getting tired of...
I understand i am of a different generation than a lot of the members here...and I also understand not everyone here has the opportunity for the level of education that I completed, but, we live in the age of the computer.
The era I was raised in, there was a lot of emphasis put on using the English language and CORRECT SPELLING. Now every computer I know of currently offers spell-check. Most all public access forums OFFER spell check in their "post new thread box" automatically...that's AUTOMATICALLY...the computer finds words that are misspelled as you TYPE them, it highlites the word, and even, in a lot of cases offers CORRECT spelling.
I humbly suggest that when you prepare a comment, you pay attention to this electronic marvel.
When I read comments here, and on other forums that I visit, my eyes slam shut at words, many common words, that are not spelled correctly.
Not to mention the run on paragraphs, mashed language used, and so on. As I write this, I can think of a number of active participants throughout this forum whose comments I will not read because it is an assault on my brain to try and figure out what said contributor is saying.
Maybe it's just me, perhaps I woke up today with a bug in my backside, but C'mon guys...I know from reading that most of you are well educated, familiar with the language in some real sense, somewhat computer savvy, but your writing would make one believe you did not make it past the fourth grade.
comments welcome...have at it

This forum is about an exchange of ideas. It is not a submission of writing homework to be graded and returned with comments.

What you think is bad spelling is actually an elaborate code that has been devised here. Apparently it works since you've mistaken it for poor grammar. You would be amazed at what's really being said in some of these posts.

My spellcheck doesn't like spellcheck. We all know where this thread is headed. Remember, you'll just get muddy and tired and the pigs like it.

Yeah, you missed a couple of caps in your message about poor grammar. Oops.
Computer (and smart phone) use promotes bad writing habits. I have a problem with fat fingers on the keyboard making typos. But you can't worry too much about it.
whats mor importent. the meaning or the grammr?

Nope did it on purpose...glad you picked it up...I tried to leave in the hilites for a misspelled word, but it wouldn't do that, so I went a little less subtle...
Catach22, nope, and nope...but I'm not crazy...my mother had me checked
Doug627...not grading, just observing and finally commenting...
bamabiker...HUH????
Jessie...thanks, I was not made aware of that but it appears to be a great possible explanation...
see, this is fun...for me

Did you do that on purpose?
We all make typos, and we all are capable of incorrect spelling, even with spell-check.
My pet peeves are incorrect usage of there, their, and they're; to, too, and two; and your and you're.
Have you heard the saying, "The most ironic statement ever seen on the internet: 'your an idiot.' ?"

It seems like someone of a different (presumably older) generation would remember being taught that crops are raised and children are reared. Furthermore, your superfluous use of ellipses is distracting. What words, thoughts, or ideas, pray tell, are you leaving out? (And don't try the "I did that on purpose" line again, either. )
I find poor grammar and punctuation minorly annoying in general, but I don't call folks out on it unless they are fellow grammar geeks (in private) or the meaning is unclear. I did point out the other day that someone misspelled "shemagh" because I couldn't figure out what a "shemag" was for a solid 2-3 minutes. (A female P-mag?)

Miss spelled words and bad grammar I can handle. It's the teeny bopper text shorthand that drives me nuts.
In my case, thank God for spell check!

I agree with this but what really gets to me is these short novels people write and not one paragraph.
Sentences that run on line after line with no comas or periods.
What's with colored letters? Can only read it if I highlight the post.

A few thoughts:
#1 As a now 12 year retired construction worker I was more concerned with accurate measurements than minor spelling errors. That put real good money in my pocket.
#2 My spell-check I use is thought Microsoft (Vista) and in plain English it leavers a lot to be desired!
#3 I never thought I would have to prepare something I write for friendly down to earth people like I would for a Thesis.
.
.
.
#4 I think I will keep to myself rather than sharing!

One more thing: Level of education has nothing to do with it. My little hick school in flyover country had an absolutely amazing English teacher. My best friend, a maintenance guy in a meat packing plant, can hold his own in just about any grammar discussion, and he hasn't had a day of college. Furthermore, grammar was not a subject in any Master's program of which I've been a part.

I agree with you...to a point.
I'm guessing most misspellings are a result of two things...typos combined with not being a touch typist, looking at the keys rather than the screen as we type and clicking "Submit" before proofing to catch those typos. I know I'm really REALLY bad about that. Depending on my mood I may or may not edit to correct those if I'm having a bad day and there are a LOT of them, but most times, IF what I wrote is easily understndable despite the mistakes, I let them go.
PS...Incidentally, a nit-picker would note your misuse of the ellipse. You misuse it exactly as I do. Used correctly, the word immediately following an ellipse is capitalized and a space follows the last dot in the ellipse... Like this. I like your way better...and actually do it that way myself.

