RIP Peter O'Toole
The man who played Lawrence of Arabia has left us after a long illness. Some may also recall the wonderful movie High Spirits where he played the owner of a haunted tourist castle. He also had a brief but important role in the very underrated Stardust from 2007.
Fly high, Freebird.

My favorite Peter O'Toole performance is in "My Favorite Year" in which he plays a thinly disguised Errol Flynn, scheduled to appear on a thinly disguised "Your Show of Shows". He's such an unreliable drunk that he can no longer get roles anymore and the star of the live TV show is scared that he'll either show up drunk or not at all. A young Jewish kid on the production staff is such a diehard fan that he volunteers to keep him out of trouble and get him to the set on time and sober. As they used to say on Cleveland State's film show on their radio station, "Hijinks ensue."
It's hilarious, exciting and touching.

I can't remember the name of the movie, but one of his I really liked he was the operator of a crane barge and he got obsessed with recovering a spent torpedo on the shoreline and hunting down the German sub that launched it. He used the crane to hoist it up vertically and drop on the sub.
It was pretty intense and he was not to be deterred.

Cmort,
It's actually based on a young Mel Brooks babysitting Errol Flynn on the Show of Shows.
My Favorite Year
One of my favorite movie of lines of all time "I'm not an actor, I'm a movie star!"

After reading his online biography, I did not get that impression. Where are you getting your information?

That was Murphy's War. He was actually a British sailor and his ship had been sunk by the same sub. He tried to sink it with an airplane first. Then he resorted to the torpedo.
He was a great actor and will be sadly missed. Unfortunately TCM can add another star to this years departed.

He was magnificent in "Lawrence of Arabia". I also thought he was great in "Becket" and "The Lion in Winter", just to name a couple of others.
He was married to Sian Phillips until 1979, and they had two children together.
Rest in peace.

RIP.
"The Lion in Winter" and "My Favorite Year" are two great ones.
Thanks for the explanation, Sip. I knew it was based on the Sid Caesar show, but didn't know the Mel Brooks/ E. Flynn link.
From MFY, when he goes into the ladies room:
"This is for ladies only!"
"So is *this*, ma'am, but every now and then I have to run a little water through it."

I am of course saddened by his loss, but delighted that we had him as long as we did. What a fine actor. His last major film, Venus, which also gave him his last Oscar nomination, was astonishing. I come close to tears just thinking about his portrayal of an elderly actor experiencing one last flight of love and passion for a young thing who appears to be unworthy of his attention or respect.
By all rights, the man should have been dead half his lifetime ago. He was candid that had he not stopped (or at least cut severely back on) drinking, he would have suffered the same early death or diminished capacity that befell so many other excellent actors of his generation. His alcohol consumption masked a serious health problem that eventually cost him much of his stomach and his pancreas, a surgery that turned him into an instant diabetic and left him so for the last 30-some years of his life. Perhaps through a toughness that his blithe and debonair exterior masked, or perhaps because of his Irish what-the-****ness, he survived decades longer than any sane person would have predicted, turning in a number of fine performances by which we can remember him and judge the full breadth his extraordinary talent.
I almost met him once. When he was filming Creator in the early '80s, some of the pick-up scenes were filmed on the UC Irvine campus where I worked at the time. I got to watch him film an outdoor no-dialog scene that did not ultimately appear in the film. It was late afternoon and I had to leave to take care of some obligation that I no longer recall. In my absence, I was later told, he came to the offices of the research project where I was employed and asked if he could use a room to change back into street clothes. Since I wasn't there, they ushered him into my office. A few moments later, he emerged, charmingly thanked and winked at the secretaries and bullpen employees, and took his leave.
I admired this guy immensely without ever having come to know him except through his films. It may seem a ludicrous comparison, but I haven't been this sad about a skilled entertainer's death since I heard of Steve McQueen's passing. O'Toole was the better actor, but I can't help thinking they each would have recognized something similar in the other.
So long, Peter. Thanks for the astonishing body of work. When I think of Henry II, I think of you.

If you haven't seen his star turn in Woody Allen's 'What's New Pussycat?!', you are in for quite a treat. It is a pure comedy, with lots of sexual content for laughs, also starring Peter Sellers and a drop-in by Richard Burton, Ursula Andress and, oh yes, that title song by that fellow, uh, Jones...right!

I hate to say this but I most remember him from his roll in Club Paradise.
His line at the end of the movie was what made it memorable for me.

