Are Bipods legal?
An older friend of mine said he thinks bipods are illegal but he wasn't totally sure. I'm from New Jersey and shoot at my indoor range every week no one has said anything to me about not using it. But haven't been to an out door range here yet. The range I intend to go to has FAQ. section on their site I'll ask them before I go. Does anyone know about this.

I can't imagine a bi-pod being illegal even in New Jersey.

Only if it is an "assault" bi-pod!
I can't imagine it but, in today's climate anything is possible. Check your state laws and see if the local gun shops are selling them. I have never seen or heard of a restriction on bi-pods.

If NJ has one of those crazy "assault weapon" laws, which I know they do, and if a bi-pod is one of the "military modifications" that are limited under that law, I suppose a bi-pod may be illegal if it is the modifications that puts you over the allowed number of modifications. IE: If you are allowed three military modifications, and you already have a collapsible stock, a flash hider, and a bayonet mount, then adding a bi-pod would be illegal.

Unless you paint it pink. Then you avoid the whole "bad black rifle" thing!

If it would be illegal anywhere, it would be in New Jersistan or Kommiefornia.

Please use the politically correct terminology. The bi-pods are undocumented residents.

Just make sure it's a "pre-ban" bi-pod. Those are grandfathered in.

I wouldn't have been surprised or shocked if they were illegal in New Jersey or New York etc. things are a little different there than here in Oklahoma.

I'm pretty sure it's legal my range which I'm a member of sells bipods, the same cheapy UTG that I have. Maybe I have just answered my own question. Just wondering why my older long time gun owner friend was telling me that and like I said he was not 100% percent sure. I'll ask sales guy at my range.

Bi-pods are not "legal" to use in NRA Hi Power competition. Also not allowed in regular "Palma" matches, but allowed in "F" class. Most "Tactical" and long range shoots allow them also. I use the Sinclair folding bi-pods, most of my friends use modified Harris brand. The Midway house brand looks like a Harris, but it is half the price for a very real reason! Ivan

What next, they will outlaw bipods. monopods, tripods and quad pods. Them they'll go after, shot sticks, walking sticks, and suspenders or three ting forks.

Well, all I know is, when they take away my own left forearm so I can't shoot my Henry Golden Boy a la Blondie in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, so I can save my partner in crime again, well, that's when I put my foot down!

The two legged bipods are legal in NJ. However, the anti-gun lobby was successful in getting the NRA to cave in and agree to support a ban on three legged bipods as long as tripods remained legal. The anti-gun lobby declared victory with the compromise.
Joking aside... some states have laws against a vertical foregrip. There are some vertical grip / bipods like the Grip Pod. So that might be something to consider.

A bi pod is legal but a verticle foregrip is illegal. Makes no sense. What about the VFG that has legs that spring out and become a bipod?. At what angle does an angled foregrip become a vertical foregrip? 90* ? Is 89* ok?

They are indeed illegal under very narrow, specific circumstances. A bipod attached to a pistol could have it's legs folded together, allowing the bipod to be used as a vertical fore-end hand grip. That is a regulated NFA feature - see
http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/fire...ical-fore-grip
Adding the ability to accept a bipod could increase the number of "nonsporting" features on an otherwise legal firearm. See
Firearms - Frequently Asked Questions - Firearms Technology | ATF

Bipods will only be legal when Lady Gaga makes a song about it to bring national attention to the discrimination against assault rifles that are "otherwise equipped"

He posted a pic of a rifle but talks about an indoor range. Im confused, who uses or would use a bipod at an indoor range? I we admit my experience with indoor ranges is thankfully limited but the ones I have been to are like 25 yards. The longest I know of is 100yards and is a buried 4' corrugated steel pipe with a room on one end. Neither place would I use a rifle with or without a bipod.

It could certainly still be illegal under FEDERAL law. Being legal under New Jersey law would not help you in the event that you receive a visit from the BATFE.

Not for a rifle it wouldn't. Just so you know, NJ does not allow flash hiders, threaded barrels, bayonet lugs, retracting stocks, or grenade launchers.
This makes the NJ legal rifles no where near what is allowed by federal law under the foreign parts kits that was brought up earlier in another post.
