Default Pocket Knives (Folders)

Texas Star correctly pointed out that the other knife thread about fixed blade knives was not the place to talk about pocket
knives.
I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 pocket knives, some well used, some never used. I'm looking to add some more new ones to my collection.
If you all have some pictures or just suggestions for new ones I'd like to hear about 'em. My limit is about $100.00 per knife but if you have some more expensive ones I'd still love to see 'em.
Thanks and

Sorry no pic, but is really like my CRKT Denali.
http://www.rockcreek.com/crkt/denali-knife/1919.rc
About $50 bucks.

It has great balance, all edges are smoothed and the knife is very comfy to hold and use but tank-tough and holds an edge well.

It has a clip for the pocket, and the blades spring lock can be locked open with a safety lever.

Two cons are it's a bit heavy, and I don't like serrations.

But I like the rest of the knife so well, I carry it a ton.

I have a German made Boker folder with a 3" drop point blade of 440c stainless and stag handle scales. Beefy knife but still worthy of front pocket carry. Cost about 125.00 shipped with box and sheath.

Benchmade is one that I have never bought, that will be on my need to buy list.

I have several Emersons from the pre-Wave design days. Great folding knives, although quite pricey now.

I have a nice older Uncle Henry I bought a few years back for $12 or so. I used it for everything since, cleaning fish, gutting deer and everything in between. One of the last of the American made Schrade knives. In the photo is also an Old Timer, this small knife will probably become my son's first knife when he gets old enough.

When I am not where I need the Uncle Henry, I have a Smith & Wesson 1st Responder.

I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 or 20 folders. The ones I carry the most are Benchmades, the 551 Griptilian, and the 585 Mini Barrage. The Barrage is an assisted opener, very quick and solid. The assist is not really necessary, as the Benchmade Axis Lock knives open so easily. It cost something north of a hundred bucks, but I have never regretted it.

If you haven't tried a Benchmade, I would suggest either the Griptilan, or the Mini Grip, the one knife I really wish I had gotten for Christmas. The Griptilians are among their most popular designs, for good reason. They just feel right in the hand. My son and SIL both carry these, and are pretty much unseparable from them. My boy has more to choose from than I do, and his Mini Grip has pushed them all out of his rotation.

The Kershaw Leek is another design I like to carry, especially when wearing a suit. Very thin, it disappears in the pocket.

Too big for EDC, but one you probably don't want to be without is the Buck 110 folder. My guess is, you have already got one. It is hard to imagine accumulating 40 folders without ever picking up one of these.

I have a little Schrade similar to your little Old Timer that is a Copenhagen marked knife I plan on giving to my oldest grand-son in a few years. Actually think it is the same knife, just marked a litte differently. I just got another grand-son about 7 months ago, I can't wait to give him one as well. I've been saving them up and I didn't even know what for, haha.

I have an Old Timer-marked stockman similar to your Uncle Henry. It cost about the same, but I'm gonna say you got he better deal. Mine doesn't say USA on it anywhere. It doesn't say China either, but I am pretty sure I know where it came from. I like it anyway.

I also have a bunch of blades, some of them for a very long time.
Lately I have been buying American made knives. I especially like Great Eastern and Queen. I collect US Military, especially aircrew and survival knives. I still got the saw back knive that I carried in SEA.
I like blades from all over, but must admit I have a prejudice against Chinese made knives. I like the Japanese and Taiwanese blades.
Sometimes I go into a sharpening marathon. I get out both my electric sharpeners and away I go. I believe that my Cold Steel Japanese made folder has the hardest steel that I ever sharpened.

I have two Leeks a standard one and one I received as a gift with an inlaid handle on the side away from the clip. It's too pretty to use! I love my Leek, it's perhaps the best at holding an edge. I don't know how good the Bokers are, I don't carry or use knives that don't have a locking blade.

Most of my knives are folding pocket knives though I do have some fixed blade. I have Case, Great Eastern, Northfield, Queen, Henckels, Boker, Mooremaker, Schrade, and I usually stick with knives made in the USA. I have Benchmade in the mini griptillion as mentioned above. I am old school when it comes to pocket knives and always carry a 3 blade stockman of one brand or the other. Pocket knife choice is a personal thing for all of us. It also depends if you want stainless steel or carbon steel in the blades. I like them both.

I've been carrying a Mini Griptillian for over a year now. IMHO, it is the perfect carry knife. Ideal size, great edge retention, bullet proof construction.

When my wife buys me a Christmas gift or birthday etc I know I'll usually get at least one knife. I always instruct her to not buy anything made in China. I know there are some Chinese knives that are pretty good quality but I don't want to take a chance. German, American and Japanese blades have been good so far.

Years ago I got interested in CaseXX pen knives, I have carried one for years. Anyway I must have bought about 30 different styles before I came to my senses. It's a nice collection, I haven't looked at it in years. May have to dig it out.

