Default Arizona members! Hows Flagstaff?

Hey Arizona friends,

I have a job opportunity in Flagstaff and they are chomping at the bit to get me it seems. I go down on the 28th for an interview, and I will be driving around and checking things out while I'm down there. But how is Flagstaff? What can you tell me? What should I know? I really want to get out of Utah and Flagstaff seems like the best opportunity for me and my small family to make a fresh start.

I don't live there so I'll let others tell you about it from a resident perspective. But I've visited there and just south of there in Sedona and it's BEAUTIFUL! I would live there if I had a job opportunity. Purely from the perspective of a visitor.

I lived at Grand Canyon for almost 10 years. Flagstaff was our destination on our days off to recreate and buy supplies. Lots to do in that nice college town (Northern Arizona University) with lots of coffee shops, breweries, good restaurants, and the Lowell Observatory for diversions. The San Francisco Peaks are on the edge of town, and there's good skiing at Snow Bowl. In addition to the Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki National Monuments, along with Walnut Canyon and Sonoma are just down the road. The Four Corners is within easy driving distance. Want to get away for a little winter warmth? Head down off the plateau to Prescott. The college brings in a lot of cultural activities, and I think it would be a good place to raise a family. Not sure about the real estate market, but I expect it might be a little pricey. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent there. I think you'd like it. I'm sure you will find it very different from UT.

Expensive, and full of liberals.
Prescott Valley is a much better area, plus you're 10 minutes from Gunsite.

I lived there for awhile about fifteen years ago. Beautiful area. Biggest negative is housing prices. But if you're an outdoors type, it's close to lots of great places and has the closest thing to four seasons you'll get in Arizona. Limited job opportunities, and tend to be low-paying, given the cost of living. College/hippie town. Liquor and weed are popular, with the attendant problems, but not a lot of serious crime. Current residents can probably give you a better rundown. Don't know what the current water situation is, but they are rationing in Williams, just down the road a bit.

I live down the hill in the valley, and only visit Flag occasionally. It seems like a quiet town with lots of libs trolling around the college areas. Not much violent crime reported up there. Probably the closest to 4 seasons you'll find in AZ, and it's close to many state attractions like the Grand Canyon and Sedona, etc..

Very nice town I like to visit there. As already reported it is loaded with liberals.
I also expect you'll find real estate there to be expensive. Like a lot of towns out west it attracts people who have money. That tends to run up the price of real estate. That results in the wage structure not matching up with the real estate prices.

You guys crack me up. It's a college town, filled with young people. Of course it has a liberal flavor compared to the aging retirement communities further south. Unless AZ has changed its laws, it's still a community where you can open carry. It's been almost 15 years since I lived there, but I frequently observed open carry on the streets and in businesses. I remember there was a combo liquor and gun store in Flag called Ruff's Liquor and Guns. "Yeah, give me a 12 pack of Bud Light and a couple boxes of 125 gr. .357 to go." It ain't MA, that's for sure.

Wasn't Ruffs also a gas station?

My daughter lives there but, so does my ex-wife.................... Likely my favorite town in Arizona. Has gotten more liberal over the years but I think everywhere has. Still plenty of REAL cowboys and Indians there. Compared to Utah, it ain't Salt Lake. Nor is it St George. More between the two.
