Suggestions? The best bourbon for one of the most important toasts of a man's life...

Depends on your budget. Distillers Masterpiece from Jim Beam if you don't mind spending $200. My wife got me a bottle for my birthday a few years ago. It was very good!

Normally drink Bookers, but for this occasion I'd get Van Winkle. They are releasing another batch this month.

Did you know that the horse's legs on the corks are in different positions on each bottle? Supposedly if you can afford the whole series of bottles they show the horse in a full stride.
Sounds like horse hocky to sell more to me, but a little Blanton factoid none the less.

I have heard that if you collect them all, Blantons will mount them for you.

Dang... I probably tossed half a dozen away.

Not a bourbon I know but I would encourage any whisky drinker to try some George Dickel Tennessee #12 sour mash sippin' whisky. My opinion is it leaves JD and most others in the dust. This sour mash is made to drink straight or neat however you want to say it. In my opinion the aroma and taste of George Dickel 90 proof #12 is second to none and you ruin the experience of drinking this fine whisky by cutting it with anything except maybe a little water by when you are finished. If you have notions of slamming this down out of a shot glass they'll be picking you up off the floor after about the 3rd one. This whisky isn't for getting hammered it is to savor and enjoy. Been made here in Tullahoma Tn since 1870. Give it a try sometime fellas!

As my taste is more about wine, I have little input other than to extend my best wishes to all and prayer for the new couple in the beginning of their new journey together.

For my special occasions, I love a thirty (30) year tawny port.

I'll give a nod to Blantons. That's my favorite, and I'm a bourbon drinker.

Quite a few years ago I was in Louisville, KY for the gun show. That Friday evening, having nothing better to do, I went to the supermarket size liquor store not far from the fairgrounds. My mission was to find the best bourbon. I figured Louisville should be a great place to search.

I talked to a good number of people in the store, employees and customers alike, seeking opinions on this topic. Soon it was narrowed down to Bookers and Blantons, neither of which had I ever tasted. What to do? I bought a bottle of each.

In short order I was back at the motel. My buddy and I had a serious tasting of both bottles. We agreed on Blantons. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Bookers.

In the years since I have kept a stock of Blantons for special occasions. I have also tried many double-blind taste tests with friends who are veteran bourbon drinkers. Blantons seems to come out on top every time.

Just my $0.02 worth. YMMV.

Pair it up with a gurkha grand reserve cigar. $15 each. Very nice cognac infused cigar. Or you could do the maker's Mark cigar. Same story but it's bourbon infused.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and well wishes. Sounds like Booker's, Knob Creek Select, and Blanton's are the most popular here, I'm reading up on the brands I'm less familiar with. Going to check out the stock at the local liquor warehouse tomorrow.

I like the cigar idea, he got into smoking them on this last deployment. I'll have to stop by a smoke shop and see what they have.

Hey vt_shooter! You wouldn't want to part with one of those bottle of Van Winkle's, would you?:)

WC145, sounds like you have raised a fine young man. Congrats~! I think you have addressed your own question in my mind.

I would share with him what you and your Dad already drink on special occassions. In years to come he will remember the moment you all share not what you drank and he already knows what you like and prefer and I bet he'd prefer to continue your tradition.

After working at 3 cigar stores then joining the army, I got many people into cigars during my deployments

The easiest cigars to care for are the ones sealed in the glass tubes. Cigars need to stay humid and in a good temperature range, so they don't dry out, swell, break, crack... The general rule is 70% humidity and 70 degrees, but if it's sealed in a glass tube, all you have to do is don't leave it in the sun.

I'm a cigar smoker, whisky drinker and an often whiskey drinker. With Bookers at its proof I would dilute it a little. At its higher proof the alcohol will deaden your taste buds very quickly if you drink it neat. Honestly, with Bookers I would skip the smoke. It's flavor profile is one to enjoy all on its own.

If you go Blantons, another of my favorites, drink it neat and pair it up with a good cigar. For something as special as this I would pony up and buy some Padron 64s in the size of your choice (I love the 64 Exclusivo Maduro). If you're quick and lucky A. Fuente Opus Xs are just hitting the shelves and the Fuente Anejos will be hitting soon. With both smaller ring gauges are the best. These cigars all smoke great when aged a few years. If you have a well maintained humidor you could buy a box, lay them down and smoke more from the box when he returns and on his anniversaries.

Eagle Rare...if you can find it.....smooth as glass and usually only around $25 a bottle...don't let the price fools you....Congrats on raising a fine son!