I'm also a big fan of Benchmade. Back in the early to mid 1990s I became really interested in the really high quality folders that were coming out of Japan and the US. My first few were from Spyderco but I soon gravitated to Benchmade. I must have bought 25 of them. Still have all of them and most have never been used. However there are two that are always with me. The first is the Mel Pardue "Gentleman's" knife. I worked in an environment that would not allow me to carry a larger knife with a pocket clip. The "Gentlemans" is perfect, small, slim and superbly made. The other is a Pat Crawford design, I can't think of the name but it has "skeletonized" aluminum handles. It's my "go to" fishin' knife. Can't say what comparable knives from Benchmade would cost today, but I think they have become quite pricey.

Usually the top one. Chinese but so far it's been good to me. Kinda cute... the "China" only shows when it's halfway open.

I also have one or two standard issue Buck 110 around somewhere.

a Case stag trapper , Rob Ogg folder and an Emerson CQC-7 are always with me. Bob Ogg is dead so his plain every day pocket knives are quite expensive if you can find one. I have had the Emerson 20 years or so and the only trouble I have had with it was the hinge screw would loosen a little bit but some blue Loctite solved that.

Just did a quick count. I have 49 pocket knives that I can immediately find. I'm sure I have others lying around somewhere. I've given a bunch away, too. Each one of my grandchildren gets one when he/she turns seven years old.

I have Case, Buck, Puma, Kershaw, Boker, Camillus, Ulster, SAK, and probably a few others that I can't find at the moment.

I tend to prefer Case trappers and usually pack one of those in the front pocket of my Wranglers on a daily basis. I also tend to lean more towards the high carbon steel blades over the stainless...but the bottom line is good quality steel, whether it's high carbon or stainless.

Here a few pictures of some of my favorites.

Marshwheeling, yes I have a Buck 110. Goodness what a solid feeling knife. I may buy another as a glove compartment knife.

Benchmade are great, CRKT gives great value. Probably above your limit but I really like the ZT 300 series knives.

It's not necessarily a limit, just means I may have cut back on the number of knives I buy.

I'm a great fan of the older, U.S.-made Schrades, especially the Old Timers in 1095 steel. My favorite is the 8OT, a 4" stockman pattern. Saw-cut Delrin scales that gave a good grip when wet. The steel took and held an excellent edge and was easy to resharpen. If I could only have one pocketknife (perish the thought!) that would be the one I'd choose.

The original Uncle Henry line from Schrade was also good, with 440A steel, but I'm just a 1095 believer.

The ones made in China, since the real Schrade went under, appear seriously inferior to me.

For a while Cold Steel sold a line of pocketknives called the Country Classics. I bought several and they're quite decent. Made by Camillus, they were also 1095 as I recall, and had jigged Delrin scales. Good useful knives, especially the full-sized and medium stockman models. Very sharp out of the box.

I've owned several of the Queen pocketknives with D2 blades and bone stag scales. Nice, tough knives, most of which I gave away to friends. Held an edge well, but D2 can be a bear to sharpen.

Guess I just have plebeian tastes to go with my lightweight income.

A yellow handle Case pocket knife of some kind, it's the law around here. And, a Cold Steel fixed blade on my belt.

Fishslayer, I surely would like to add one of the TL 29 kits (knife, pliars and case) to my collection. If you or anybody else see's one for sale please let me know. I know they are available on eBay but I don't buy there.

I've got more pocket knives laying around than I know what to do with but my all time favorite is a Marbles (Gladstone) Large Stockman 3 blade with Stag handles.

If you are interested in antique folders I have a hundred or so. Far too many to list. If antique folders are your thing and have an interest in a particular style, pattern, handle material, PM me and I will check my inventory.

Thank you! Do you have one of the TL 29 kits? If not I still might be interested in the knife alone.

Kitgun, that is a beautiful collection.
Can you please identify the knife with the brass and wood handles?

I'm right there with CatSnipah and the SOG Flash II Tanto. Never had one of the new fancy one-hand opening knives before. I did a fair amount of research before I bought this particular knife. I have read opinions since then that maybe I could have gotten a better one but up to this point I think I made a good choice. I would like to get a different brand at so point for comparison.

Victorinox bought Wenger some years ago and has now discontinued Wenger brand knives. A large part of the reason is that knife sales dropped so much after all the laws passed about carrying them on planes and into public and other buildings that they could no longer afford to compete with themselves by offering Wengers, too.

Osama bin Laden won, in that he forced a change in our freedoms, inc. the ability to wear knives into a lot of places that we once could.

I can't list every knife that I own, but will say that what I really carry most is some sort of Swiss Army knife in a pants pocket, a small one in an inside coat poket, and a SwissChamp in the nice leather SOS Kit pouch in my briefcase.

