Gun for sale or trade...big mistake!
I have sold many guns on Armslist and everything always went through very
smoothly. We just met at a popular parking lot near my house, they gave me the cash, and both parties were happy. Sometimes I even had a few minutes of nice conversation talking about guns or hunting with the buyers. Well recently I advertised a Taurus .380 and stated "for sale" or "trade". I thought I might trade someone for a nice gun, but I must have gotten 40 or 50 text messages and people were wanting to trade everything from plywood siding and old fishing gear to tattoo work. I got text messages at midnignt, and 3am and my phone woke my wife up and she was REALLY MAD! From now on it is cash only and the price is FIRM in my ads!

On a musician's ad board I once had a guitar listed (with my phone number) for sale for $1800 or "interesting trade". A guy called me and asked if I would trade it for a "fun date" with his girlfriend. I told him I was happily married and in my 50's. He said "well, my mom is hot".
I suggested to him that to get my 1800 bucks worth all three of them would need to stain my house and seal my driveway. After a moment of silence and with total sincerity he told me he'd check with them and get back to me.
And they have the right to vote!

This is why if I ever want to get shed of a common make and model firearm I take it to a trusted dealer and put it up on consignment sale. I don't have to deal with folks, I don't have to deal with the transfer myself. I think it's worth 10 or 15 percent of the sale to avoid this sort of thing.

You do know we have this modern invention called e-mail that does not wake the momma bear right? Yeah I have received some stupid stuff for offers like a bicycle, used I Phone, small block Chevy engine, bow and arrows and my favorite inner tubes. I'm not making this stuff up.

I traded a bunch of old motorcycle tires for a brand new Glock. I traded a bunch of my target stands for a brand new Springfield Stainless Mil-Spec 1911. And yes, I have traded welding work for ammo, as my signature line states.
I like the barter system.

I once traded some smoking pipes (Mershaun, Caminetto, etc ) for a brand new model 52-2 in the box.
But for a Taurus, maybe a couple cigars.

It's like everyone wants a gun, but few actually have cash these days...
I've had a Sony surround sound entertainment system offered for a ruger lc380. The man said he has very little experience with guns, he's 62 and disabled and his son stole his desert eagle. So he stole his son's surround sound system to trade for another gun. This guy was very... Off?

As a rule, it's best to allow first contacts by email only. That way you control timing, responses etc. I never give out my phone number on any potential sale until terms have been agreed to on both side. Keeps tire kickers to a minimum too.

You also limit input.
Texting is way easier, and a lot of your potential customers are lazy. One must cater to his clientele.

You have to be specific about trades. I notice on Armslist that the fewer the words you use in your ad, the crazier the responses you'll get. I had one listed there a few months ago and was clear that the only trade I would consider was fixing the axles on my truck and that it had to be done right. I actually had a mechanic contact me and we did business. Just have to be specific is all.
