I'm thinking of adding a flare gun to the gear I carry in my work rig. I work out in the middle of nowhere and it might come in handy.

I'd like something a little more substantial than the red plastic ones I see advertised. Are flares still available for the military surplus ones?

Any suggestions?

On the boat we use self contained parachute flares that will reach an altitude of about 1000 feet. They are about 30 bucks a pop at a marine hardware store. Then we have a 25mm metal OLIN flare gun with loads for both meteor and parachute flares, again reaching 1000 feet. . Finally we have the plastic 12 gauge OLIN flare gun, which just shoots meteor flares good to about 300 feet. After that we have enough strobes on board to replicate a Manhattan rave party. If something were to happen to us at night there would be nobody asking, "See anything?"
That pretty much covers the water.

I Understand you desire for a flare gun. I have a Olin plastic "12" gauge for my supplies for boating. I also have a 19mm HK flare pistol, but they quit importing the system and replacement flares. These were really neat little deals, the flares were 19mm in dia. and looked like 45 swc on steroids. The pistol was single action, and magazine fed. They came with 10 flares which was 2 full mags worth. New Jersey outlawed them right away. I still have mine and a few flares. My D-I-L is from Germany, and returns home frequently, hopefully she will be allowed to bring some back with her. As for The larger sizes, S&W made some flares for the tear gas guns, but I believe they were LE only. Ivan

Those 12 ga flares are not worth a ****. Shoot one at night and see what I mean. I carry strobes and parachute flares. For day time Smoke flares. And BELIEVE those expiration dates on the 12 ga flares.

Pop flares

I have used the military pop flames, now there is some light. Single use tube of undetermined gauge. pull the top off put the top on the bottom give it a hard slap with the palm of your hand while hold it up right with the other. and they were pretty water proof. And if inside a building made sure they clear the eves when you launch one of those bad boys, don't ask how I know.

Yes, they're kind of impressive. WP (white parachute) is good, so are RS (red star). There are a lot of others, but those are the two in the basement. When you get someone young and innocent, they're fun to fire. Really impresses them.

The OPs problem will be harder to solve. I assume he's planning on using them when he's way out and no one knows to look for him. They used to make flares for the common centerfire rifle calibers like .30-06 and .308, .30-30 etc. I haven't seen those for sale in a while. Even the little marine 12 ga solve a problem in that you can easily store 6 or more flares in a tiny space. If you've got enough of them, there's no reason to sweat one or two misfires. Penguin Industries used to make a pen gun that would take teargas or a bunch of flares. I haven't seen one of those in a while and don't even know where mine are hiding.

NATO also made a very similar but pretty rugged signal flare of the same design as Penguin. They even had "report" cartridges available. I question the legality of those. Its like a flying M80. I still have a bunch of the flare cartridges. If you can find that item, it would be the best bet I think.

Folks don't understand that FBI agents sometimes find themselves hiking straight into nowhere. Sometimes good, other times maybe bad. My brother had to investigate something involving a railroad in Wisconsin. He didn't mind and even found a train engine that had rolled over and into a ravine. Long ago. It seems crime isn't always in the city.

So consider something small and easy to carry. While more sturdy and heavy would be good for the car, the little red plastic ones are light enough to fit in a small pack and you'd never notice it.

This whole thread reminds me of one of the M A S H books. Not the early ones by Hooker, but one of the later one by Butterworth.

Some big-city reporter was headed to the wilds of Maine to interview Hawkeye, and got all supplied up at Abercrombie and Fitch. He had him his White Hunter jacket, with the belt and the bullet loops, and his khaki shorts and long socks and pith helmet. And they had supplied him with flares and a flare gun.

Something in the woods scared him up a tree, and he was shooting off his flares, for help. Someone called the Highway Patrol. “There’s a ship hit an iceberg, in Miller’s Woods, and is sinking.”

WHAT???

“Well, there’s white flares being shot out of Miller’s Woods, and that’s international maritime for ‘struck an iceberg and am sinking’.” :D