This is my favorite O'Toole role. He played it with humor & elegance -- a rare combination. I love how he "drops in" at a party! Remember the "drunk suit"??

I believe he had another child with a girlfriend later. My impression was that he was very straight. But even if he weren't he would have been a brilliant actor and interesting character. He was a great interview subject, candid and witty.

I think these following three tunes +1 would have been favorites of his and is my way of wishing this fine actor---eternal peace.
Even though I dont speak a word pf French and understand even less, I think this along w. the ending footage-fits Peter O'Toole to a T.E. Lawrence "T."
Mon Légionnaire Ute Lemper - YouTube
And:
What a Wonderful World Louis Armstrong - YouTube
And I think this fits him. I do speak and understand some Deutsch, and think that Black/Brown are the Hazelnuts (Schwarzbraun ist die Hazelnuss) is appropriate.
Schwarzbraun Ist Die Haselnuss - YouTube
And this one for the heck of it"
Im Feldquartier - YouTube

Big fan of Lawrence of Arabia, one of the best movies ever... I got to see it on the big screen once, and believe that you really need to see it that way to really appreciate it.
He seemed to be a talented actor, made some great movies, but did not know much about him otherwise. Sad to see these classic actors pass on. RIP.

As for this whole gay thing, all I can say is I live in a gay neighborhood and when I was young, I would get upset when guys checked me out...then I found out that gay men are very particular in the area of looks and I realized it was a compliment. Now I get upset because they don't check me out.

His history sure doesn't indicate he was light in the loafers. In fact he was somewhat a rounder....He was such a good actor he could make you believe...He played TE Lawrence in the movie so well it must be remembered that the real Lawrence was a very strange guy. A highly educated person, Lawrence was a strange closet warrior...Many wondered about him....He was very pro Arab even when the French and British were planning to shaft the Arabs after the war.....Lawrence tried to talk the Arabs into consolidating to maintain their control of their country. I might add that his superiors weren't keen on that idea. However he had become so popular he couldn't be completely shut up about the shaft they were sort of asking for (the Arabs couldn't agree on anything)...I think he even argued their point to the League of Nations and to the Empire after the war was over. A educated man who found he was adapt at waging war.......His book "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" turned out to be prophetic. Actually he was a little guy in stature 5'5" and about 120 lbs.....Not exactly leading man looks..... Goes to show you, hard to tell a book by it's cover. My guess O'Toole was the absolute best casting for that part....

I liked his roles, I'm surprised not to see "Lord Jim" mentioned. I remember seeing it in school of all places when I was a kid, and really liked. L of A is at the top of his list IMHO...

Are we talking about T E Lawrence or Peter O'Toole. Remember O'Toole was playing a part. The Turks had some strange habits, especially their upper class......I think both O'Toole and Ferrer played those parts well...History states that Lawrence was a changed person after his capture by the Turks....However he was released by the Turks. I might add they paid a pretty heavy price for that mistake....If you can believe written history......

I thought Lord Jim was his best role. He was a hero
with feet of clay (like all men), but his word was his
bond and his eventual downfall.

With the exception of "Lawrence", I probably haven't seen his best. I will have to do better. I still like Night of the Generals, and although I haven't seen all of it, what I've seen of The Ruling Class was hilarious.

Lowell Thomas was the US reporter that wrote the first book about the Arab revolt......I think the name of the book was "With Lawrence in Arabia" Thomas was both a fan and detractor of T E Lawrence I think he thought Lawrence was a shameful self promoter. He also found Lawrence a genius in desert warfare. However after the treaty talks Lawrence tried to lose himself as an enlisted man in the British army under an assumed name....Best movie I ever saw! especially considering it was made before all the special photo effects were common. A real BIG Screen masterpiece in my uneducated opinion. I think partially because of the studio system allowed so many top rated stars in one movie. I might add it sure helped Omar Sharif's acting career.

Apologies, the first line refers to O'Toole, the second naturally to Lawrence. I always thought that Lawrence was raped by the Turk officer, hence his change in personality.

RIP Peter, you will be missed. It was a line in "My Favorite Year" but Peter O'Toole was in fact, a movie star.
It's probably too good to be true but I once heard a story regarding him before he quit drinking. While living in Dublin, he woke one day to find himself somewhere in England after a multi-week bender. Making his way back to Dublin, he arrived home announcing to his wife, "Don't pay the ransom, I've escaped!" Like I said, it's probably too good to be true but if it's not, it should be. It would have fit him so well.