On my belt is either a Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn in either of the two larger sizes or a Benchmade Model 710 or a Puma equivalent to the Buck Model 110. The Puma was a limited production item with white Micarta scales. It is otherwise their Prince model. (The Prince has stag scales.)

I occasionally wear some other knife, if the mood strikes, but those are the basics. A Spyderco Endura has gone in the car glovebox.

BTW, Ron J. said that I rightly objected to pocketknives being discussed in another thread about sheath knives. There have been a number of knife threads here, but the most recent involved someone (Pownal?) asking specifically about the Puma Hunter's Pal. What I really objected to was everyone else telling him about their own favorite knives. I think only I actually answered his question about the Hunter's Pal. And I do think it's a superb small knife that is worth the $200 cost he quoted, if NIB with accessories. That is for those made prior to about 1992, when the Lauterjung family sold Puma. It has since changed hands again, and current ones have some shortcuts in them. Some are made in Spain or perhaps even in the Orient. But even those from Solingen have changed.

Older Pumas are becoming collector items and the price is only going to escalate when a book on Puma appears. A Puma collector and dealer is writing one now. I don't know when it'll be published.

If you are referring to the military signal corps set of plyers and TL-29 in a leather case, yes I have a few sets. I have a number of different TL-29's and one real head scratcher that dates to civil war era.

When I am not where I need the Uncle Henry, I have a Smith & Wesson 1st Responder.

David-

Thanks for the nice photo of the Uncle Henry King Ranch model. I have one, and paid about what you did. That was excellent value then, and even more so now, for those who bought then. I think the cost of the real Schrade Uncle Henrys is climbing and that will continue, as more people realize that current knives are made in China by a firm that bought the name when Schrade folded.

I suspect the only better knife value I ever got that beat what I paid for the Uncle Henry was when I bought a new Puma Hunter's Pal for $11 at a discount store. They were probaby on sale. But even "list"price was under $20 then. Boy, has THAT changed!

I hope that your injured arm has improved? I continue to offer prayers that all improves for you and yours. The best to you in 2014!

Gerber also made a version of the knife with two blades as small game knife with nickel silver and wood. the blades were a little soft so the downside you had to sharpen a little more often. the upside was they were easy to sharpen.

I collect Victorinox, I didn't plan on it, it just sort of happened. A large segment of my work knives were Forschner's made by Victorinox, a best bang for the buck IMHO. I started carrying SAKs many years ago so as not to damage the Boker Tree Brand knives and razors I was collecting. Then my wife got me a new watch one day, a Victorinox Swiss Army. Now I have a ton of Victorinox stuff.

WOW!!! I'm impressed with Smith357's collection of Swiss Army knives!!

I only have one...a Wenger that my grandmother brought back from Switzerland and gave to my father about 60 years ago. My dad gave it to me when I was around ten or so. A classic old knife.

By the way...I appreciate the information that Texas Star shared about Victorinox buying Wenger years ago. I never knew that and always wondered why we never see Wenger SAK's anymore.

I've got a few, odds & ends. A bunch of swiss army knives & others. I've got a Buck 110 that is forty six years old now, near as I can figure. Its been a great knife! One of these days I'm going to splurge on a Benchmade or a Boker assisted opener.

Thanks and
Re: OP. I don't have so very many knives. Actually just a few. There is a little Benchmade Auto-Benchmite 3100 that I use w/ dress clothing and on Sunday. There is a larger Benchmade 5000 Presidio that I carry daily. There is a Bartram made Hen & Rooster 4" trapper w/ very pretty stag grips that I bought for my father. After his death it was given to me. There is a plain stainless steel USGI pocket knife by Camelius dated 1983 that belonged to my identical-twin (deceased) brother. I picked it up out of the trash when his wife was cleaning his things out after his death. There is a Boker made V-42 reproduction that I use in the church office as a tactical letter opener. There is a nice U.S. made Marbles hunting knife. I remember when they were commonly available. Wanted one then, but didn't have the money. Very thankful to now have one. There is a little two inch long two bladed Buck pocket knife, a plain little thing w/ the standard black handle. I've had it since I was in seminary. It was given to me by my brother. For a number of years it was missing. Very happily it turned up in a cardboard box along with a Silva compass and some other items from Boy Scouts. Cool.

Default Folding Knives

Looks like all of us have some type of knives we have collected or continue to collect. I used to buy a new "Case" every pay day back in the 60's & early 70's, as a result I have some that are considered collectable but all are useable. I stopped purchasing when the quality for the money started to decline. The statement about useable means that the quality remains although the collect ability is not present. My theory has matriculated to buying something Made In The USA as opposed to the Chinese Stuff! If we could adopt this policy that may help a little to stop the import flux and let the American Manufacturers know that we appreciate their effort and product quality. Of course, its an idea that's need to catch on!
I wanted to add that the Victorinox brand is quality in addition to Made In USA! There are others.
