Default Jack Daniels 'Sinatra'

Has anyone tried this new 'Blackjack' variant? It's pricey enough; I've seen $165-$200. Is it special or just the 90 proof Jack I used to drink 25 years ago? Thanks.

I've never understood America's love for Jack Daniels?

It's one of those that I won't drink, even when the other guys buying.

For that kind of money I hope it ain't anything like the stuff you drank 25 years ago. Makes my mouth hurt....

Jack Daniels is what we let the tourists drink down here in Tennessee. We keep all the George Dickel for ourselves.

Smoother. The whisky is made for those that prefer it neat. No chaser needed. If you want to pollute it with Coke go buy Jack Daniels.

If you can find Dickel's Barrel Select try it. It's 12 years old and reasonably priced but hard to find. They only make 3000 or 4000 bottles of it a year.

George Dickel is one I have not tried yet - no particular reason, just never got around to it. My drink of choice is Jack Daniels Single Barrel and I do also drink the regular black Old #7 and Gentleman Jack as well. While I favor the Single Barrel Jack, I also like Blanton's and Woodford's Reserve but will try the Dickel one day soon. Completely a mater of individual taste. A few of my friends drink Tequila which I think tastes like lighter fluid - so as they say..........to each his own.

Sorry Tennessee, but Kentucky makes the spirits I desire to quaff. Bourbon. Wild Turkey 101, Evan Williams, Bookers, Beam Black, Maker's Mark and more!

I'm not much of a drinker but when I do drink its Jack Daniels neat. If this "George Dickel" you mention is really so great, then I will try to find some to try. But I doubt that I would ever pay $200 a bottle for any spirits.

George Dickel #12 90 proof is my evryday all the time sippin' Whisky. It is meant to be drunk neat or straight however you want to say it. This is not quite the same as your Kentucky bourbons. This is sour
mash whisky. I prefer to call it a highly refined moonshine. You need to sip it out of a coffee cup or bar glass to really enjoy the flavors and aroma. I strongly suggest not to slug it down from a shot glass because after about 3 of those you be on the floor wondering what happened. Lastly down here a 1/2 gal jug of #12 runs between $35 to $40 depending where you get it. Cheaper than JD and a darn site better for my money.

How about JD Honey? I recently tried it and I really like it. Of course with a Japanese company buying JD, we'll probably have JD Sake too.

I may be wrong, not an expert by any measure, but Blantons is bourbon and Jack D is whiskey, right?
Apples and oranges
And, Blantons is one of the best Bourbons I ever tasted

Bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon. Most bourbons are made with sour mash. The distiller calls it set back. part of the mash from the previous batch is held back and used to start the new batch. Not sure about other whisky but the bourbon I watch being made is double distilled or doubled this is to increase the alcohol. And to be called bourbon it must be made of at least 51% corn. this rest is amounts of wheat or rye and barley and yeast and filtered limestone water, and must be aged in new white oak charred barrels, and aged for a set amount of time (I think 4 years). Bourbon is the only spirit that federal laws sets the requirement for it's manufacture. Jack Daniels is owned my a major distillery conglomerate. It's the same one that owns Elijah Craig, Evan Williams.

Now I am going to have to try to find some George Dickal. tried Jack found it to be sweet even when drank neat.

I think I also heard that bourbon is only made in Kentucky by definition, is that correct?

In Scotland they call a good Single Malt, "whiskey". My preference is Lagavulin, 16 year old single malt.

Should be about $35 to $45 dollars for a 750 ml. This is what I recommend. I'm chasing the chill with some now. It's only available in some states. Click on specifics to find out which ones.

Ok, so like I said, I went out and bought a bottle of the Dickel #12 today. I had some just before dinner and yes it's very very good. Actually a bit smoother than Jack, but I am so use to the Jack flavor (which I happen to love) and don't know if I'd say it's better than Jack. Smoother yes, better....... I'll have to test it a bit more. Weather or not it's better than Jack is up to the individual and while some what close to Jack in flavor, it's a bit sweeter to me as well. Definitely in my rotation of Sour Mashes and Bourbons now. Glad I read this thread!

kaaskop49:

Since I consider myself a Jack Aficionado I will take a shot and guess that the Sinatra is pretty much just a re-bottled version of the Single Barrel that hasn't quite reached the 94 proof mark yet. Since there are only truly only 3 versions of Jack, the Black Old #7 which is the standard, Gentleman Jack which is really the Old #7 that has been charcoal mellowed a second time for extra smoothness, and my personal favorite the Single Barrel version which is 94 proof. The green label Jack I won't even get into as it's just a lower grade of the black Old #7. All the other commemoratives, special editions, etc. are in "special and fancy" bottles, have honey or other stuff added, or are in-between the 3 standard versions. Some might actually be better than their highest version the Single Barrel, or if not better, just a little different taste and I guess they come up with a way to market it.

Well anyway that's my take on this - for what it's worth.

The Dickel #12 is very good too!

Regards,
Chief38

OK, so like I said two weeks ago I bought a bottle of George Dickel #12 at the suggestion of some here. After two weeks of tasting and comparing I've come to the conclusion that while I truly enjoy the Dickel and think it's fine Sour Mash Whisky, I find that it lacks "depth" and "follow through". I also think it's slightly sweeter than Jack is but that is a personal thing as well.

I guess the fact that I've been a Jack man for 42 years makes me a bit partial, but I really like the Jack better. That said, if I am at a party, or BBQ and they don't have Jack on hand I would be very happy to get the Dickel and it won't get wasted either!

I love trying new Sour Mashes and Bourbons and if anybody likes an exceptional Bourbon you have got to try Woodfords Reserve - EXCELLENT!

Regards,
Chief38

After reading the comments here I too went out and bought a bottle of Dickel #12. A bit stronger and sweeter than Jack Daniels and while certainly a nice drink, it will not replace Jack Daniels as my favorite.

Was at the likker store yesterday and noticed a proliferation of honey bourbons. What's up with that???
My kick now is Rye. Bought a bottle of Jim Beam rye last night and it's pretty tasty. I do like the wild turkey rye a little better.
