Dead Whale on the Beach in Seaside Oregon
If you've never been close to a Gray Whale, they're pretty impressive. This one washed up this morning, it's the second one I've been up close to. It measures almost 40 feet in length.
It's been dead for a couple days, it was first spotted floating near the south jetty at the mouth of the Columbia on Sunday (about ten miles north of us), and wound up here. The smell is pretty impressive, too!
My next door neighbor, Ryan, who's a friend and fellow gun enthusiast, works for the construction company who's going to get the job of disposing of it. It'll probably be buried. Back in the 70's, they made the mistake of thinking it would work to blow one up, and it had terrible results! It rained rotting whale carcass all over the crowd that was watching! It's on youtube, it's fun to watch.

I love the story about the woman who called the Oregon Dept of Fish and Game and complained that a dead whale had washed up on her beach. The agent on the phone asked if it was a private beach. The woman assured him it was. He the answered " Private beach makes it a private whale. Its all yours." LOL Bet that didn't help out the BBQs for a while.

Actually, that might have been California. All 362 miles of coastline here is open to the public. If that did happen here, then she got what she deserved for calling her beach private!

We had a dead whale on the beach near us a few yeas ago, they came down with a back hoe and dug a deep hole and pushed it in, every cat within 10 miles was here.

When they come to the surface and "Blow" and you happen to be down wind it is not a pleasant "Aroma"...........
Washed up on the beach has to really be BAD !!
Good luck with that....................

All of the Great Lakes beaches in Michigan are open to the public to the high water mark. When I lived in the US Virgin Islands it was the same way. I was under the impression that all US territory fell under that rule. Apparently not.
