For you northern folks, we are hearing on the news of temps at night in the -20 to -30 degree range in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, at what temputaure do you guys just say enough is enough? What do you do when its -30 degrees outside?

What do we do?

Well this morning I found the breaker had popped on my truck heater when the air compressor kicked in. So no warm truck engine.

It was 12 below zero, or for you Canucks it was -24C. ;)

I wore a jacket, but no gloves. The wind was hard on my hands pumping fuel when I got to the gas station.

After the sun came up a little more the temperature warmed to a balmy 0 degrees and I left the jacket in the truck while I ran errands in and out of businesses and stores. I did have a long sleeve t-shirt on and a baseball cap.

Once you get used to -20 and -30, 0 degrees is a cake walk.

My kids went skiing last night when it was -6F out. It's just that we get used to it!!

Now in the spring, when it warms to 40 or 45, about half the people around here are in shorts and t-shirts.... :p

You just get used to it.

I live just south of Atlanta and won't move any farther north. If I could, I'd be living on the beach in Naples, FL.

We lived in Peoria IL for 15 years (I know its no comparison to MN SD ND etc) and its far enough north that when winter comes it typically stays. There were times there was snow on the ground from nov to march.

Well now we are back in the homeland, MO, just outside of STL. When its zero degrees I easily tolerate it because in a week in a half or two it 45 degrees.

Winter gets old (especially as I get older). Not so much for the cold, but for the gray skies and lack of sunshine. We get 100" of snow a year, but seldom get below 0 more than a handful of times per winter. -15F in almost unheard in this area and only happens in the dead of a crystal clear night.

I still walk the dog, maybe not as far and with a bit more vigor. I let the car warm up a bit longer. I don't mind plowing the driveway or shoveling our walkway. I might alter my plans somewhat, but will do anything that's pressing.

So, as of this point in my life....the cold? Bring it!

Lost Lake,

Wasen't it you that had your truck go through the lake ice a while ago? how much ice formes on the lake in winter?

I have sat in a hot tub at -45 hair froze into little spikes. I enjoyed the sauna at those temps then out into the cold and come in when the steam quit rising off of me.

Anything below 78F is too damned cold, but I can deal with temps in the 20's if I have to.

I love a bit of snow and 30's for hunting with my rifle.

I kinda feel that cold is a frame of mind. I just put on my fur lined jock strap and zip up my coat pull out my stocking cap and go about my business.

-15 is as low as I will play in. Lower than that is work only. Over 80 is too hot over 90 stay in the AC.
