Default Cleaning guns with my son. Thought they were rusting.

I pulled out my nickel 29-2 yesterday just to take a gander at it. To my surprise, there were a few orange dots on the rear sight blade. Assuming it was rust, I worried about the condition of my other guns.

I had told my son that I would compensate him for helping me clean and oil my guns. We just never got around to doing it. Seeing the spots on my 29-2 was the motivation that I needed. I recruited my son and the two of us spent 6 hours cleaning and lubricating my S&Ws. We coated the exterior with Break Free Collector and ran a mop with CLP down the barrel. I almost hated to "grease" up my guns because they looked so nice, but it was for the good.

I kept waiting for the unpleasant surprise. Rust, pitting, etc. I was thrilled to find that all of the barrels were super clean. No rust. Those few spots on my 29-2 sight blade was all I found (it cleaned up fine).

Up until the last couple of guns, we were having a good time (we were getting tired towards the end). It was neat to pull the guns out and admire them. I gave my son a bit of an education so that he knows about them when my memory gets worse.

Now, I have one less thing to worry about. You ever do this?

Lightbulb

I keep mine dusted down with BARRICADE using a old style shaving brush kept in a plastic container just for the purpose. Also have the same operation for dies and presses, but a different brush.

Is that something that you just brush on? Sounds easy if you have the right brush.

Cleaning the guns gave me a chance to closely examine guns that I had pretty much bought and stuck in the safe. I was very pleased with the condition of them. It was also a great way to spend time with my son. I figured he'd burn out before we finished, but he hung in there. By the time we finished, we were getting pretty good at it.

Yes indeed. Used to be called "SHEATH" by Beechwood Casey -- Give a small squirt into the brush and dust them down. Will get into all the nooks and crannies. Used a small paint brush when in the Marines some 50 years ago, but found out the shaving brush works better. I understand these days there is a KIT sold with the same style brush, but smaller for around 20 bucks. you want REAL boars bristles, not the nylon junk.
