Movie stars who hunted. Lee Marvin.
I was perusing books in a flea market and found a 1974 shotgun bible by Robert Stack.
There was an article with pictures about dove hunting and the hunter was Lee Marvin. He loved to dove and duck hunt. He used a Winchester Model 12 with what appears to be a Cutts installed and a German OU 12 gauge shotgun.
He said his biggest gripe was almost every hunting season was spent filming movies.

Big Lee hunted wild pigs on Cape York with dogs and knife on some of his Australia trips.

I thought Richard Widmark was a hunter so searched it. Turns out he was a very vocal anti-gun advocate, who shot scores of people in his movies. William Holden was a hunter. Here's a Keith Brown thread about him and his favorite S&W.

Bing Crosby was a hunter. I remember watching him and Phil Harris hunting birds and ducks on the old American Sportsman Show. Today's hunting shows could take a lesson from them.
Clark Gable was a bird hunter and owned some nice Parker Shotguns.

After Clark's wife Carol Lombard was killed, Clark attempted to enlist. Once they realized who he was it was decided to make him a gunnery officer. He was an expert with the shotgun and shotgun shooting was the closest activity to shooting the 50 cal Browning in the B17-24s. The gunner training started with shotgun shooting, some of if from moving platforms called the 'flex range.' You can still see the outline of the flex ranges at some of the training bases like Nellis, AFB, NV. At that point in time the bomber gunners were being lost faster than they could be trained. So it was believed that if Clark Gable was a gunner he Could help recruitment. Clark made a trip to England and toured the bomber bases. It's been mentioned here before Clark did fly some missions while in England.

Probably the most dedicated current movie star/hunter is R. Lee Ermey. He has been to Africa several times. See

Gary Cooper was a hunter. A film exists of him that demonstrates how good he was with a shotgun on clays.
At one time he appeared in a S&W ad touting the .22 Model 17 or at least was named the 17 when model numbers came in.
If you watch his Westerns, you'll often see the same Colt, which he owned, as well as the same jock strap style holster which he wore on a plain belt without bullet loops. Among those films are Man of the West, Along Came Jones, High Noon and Vera Cruz.

Roy Rogers was an avid hunter and skeet shooter. Years ago, Guns magazine had a cover article about him; he was pictured with a very elaborate Winchester Model 12.

Rocky?
" ......there’s a stuffed 25-foot giraffe in the entrance to the public library. The giraffe and a lion were donated by Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone. He was remodeling one of his restaurants and wanted to donate the animals to a place with children. One of his staffers hailed from Chipley. The animals were initially housed in Chipley Middle School. They were later moved, for space reasons, to the library. The community has a standing invite to Stallone, who has not yet responded."
I'm going to have to go by the local library to see how the sign is worded I don't remember if it specified who killed them but this full mount giraffe and lion are still in the library.

I remember watching him tell on a shooting show telling how he traded with his trap and skeet shooting buddy Clark Gable for that Model 12

Gary Cooper's daughter wrote a book about her father. In the book are pictures of him hunting with Ernest Hemingway. There is also picture of Cooper teaching his daughter to shoot a revolver. I swear it is a Smith & Wesson K22 Masterpiece.

Most of the "real men" in Hollywood were shooters in some manner.
Today there are very few "men" in that town!

When we (wife and I) were on the Board of the LA Chapter of Quail Unlimited, my VP was a retired Maitre'D for Chasen's Restaurant. He knew quite a few stars quite well. Tom Selleck is a serious quail hunter, as were the Mandrell sisters, Joe Mategna (a really nice guy), Lou Ferigno, Leslie Easterbrook (Police Academy). The wife saw Robert Stack (who was an Olympic quality shotgunner) talk about going hunting with his Dutch uncle Clark and "Auntie Carole" out at Uncle Roy's ranch in Victorville. He didn't know "uncle Clark" was a movie star until his early teens.

I don't know how many know this and I'm really sorry to be lost in the details at my old age but Lee Marvin served in WWll on the battle field and the man that was his superior officer was none other than the man who played Capt. Kangaroo for years for the kids and no one was aware of this. Marvin and him both paid their dues in WWll and God Bless these men for their service to their country.

Don't forget O.J. Simpson. He liked to hunt. But he was just in a couple movies and wasn't really a star.

Pee Wee Herman was an avid hunter. I'm a little foggy on the particulars though.

Sorry, but that's not true. Marvin allegedly said something about it on Carson's show, probably while loaded, but the facts don't bear it out. It's like the claim that Fred Rodgers was a sniper. Also not true, he was a Presbyterian minister and never served in the military.
According to Keeshan's bio he enlisted in the USMC Reserve during WWII but was still in the U.S. when Japan surrendered in 1945.
