Led Zeppelin gettig sued over Stairway to Heaven
Saw on the news the survivors of the founder of the band Spirit are suing the surviving members of Led Zeppelin for plagiarism. Seems they claim their song Taurus was what they got it from. I went on YouTube and listened to Taurus. Darned if it ain't the same tune as the beginning of Stairway. Even Missus Fan agreed.
Wonder if they will be successful.
I should join the lawsuit. I actually came up with the line "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, it's just a spring clean for the May Queen".
It was in one of my more creative periods, when I was about 6 years old.

Did any of you happen to see/hear the video of "Stairway to Heaven" sung by "Heart"? She sang it with Led Z in the audience and got a standing ovation by the group. It was pretty awesome.
Take your pick.

Spirit's full of road apples, in their song the notes are descending and in Stairway the notes are ascending. Totally different.
Heart's cover of "Stairway to Heaven" friggin' rocks.

Saw Heart do "Stairway" when the award ceremony ran on TV. It moved me to see the band's reactions, and tears from Plant. Wonderful.

Stairway to Heaven is one of my favorites,I have it on cassette and CD. I have a few Heart tapes and CDs also. Ann and Nancy did a great job on one of the best classic rock songs of all time. P&R Fan thanks for sharing.

I didn't much like "Led Z" in '71 and still don't. "Spirit"? Never heard of 'em. Let the old farts go at each other with their canes.

That you never heard of Spirit is a comment on you, not on them.

I guess it's a comment on me too...I have listened to and enjoyed Led Zeppelin for years, but until this thread I'd never heard of Spirit. I don't claim to be a rock music savant, but I did listen to a few bands over the years.

I hope this means radio stations will quit playing it. If you have to go to the bathroom Mr. DJ find another long song. No Freebird either for you Dixie DJs.

Zep has been accused of/sued for plagiarism numerous times over the years. Listening carefully to the scope of their recorded efforts, the band was quite generous in "borrowing" from other artists.
I believe there are several youtube "side-by-side" examples of Zep riffs/songs and the artists the band purported stole from. Interesting stuff.

I saw LZ perform that live in my youth. They did a better job with a lot less people. I miss the twin neck guitar. Years later I got a bit creeped out when I learned that they had purchased Alistair Crowleys castle to "connect with the spirits".

Led Zeppelin was pretty notorious for borrowing riffs and melodies. Led Zeppelins first US tour was opening for Spirit, so...
Over the years, the writer of the ripped off song was magnanimous about the whole thing. Interesting blog about it below. I guess now that he is gone, the family has decided to get him some recognition and some cash in their pocket.
Led Zeppelin: Plagiarism? ?Stairway to Heaven? | Turn Me On, Dead Man
I don't like Led Zeppelin for a number of reasons, including the fact they stole Dazed And Confused from another artist. Lots of artists pilfer music. It's really common. But Led Zeppelin became notorious for it. There's lots of information outs there on it, but they're such a popular band that it doesn't seem to mar their reputation.
I suppose it doesn't help that I absolutely despise classic rock. Ugh.

Yes it was, about 35 years before the century was over.
I gotta admit, that song is a classic.
All four hours of it.

Interesting thread. I was listening to an old Howard Stern show on Sirius today (don't judge me...), and he was interviewing an author/rock music historian that wrote a book on this very subject of LZ blatantly ripping off other song writers. They played side-by-side recordings, and there is no doubt they have directly plagiarized a bunch of people, and did not give writing credit/money to the original song writers. In the creative arts world, this is very bad form.
The author tied all but on of the songs from LZ1 to other artists, and LZ never credited any of them at the time. There have been subsequent lawsuits and awards. I still think LZ is a kick *** band, but I lost a lot of respect for them after hearing all of this. But hey, it's only rock and roll, and I like it...

I call our local classic rock station "The Led Zep station." 2 or 3 of the same dozen or so songs every hour whether you want it or not. :barf:
The final straw was, get this... Robert Plant was coming to San Diego so the programming director came up with the brilliant idea of "All Led Zep, ALL day long!"
He went alphabetical & I think I made it into the G or H before I couldn't take any more...

If i never hear "Stairway" again for the rest of my days i would be happy.
Same goes for "Freebird".
These songs just got way too much airplay for me.
Don't get me wrong I love BOTH groups and grew up listening to
them. But every time i hear either of these songs i just wish the DJ
would have played a different song like "The Rain Song"
or " Gimme Back My Bullets".

I graduated in 1969...and what we wanted for the last dance (in fact, the last few dances) at each school dance was something slow and romantic...to set the mood. Something that you could dance to while holding each other closely, barely moving, just enough so the chaperones wouldn't come tell you to move apart. I remember things like "Knights in White Satin", "Crimson and Clover", "Unchained Melody", "Blue Velvet", "Put your head on my shoulder", "Only the lonely", "When I fall in love", "Angel of the morning", and even older hits like "The Great Imposter", "Smoke Gets in your Eyes", "Teen Angel", "The House of the Rising Sun", and so many more that I can't recall right now. The doowop groups, the early Elvis songs, the Everly Brothers, and even some country songs like "Crazy" by Patsy Cline...and so on.
What a good time that was...

That's a very interesting position that you've got on this controversy. After listening to the recordings by the original artists (the original songs ripped off by LZ), I believe you've got a very, very good point. LZ's versions sounded much better! Still outright plagiarism though...

Not only did LZ steal that song, they joked about it for years whenever it was pointed out - and it was publicly mentioned, and jokingly acknowledged as stolen by LZ, hundreds of times. I'd first heard that, and LZ joking about it, back in the early 80's.

Like over 40 years. It was the theme of a prom I attended in '74. They had a stairway going into the clouds and everything.

Close but......
Close but no cigar. It's very similar, but it ain't the same. This is not nearly as blatant as George Harrison's ripoff of 'He's So Fine" to make his song "My Sweet Lord".

I liked many LZ songs, not all but one of the few heavy rock bands
that had some music I would listen to. I don't know if they copied
or not but jeese I think it's to late to be making charges now. LZ
music has been all over the place for forty years. What were they
waiting for? I say don't give them credit or a penny.
