Was I wrong?
To think I found a good place to hang out online?
A recent thread made me sick to my stomach.
Shame on those reveling in the death of someone whose only mistake was being untrained.
I think a few in this community need a serious rethink of their moral values.
Please prove to me our forum is better than that.

Well, not knowing what you are talking about, I can only say in a general way that this forum is one of the more civil ones on the internet. It's very tightly moderated, which sometimes causes me some frustration, but then I only have to spend some time on some of the other forums and I realize that this forum is remarkably civil as a result.
If someone was indeed reveling in the demise of another human being, I'd hope it was only in jest concerning a human foible (like the Darwin Awards) and not a truly mean-spirited celebration of someone losing their life.

I'm not a fan of finding humor in the death of a person. We are better than that, I hope.

I don't think I read such a thread. Glad I missed it.
This forum is remarkably cordial. I like it here.

Not funny. And what saddens me is that so far I'm the only one who thinks so.
I'm going to give this a few days and see if I belong here any longer.
Of course no one will care if I go or not, the expectation of being able to stay is purely my own.

It would help a lot....
It would help a lot if you'd tell us what you are talking about so we can understand where you are coming from. In general, I would say that people here are very respectful of life and show concern when called for. We do, however, have a sense of humor. I hope you will find a reason to stay, but whatever your choice is, good luck.
One possibility would be to stay on the forum and garner knowledge, which is the main purpose here, and avoid topics that are offensive to you that are most probably placed in the lounge.

Maybe someone just needs to lighten up a little.
Some guy is gonna point at gun at his own head
for a "cool looking picture" to post online and an
accident happens you're going to get responses
like those seen.
I don't think anybody was reveling in his death,
just commenting on the stupidity that comes into play
from the human race from time to time.

But, by your home location, you seem to find cancer amusing.
Death by self induced stupidity or death by cancer. Why do you get to decide which is funny?
I'm just asking.

I have no idea where DCX is coming from or goin with this.
I have reveled in the death of a few in my life.
There are a few more I wish would pass on before they get a toe hold.
So there you go DCX----I don't care.
UNLESS you can give a little more information about what in the world is biting your rear end.
Blessings

I went back and read the thread. I really didn't see anything outrageous. Lots of references to Darwin and the gene pool, but nothing that was outright mean or ad hominem, more of a "don't try this at home" feel to the whole thing. There have been meaner comments directed at the unwarranted use of Dremel tools . . .

It seems to me that if anyone were mocking death and deserving of chastisement, it's the guy who puts a gun to his head for a "selfie", not those who comment on it afterwards.

I don't specifically know what thread the O.P. is referring to. I guess I missed it. Regardless, when I look at this forum as a whole I find it to be a comprehensive take on our passion of guns and well beyond.
The discussions here run the gambit of products, procedures, suggestions, life stories and lessons, antidotal humor, pleas for prayers or help and yes, even opinions. The knowledge here is remarkable and covers avast array of topics. The compassion of our members is second to none. I truly believe everyone here has a quick wit and warm heart.
To judge the entire forum on a few posts that you find morally questionable or somehow tasteless is, IMHO, a bit shortsighted. I guess if you feel that the benefits of the content here do not outweigh your personal feelings, then moving on would probably be your best option.

There is a Melanoma Center in Prescott Valley, AZ, so perhaps the reference has something to do with a professional association.
I can tell you that my wife had melanoma removed last year and there was nothing funny about it. (As far as they can tell they got all of it and it had not progressed deeply enough for there to be a concern that it had spread.)
That said, if I read a report of someone who used a tanning bed twice a day every day for five years dying of melanoma, I would be very likely to think that person deserved their fate and while I don't think I would "revel" in anyone's demise, in that case I very well might crack a joke or two.
In many cases, the use of humor can de a defense mechanism, and while in a case such as the surefire-selfie, making a joke in some cases could be a way of covering thoughts more along the lines of "good lord I hope I never make a mistake that stupid" and it does serve as a reminder of the importance of following all the rules of safe firearm handling all the time. It is easy to think you would never be so stupid but it is a very common human belief that because they have not experienced something in the past that it will not happen in the future. For example, you may have driven 8 million miles in your lifetime without a single accident, but that does not mean you won't get into an accident the next time you are on the road.

