Default Medicare and Social Security

I signed up for Medicare on line then made an appointment with SS office January 21, 2014. I filed to start my SS in March 2014 when I turn 65 and will have Medicare taken from my SS checks that I will start getting in April 2014. I was advised that 2 months taken since check is month after my birth month OK so far ?
Friday I get a bill from Medicare for 3 months, March, April and May due by February 25th 2014. I called Medicare and told the lady I had signed up for SS with Medicare to be deducted from my checks. She totd me they had no record that SS does not tell them I had signed up. Call SS office and was advised that SS will not update computers until March 7th and she did not know how Medicare handles payments.
I called Medicare back and was advised if I did not make the 3 month payment by Feb 25th I would be delinquent and would not have any Medicare coverage.
I asked if I would get refund for the extra payments after SS updates computers and I was told I would have to ask for refund and it would take up to 6 months for this to happen.

I started SS at 62, Medicare on Dec 1, 2012 when I turned 65. It was a "seamless" process all done by computer without having to talk to a single Government servant .

As stated above:

I began taking Social Security at age 62, followed by Medicare at 65. Never encountered any problems since (3 years), deduction from my check for Medicare was automatic.

Who knows, maybe something has changed in the last 3 years.

it seems that starting SS at 62 makes it easier to sign up for medicare...that is how I did it and had no problems...I am now happy being in the "ENTITLEMENT" program that I have paid for my whole working life...I feel a RANT coming on I better quit....

Default Medicare anD Social Security

Toyman, are you planning a visit to your nearest Social Security office ASAP to have these problems corrected? Thank goodness, a face-to-face meeting still works the best in these situations. I am not aware of any situations in which Medicare recipients do not have their Medicare premiums deducted from their monthly Social Security checks.

My own situation was exactly like Engineer1911 and labworm. I went on line and filed for SS benefits at age 62. Three years later and 90 days before my 65th birthday I received my Medicare card in the mail. Trusting no one (you understand), I called Medicare and confirmed that everything was on course. The rep said that no additional tasks were required by me, which was correct. My monthly Medicare premiums are deducted from my Social Security benefits. I know that this scenario is not the same as yours, but maybe it will help other forum members.

The Medicare number that I used is 1-800-633-4227, from my Medicare card.

Your comments and situation sure confirm for me that "Murphy's Law" has not been repealed, yet.

I was talking with a friend tonight and neither of us have had any problem with SS or Medicare. I DON'T expect that to be the case from here on out.

You guys who signed up at 62 already had SS going in so easy to start deductions. I am the other way trying to both at same time and the right and left hand will not communicate until after March 7th.

Sounds like they are very efficient at getting into your pockets and using your money. Good luck on ever getting a refund once they have your money.

Same here. I had no contact whatsoever with a real person when I signed up for Medicare. That's a good thing, believe me. After I had been on a while I changed my secondary insurance and I thought all was well. It took me over six months to get all the billing mistakes straightened out and talked to some real incompetent people at Medicare. One was dumb beyond belief and I could see why they had screwed up my account.

My medicare's due to start on November 2014. I called them and they said I'm all set and there's nothing else I need to do.
We'll see.

You WILL receive a refund; however, it may take as long as six months for it to happen. You will probably receive your refund as a direct deposit and THEN get a letter explaining what it is for.

I did not do anything "On Line", but just went to the SS office and they did all the paperwork and everything was smooth as silk. A few years later my wife files "On line", and never goes to the SS Office, and it was near the same as you experienced. Numerous correspondence back and forth, we did have to pay the premiums, as she was filing for Medicare but not getting her benefits until age 66 which was the then max age to file for full benefits. To this day I can't look anything up on line for her as she put in some "security code" and now can't remember what it was.

I thought I was helping pay the cost of it.. I guess until we can keep the hands out of the pot then none of these programs will ever work.
