I saw that earlier, and expected the Hanson Brothers to hit the ice.

The only really excellent sports team on a regular basis (as opposed to a one time flash in the pan.) Was the old Houston Aeros. Ice hocky team Featuring Gordy Howe and his two sons Mark and Marty. "The Fighting Howes " was the affectionate name for them. If you ever started any thing with any one of them you best not do it on an empty stomach and get ready to eat some pain. You get all three of them if you get one.
I don't know if any of you old timers/hocky fans remember this team. But those boys could SKATE and they could score too. I got very interested in that sport watching them skate.
Unfortunately their manager, Wife to Gordy and mother to Mark and Marty got greedy and the team folded rather that be held up by this over ambitious and crazy woman that felt it better to put the team out of business than to negotiate reasonably like a professional.

Is it my imagination, or do most hockey fans only get really excited when the gloves (and a tooth or three) hit the ice?
Of course I don't understand the nuances of the game, but damn...

I clearly remember a lot of bench clearing fights back in the old days.
While rare, this wasn't anything spectacular.....
I've been a hockey fan since the '50s too and I have to say that I way prefer a fight free game. OTOH - A coach can not allow the other team's big guys beat up on his skill players - Who are usually the smaller, faster guys. Hence fights are sometimes absolutely necessary. Yesterday's were not.

I went to a lot of Philadelphia Flyers and the old Eastern league Jersey Devils in the early 70's. This kind of thing was a weekly event.

What no one has ever seen the 87 Olympics USSR vs Canada fight? The bench clearing 10 min may lay where the light in the stadium had to be turned off in order to stop the fight

EHL Jersey Devils were the first hockey games I ever saw. Our Gal Sally, Chief Halftown, and Happy the Clown made regular appearances at the Cherry Hill Arena.

Gordie is 85 and not it the best of health, but if you said anything against Colleen, I bet he would punch you today (and it will still hurt). I have no opinion as to what she did in Houston, but if you ask Mr. Hockey he will tell you Mrs. Hockey was the brains of the operation.... Right or wrong nice to see that kind of devotion.

And the Boston boys had no problem going into the stands to put out a few lights.

I think I read that this game/fight? resulted in 142 penalty minutes!
Back in 2008 RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) vs Canisius College (Buffalo) had an epic on ice 3rd period brawl that included the goalies. When the dust settled 251 penalty minutes were distributed.
I was at mid-ice on the glass and had a fight 2 feet away. I was trying to see around that fight to see the other fights around the rink. It was crazy!