OK, a confession here. (It's good for the soul, right?)
On a news forum online, I saw the story about the young fellow in Mexico City who accidentally shot himself while taking a "selfie" with his gun pointed at himself.
Oh boy, says I. I can't wait to post this link on the S&W Forum. It seemed to have all of the elements that attract the curmudgeonly ire and humor of many of us here. Plus, I don't like the "selfies" craze.
Then I read a bit further and realized that the young man died as a result of his action -- that the pistol discharged and fatally wounded him in the head.
Suddenly, for me, it wasn't funny anymore.
I decided right there that I wouldn't post the link. It seemed disrespectful. I still think so.
At the same time, I wasn't surprised or shocked to see it discussed here, as many other gun-related things are, and I took no offense -- at least, no more than I usually do when I happen to disagree with someone's opinion here, which they are as free to express as I am.
As an aside, what I found funny about the story that I read was that the young fellow was described as a "21-year-old veterinarian." I guess the education requirements for animal doctors in Mexico are a bit different than they are here....

I've always found the best way to leave is to just go. Why all the drama and self righteousness? Just go if this isn't where you want to be. No need to alienate other members who don't measure up to your expectations, just log out and be done.

Personally I don't find the thread in question to be particularly disrespectful. I see it more as a warning against foolish behavior, similar to the taking of a "selfie" with a tiger. I certainly would not consider the posting of the thread as an indication of anything negative about this forum.
I really like this forum, and appreciate the monitoring to keep it civil. And I was banned for a month for making overtly political negative comments. Of course I was unhappy with losing access for a month, but by the rules of this forum I was guilty as charged. Overall I think this is really an excellent place to both learn and teach about firearm related issues, and to vent or discuss various aspects of life (and death) with a clearly above-average group of people.

The amount of stupid people and the fact that a lot of stupid people actions result in death are NOT funny. It's scary. Because they are everywhere and it's too easy to get involuntarily involved if such stupid person decides to do stupid things in public.
Stupidity - the one thing people can never control!
Next to mother nature...

I believe it was Will Rogers that once said, " I have never wished death on anyone, however, I have read a few obituaries with a certain amount of satisfaction".
It is my opinion that the young mans gene pool needs a little more chlorine in it. Did he deserve to die, that's not my call, a higher source made that call and I'm not about to argue with Him.

OK, I found and read the thread you are talking about. To be perfectly honest, I didn't think anyone was being callous or disrespectful. It's not like we know the man, his family, or that we are at his funeral disrupting the grief of his loved ones. The comments are, IMO, talking about the stupidity of his actions.
There are many dying in senseless and tragic ways in this world...little children starving to death, babies being tortured and killed by their parents, or homeless people dying alone and unloved, to name a few. I'll save my compassion and moral indignation for those horrific situations. I can't feel too much sympathy for a person who takes a picture with a potentially deadly animal and twirls a loaded gun, and then ends up shooting himself in the head. While I wish injury or death on no man, some people bring it on themselves...and as far as I am concerned, that's better than them killing someone else with their stupidity.

Hey-zooz-cristo and shades of Chesty Puller Private Joker!
You disparage the sunny state of Arizona by displaying you're from "Melanoma Valley" and wanna whine about poking fun at folks from the shallow end of the gene pool?

Just read the thread in question. There were quite a few insensitive comments. Please don't throw a blanket indictment over all of us. I don't believe any of the posters meant anything malicious. I'm the happiest guy I know and make fun of my cancer but l never mean to demean or offend and I'm sure these good folks didn't either. If you must, take umbrage with those that ired you, not the entire collective. I, for one, hope you stay.

Very good point. What does he want, us to beg him to stay? Frankly I couldn't care less what he decides and would forget all about this episode in a matter of days.

It is human for folks to project their own fears regarding some situation on others, and to use "jesting" to quiet their concerns for themselves. In general, folks tend to dodge taking responsibility for their own thoughts and actions in life, and a "forum" such as this facilitates this trend. I would suspect that some of the posters would not address these situations in the same way in person ,the way that they do on here, hence the need for oversight by monitors, etc. As supposed proponents of gun safety, it has often been curious to me regarding the responses that come to the surface when someone has a gun related accident or tragedy. An example of this phenomenon was an accidental discharge posted here a while back. There were a bunch of posters that got all over this unfortunate individual, calling him all kinds of names, etc, etc. However, there were a few that, having had the experience, opined that if one handles and fires firearms enough, that the odds climb in favor of a situation like this occurring on their watch. Many denied that this could ever happen to them. That's the voice of fear. JMHO.

