John Wayne-Liberty Valence Question
Aloha,
I was watching John Wayne in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" the other night.
In it he gives the girl a "cactus Rose" plant.
I Googled Cactus Rose and came up with a whole bunch of cactus with some pretty flowers.
So, I guess it is a Real flower/plant.
Movie is in Black & White and the flower is a bright white.
Can anyone enlighten me further about the flower in the movie?
I admit every now and then to learning something new.
Thank You.

I always wondered how James Stewart could be a young "pilgrim" right out of law school who looked fifty years old, which he was in real life then. Older actually.

If I remember correctly it was some variety of prickly pear that was in bloom. Some of them produce produce very colorful blooms in the spring. The pads of the younger ones are edible and called nopal.

Cactus flowers are some of the prettiest there is. They always seem perfectly formed are hardy looking, and have bright or deep colors. There is a wide variety of cactus each with it's own flower. Cactuses are easy to care for in pots, rock gardens, etc. They don't bloom often but when they do they are gorgeous.

"That's my steak Liberty!"
If you watch real close you'll see The Duke twirl his revolvers during the scene where John Wayne was shooting buckets of paint and calling Jimmy Stewart "pilgram". He was really quite good at it. He does it in just about every western I've seen him in.
Great movie, Vera Miles was as pretty as a cactus rose.

I am still a young Pilgrim. It's in my script. I have been The Pilgrim since CB radio days.
For you young guys- CB radio allowed you to talk to people who you usually wouldn't talk to and hear them say things that you don't really want to hear. Similar to the internet except the CB only had about 10 miles range.

One of my top ten favorite movies for sure. The reason Jimmy Stewart was late graduating from law school is because he was too busy bombing Nazis.

Ever notice near the end at the political rally. Jimmy goes into a room to sulk. John goes in past some rally signs in the corner. John talks Jimmy out of his mood and they walk out, past different signs.

Busted! Thought you could get away with disguising a floral question as a western movie question. Tsk tsk.

Hi Burp,
I guess they were shooting for middle ground as he played a wide range of age from pilgrim to senator.
It is a movie high on my favorites list.
Thanks
Mike

It's kind of like the Cartwrights from Bonanza, a fifty year old father and three forty year old sons.

I know, mine too. For me Lee Marvin was the big screen stealer. I read somewhere John Ford wanted extra huge steaks for those scenes in that wild steakhouse. Another bonus was the ever reliable great character actor Strother Martin.

I love the movie! I have it on DVD and watch it a couple times a year. I am a big John Wayne fan and have many of his movies. Big Jake, Rooster Cogburn, War Wagon, True Grit, Fort Apache and others.
Another good actor in The man who Shot Liberty is the guy who played Mr. Peabody. Eloquent editor of the Shinbone Star and a town drunk at the same time.
