Gents, We've been responsible dog owners for 18 years. The dogs we've had, we got from the animal shelter, were two or three months old, and crate trained them from the start, and quickly learned to go outside. Currently we have 1 dog, she's 3 years old and is a german short hair pointer.

We are contemplating taking a dog off a young ladies hands who rescued her from an abusive home. Dog is a 7 month old shepherd / husky mix. The dog is has a good disposition, but is not house broken yet, and is pretty wild.

How difficult will it be to get this dog trained / on track?

Impossible question. How good of a trainer are you, and how much time do you have for remedial training? If the dog respects and wants to please you I'd think that you'd have him trained in a couple of weeks, tops. Kept in a crate at night and with a good effort on your part I should think it would be a worthwhile endeavor. Sounds like he may be a heck of a good dog, and he's still plenty young for good training.

Interesting mix,shepards are very smart and huskies can be fairly aloof.

If you do adopt the dog prepare to be the alpha. They will test their boundaries. We had a husky shepard mix when I was growing up. He was scary smart! Needed a lot of exersize, and used to raid the garden. Fresh tomatoes beware!

I have owned Siberian Huskies for over 20 years. With a mix, it's hard to know how much of the Husky traits will be present. Huskies learn quick, if you start early. You also have to be extremely consistent. At 7 months, it could be a tough go to house train, and it may try your patience. Keep your cool, take it in stride, and don't give up. One day, all of a sudden, things will click. Another Husky trait to be aware of, is Huskies are escape artists, can be unresponsive if not trained, and should not be let off leash. They can be a handful and then some. Only breed I would consider though.

If you know how to crate train a dog, and are home during the day, it should not take too long. Otherwise, you could be in for a long haul.

I have a husky and he's very friendly. Smart dog, but they really need to understand who the boss is. Hope you got a good vacuum cleaner for the hair.

The question is not "how hard will it be", but "how rewarding will it be" (for both the dog and you).

Your heart will make that decision for you.

We have a chow/GSD mix. We're lucky in that ,most of the time, the GSD side is in charge, trainable and eager to please. Some days, alas, are CHOW days.....
