Was George "Gabby" Hayes an imposter all along?

Movie historian Ari Peristalsis thinks so. He claims to have discovered that George Hayes's birth records (7 May, 1885, in Stannards, New York) were falsified many years later.

By extensive detective work, Peristalsis says he has learned that Gabby Hayes, the legendary sidekick/comic relief character actor, was born female in Cleveland, Tennessee, in 1884. In his book Who Knew? he alleges that the woman was born into a family with unusually abundant facial hair, even on the female side, and decided to try her hand as a bit player in western movies. Her first roles were so well received that she went on to fame and considerable wealth playing a grizzled old prospector type.

So the next time you watch a John Wayne or Randolph Scott movie with the Gabby character, it just may be you are watching a bearded woman from Tennessee named April Foyle.

Dang. There's some things I'd just as soon not know about. Gabby rode with me quite a bit back in my younger days. No idea I was riding with a cross-dresser.

I hope nobody is researching Frog Millhouse and his nephew, Tadpole.

Well remember the words of Ranger Doug: "If this were a logical world, men would ride sidesaddle."

April 1; I'm sure. George Hayes was really a very astute businessman and real estate investor in Southern California. He made the money he earned as an actor work for him. He may have played a clown, but he was no fool.

April Foyle. Ha,Ha,Ha, now that is a good one. You got me for just a second.

I met Gabby Hayes in about 1963 and I had no trouble in knowing who he was at the time and he was certainly a friendly man.

He was also a distinguished-looking, well groomed man, completely different from his on-screen character.
