accurate. One of the best ever, "The Searchers", featured Colt SAAs and 92 Winchesters in what was supposed to be 1868 Texas.

Also the "Wild Bunch", on which Cowboy Action was built, has an M-1917 Browning in 1916.

I would say period correct especially since the bad guy was rich and could afford anything so its not out of the realm of possibility that someone in his party would have one.

The rifle he uses for his long range shot is a Ross Sporter, I'd presume a 1910 Model,,looks like it anyway.
I've never seen a TD model of one but the Brits would build about anything for you.
The 'scope looks like a Winchester A5. Those are about the same 1910 period and forward I think.
Mounted backwards on Clints rifle I believe but maybe he shoots better with it that way. Clint knows his limitations,,,

.280 Ross caliber,,the open sites(s) on the Sporter have only one leaf ,,,marked '0 to 500 yrds'.
Pretty flat shooter.

Clint only needed to put the bead on the guys hat to bust him in the chest at the 800yds or so I'd think.
Once I get mine shooting I'll try that shot out on paper!

"Close the window Lamar"....
As stated in previous thread, the date of 1896 was shown
on one building in early part of the movie. And it was'nt freshly
built looking so i think the Broomhandle is appropriate.
The clothes and feel of the movie lean more towards early
1900's than the 1850 or so date.
One of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies.
The scene with Clint in the jail cell very early in the movie
where he waylays the guy with "breakfast" lets you know
early on his character is not to be messed with. The same
dude ends up catching a shotgun blast later in the saloon
as Clint is eating a bologna and cheese sandwich.