Being able to understand a sentence full of improperly spelled words is a level of education most people achieve early in life

Well aint that a hoot. Another grammar nazi on an internet forum. Oh the stress caused me by peoples missed spelled words on an internet forum. What ever shale I do? I dont know if my life can go on knowing that there are so many misinformed misfits on the internet who cant or dont take the time to spell and punctuate properly. There must be more to life than correcting other peoples mis spelled words on an internet forum. I'm calling Al Gore he will take the internet down because it does nothing good it only promotes bad english and mis spelled words.

Typing on an ipad isn't the easiest or most efficient thing on the world. But it allows me to sit anywhere in or outside of the house and enjoy reading and sharing ideas.
I used to be like the OP...worried about every grammatical error I saw. But then i realized it just isn't worth it. If I can understand what the poster is saying, I simply don't care.
Now, in a work environment, totally different story. Must be professional. We have several millennials in communications roles, and it appalls me just how (ironically) pee-poor one of them can be when using the a English language. It drives me bonkers.

Are you not a collage perfesser?? My experience in writing breefs is to try to rite at no more than a third grade leval so the judges can understand it. using latin terms like rectumus flatulance instead of just saying fart tends to make them mad (or is it angry).
PLus these days you can graduate with a advanced degree in engeneering and NOT know how to use a slide ruler-whatsupwiththat!!!!!

I have always marveled at the level of knowledge about many subjects on this site....I'm 75, spent years as a Marine, and a cop of one jurisdiction or another. I managed to survive one shoot out, and a plane crash over the years.....As to education level I found the best spellers to be 60+ year old police Sergeant's who never graduated high school much less collage. They were always able to find a miss-spelled word in a two page police report written by hand, by much younger and better educated subordinates. Always amazed me how they knew..About the old times, have you ever read old time laws written by our forefathers, spelling not so good by our standards, however their penmanship is 500 time better than my granddaughter who is a straight A student....Funny about priorities isn't it??

I agree with this. I also agree that we should use the tools at our disposal (spellcheck), and that we should continually make every attempt to better ourselves.

While I agree that wading through mis-spelled posts can be annoying, you obviously have an option. If you choose not to read these posts, you risk missing the wisdom, humor and intelligence these posts contain, however poorly expressed. Your choice...

"a slide ruler"
Hey Caj,
I have one of those!
When I got it 52 years ago, I was a wannabe engineer. But I wound up with a degree in bean-counting.
And, yes, I still know how to use it. However, in today's world of computer spell-checkers and calculations to the ump-teenth decimal, it doesn't give the "right" answers.
Progress is great!

My comments &/or suggestions:
1) Try changing to your 'jammies before accessing the 'net as overly tight knickers prolly are causing your problem.
2) You prolly are confusing "lack of Give-A HOOT for lack of eddie-kashun"
3) In the future, please try to use line spacing between paragraphs, it makes it easier for a geezer's eyes to follow

I was an English major, and consequently found work as an editor/proofreader/tech writer. My eyes automatically search & destroy errors, even in published books -- can't help it -- but here's how I handle it 'socially': I reply, using the misspelled word incidentally, but spelled correctly, so the OP has a chance to see it, but without being called to task over it.
For example... a member recently saw that a question I posted concerned the 'escetics' of such-and-such. Later in the thread I had the chance to confirm that, indeed, I am interested in aesthetics, but it was a casual reference not offered as a corrective. If he sees it, maybe it will stick. Regardless, I knew what he meant. Some people are auditory learners, some visual. Spelling is a very visual thing.

Growing up in South Texas, living in Mexico, Spain, Andorra,Central and South America, southeast Asia and Australia, I can't say or write anything to anyone in any language without violating someones linguistic or grammatical guidelines.

I will admit that misspelling & improper word usage can hit a nerve with me, but not so much that I feel that I am the Forum arbiter & must correct everyone. I do my best to correct mistakes, but even spell checker isn't fool proof. When I'm unsure of spelling, I open Dictionary.com on another page & check the spelling. Also, as I said before on this Forum, I always proofread to insure that I said what I wanted to say & that there are no glaring errors. But, so many times I'll run across an older post of mine later on & see a mistake, even after proofreading. That bugs me, & I guess that I am just OCD enough that I will correct it.

The spelling or lack of doesn't bother me. What does is the lack of punctuation. The sentences run together and you have to stop and figure out where one ended and the new started!

As a rule, I don't get too wrapped around the axle on the few forums I visit. I might make comments to myself, but considering the number of times I have fat fingered or poorly proofread, rock throwing might damage my residence.
However, in professional settings, I can be ruthless. I have shamelessly mocked other lawyers in replying to their motions and briefing; rejected job applicants because of low skill levels in their written product (resumes, writing sample, cover letter), and sent probation violation reports back covered in red ink. Crummy police reports really bothered me, and I was always glad for ruthless Sergeants who insisted on quality paperwork. For a long time, one agency in this State used to drive me buggy because their reports were consistently of low quality. I won't name them, but they Wrote So Poorly.

I must say that the most annoying are those who write lengthy diatribes, mostly about themselves and their opinions, when they could've just gotten to the point and made a fool of themselves in one sentence.
(See how easy I just did it?)