Since you asked... Yes, I think you got it wrong.
Pointing a gun at your head for a selfie and pressing the wrong button is worthy of criticism and ridicule at such ridiculous and dangerous behavior.
If you want to judge the charachter displayed here about a man passing, look at the Brady thread. In the gun community, few names are more despised than Brady. I haven't seen anyone dancing on his grave and "reveling" in his death.

LOL... if you think that this forum was insensitive, you sure wouldn't want to go to the gun forum I primarily frequent. This place is the most PC forum that I go to I think.

My chess forum
My chess forum is more cruel than this place ever thought about being. But then, there are a lot of trolls there......hmmmm
How many rules this guy break?
The gun should be checked and cleared unless you are handing it loaded for to somebody to shoot.
Always assume that a gun is loaded.
Don't aim at anything you wouldn't want to hit.
Don't put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot.

Well, I love everybody, and believe that we are all God's children.....but if you go and point a gun at your head, and something bad happens, you can expect to be made fun of, and not just here. Training? phooey, he pointed a gun at his head, he knew what comes out of that end. I'm sure that at least thousands of people die every day, and countless others injured and maimed. Joking about someone you've never heard of, doing something ridiculous, doesn't mean you wouldn't render aid if it happened in front of you. Be careful, the best people to make fun of are "sensitive" people.
He died, so what? We all die. There's still over 7 billion of us left, and that's way too many.

DCX I started not to get in on this because I never cared to "pile on".....in football or on the internet. But I would like to say a couple of things here that have not been expressed. I've only been around here for a couple of years and that's a year less than you. Still, it didn't take me long to realize that this is the VERY BEST website I've encountered in my 16 years on the internet
We don't know each other so it's hard for me to tell by your comments if you are just overly sensitive, inexperienced on the internet or just self righteous.
But if you can not recognize, acknowledge and appreciate the humor, wisdom, compassion, camaraderie and mutual respect and affection that lives here you are indeed in the wrong place. I have never seen the likes of it and what ever is in 2nd place is not even close.
If you choose to stay then I suggest you lighten up and allow us all to be individuals and have differing opinions, feelings, and ways of expressing ourselves than you. If something bothers you then simply let it go and focus on those topics and posts that you are more comfortable with.
If you choose to leave then please, do it with out whining. It serves no purpose and you just embarrass yourself.

"Our forum is nicer than their forum.." "We were nicer in our comments toward this guy or that person..." and all such comments are rationalization and justification for acting badly, and reinforce the self centered fear that is at the core of laughing at the death of another breathing creature. If it would be funny if it was one of yours, then you need some help, in my view, whoever you might be. A little roll reversal is all that is required to see how it feels for his family and friends to have him regarded this way on the internet. What goes around, comes around.

AFP, this is the second time in this thread where you stated our reactions to someone else's world class stupidity are based on fear. Let me make a few things clear.
1) I have absolutely NO fear that I will put a gun to my head and take a picture of it.
2) I have absolutely NO fear that I will pull out my Junior G-Man Psychologist badge that I got out of a cereal box and try to explain why people make fun of world class stupidity.
3) I made the first Darwin comment on that thread and I would do it again. I have absolutely NO fear that I posted it out of fear. Stupid is as stupid does and that amazing level of stupidity deserves to be called out for what it is.
4) To the OP, get over it. No one was reveling at a death. Calling a spade a spade (or an idiot an idiot) is valid.

I don't find it funny that guy shot himself in the head and died. I find it reckless and stupid. I didn't see too much evil revelry in that thread. I do find this forum to be the most civil of the forums I read. I have a lot of respect for the people here who write and those who moderate. I hope the O.P. lives up to his own standards and contributes to this forum and give this site the benifit of the doubt that we give him in his address. Need more pics.

That was the best reply I've seen so far, and probably sums it up for most of us.

Forget about why the story was posted and what comments were made. Why on earth would you go to and read a thread titled "how not to take a selfie"? You do know that you don't have to read them all?

My wife has malignant melanoma.
I use that location moniker as a warning, not for humor. Since it failed at that I'll change it, and I appreciate that being pointed out to me.

Man, what a headache I have.
BTW, DCX, lighten up a little. People are getting way too sensitive lately. To get through life with a little sanity, you have to just let some things roll off and concentrate on the important things.

I figured it was the James Brady thread. I was wrong. I didn't know, because I do not care for the Brady's, have nothing to add to a post about them, so I never opened or read the thread. I also do not care for the "selfie" trend, and never opened that thread either. See how that works?
