Default Orange Soda

What has happened to it? Not enough fizz! Funny after taste!
I recently got a hankering for it. We tried Sunkist, Fanta, Crush and Vess/Whistle. Are there any other brands that are better. All of the ones we have tried lately taste virtually the same, which ain't good.

Default Soda Ain't What It Used To Be.

For those of us old enough, we remember when soda companies used genuine sugar in their products. Today, it's sugar derived from corn sweeteners, beet sugars and anywhere else they may save a fraction of a cent per serving.

Those who remember CocaCola from the 1950s might recall that it had some substance to it, what the companies themselves described as "mouth-feel." Well, that mouth-feel is long gone. CocaCola, today, is like flavored water.

Today, I've learned to drink water. It is better for my waistline and the days are also long gone when I could burn up all the calories I consumed.

Beet sugar has actually been around for a while. It's only new to the mass market but a lot of stuff is made from it including road treatment for de icing. Molasses, alcohol, beer, honey like substance.

The local Wal Mart has Mexican Fanta orange in the cooler with the Mexican Coke. It's made with real sugar and I think it's pretty good.

Coke really rocked when they made it in a paper cup in the stainless cup holder using the syrup and selzer at the local drug store soda fountain in the mid to late 50's.

My point is most sodas just don't have the taste they once had.

You can't find a good orange soda? Try to find a root beer, birchbeer, or saspirella lately?

I find that the little trucks who do home delivery with the once wooden cases of soda have the best tasting sodas now.

I loved Fanta Orange as a kid. I haven't tasted it in years, though, so it might be totally different now. One of the differences in many soda products is that they used to use cane sugar, but now use high fructose corn syrup. Which doesn't taste as good and is not good for you.

Jarritos, the Mexican soda, has an orange that is darn good, although not as good as my favorite, tamarindo.

Spring Grove, a small bottler from the eponymous southeastern Minnesota town, also has a good orange soda.

I shifted from tamarindo to the toronja(grapefruit) it's got me all strung out. Jarritos, lo mejor!

I dont know if its a age thing or not. Back in the 40`s and early 50s I recall I couldnt hold a mouthful of coke very long as it seemed to sting. Maybe when we were young and tender we felt and tasted stuff different than we do when we got old. I heard many story's years ago of people actually getting addicted to coke a cola. I recall haveing to have it so bad in 1960 while in the NPS and having disguise it to get our packer bring it to our camp with his mules! I also recall working in the tetons in 1961 and a tourist trap would raise the price like a nickle a day as the tourist season started in full swing. I paid big money relatively speaking than I ever would today. I really suspect its a huge national secret that if the truth was ever known coke had "coke" in it and would have to go bankrupt from law suites from people that got hooked on it many years ago. Just lately I have lost some weight and I think its because I started to back off all carbonated colas as I have been hearing that even diet colas with zero calories will keep you fat. I am starting to believe that was one of my problems as I have lost about 20 pounds in the last six months or so when I started backing off just that and not much more.

Well they do. Most people don't want sugar so it's substituted. Just like when people complained about GatorAid using fire retarded chemicals in their drinks so they are stopping that too.

You should see what makes white bread look nice and stay fresh. You'll never want to touch a hoagie roll again.

Mcdonalds just came out saying that they only use 15% meat in their burgers. The rest is filler bleached with amonia.

Personally I don't care what soda tasted like or taste like now. Don't drink it and if I had kids they wouldn't be drinking it either.

When I was a kid (born in 1937) Orange Crush came in a ribbed brown-glass bottle and wasn't a garish, artificial orange color. It was wonderful, far better than the Nehi of the time in my young opinion.

Beet sugar is no different from cane sugar. But sodas today are more likely to be formulated for younger tastes and people who don't remember when they tasted better because they were more expensively made.

I don't drink them except for good tonic water with lime or grapefruit juice, an occasional Schweppes ginger ale, or a very rare root beer float. I drink ice water all day and evening.

What disturbs me is the damn "energy drinks", loaded with caffeine, sugar, and heaven knows what, that can be bought all day by children. That kind of over-stimulation on a regular basis isn't good for a kid's developing nervous system, heart, or sleep patterns. Pretty scary, and parents who permit it regularly need to look at their decisions or lack thereof. I'm not making this up: numerous doctors have written or spoken about it, including a couple who have said it to me in person.

For those who listen to the "John Boy & Billy" radio program's "Jepordy" game, the winning answer to the 2nd most popular soft drink in the world was...

Fanta was also invented specifically to sell to nazi Germany. Due to import embargo a drink had to be made with local ingredients

The original Coca Cola contained Cocaine extract which was removed in the 1920's. That is where the Coca in its name comes from.

My memories of this go back to the 50's as well as a lot of other posters. At the end of the day it's always been about the "bottom line" for all the manufactures. Subtle cost cutting
steps to the recipe little by little over decades, and decades,
and this is what you wind up with.

Many of us age group minority, have nothing to do with their marketing strategy. The majority of their consumers
"can't miss what they never had". Their loss.

Ya know, I also read that the coke in coke was stopped earlier than my time too. Now I definetly know how much stronger it was when I was young. I dont particularly believe that one of the biggest if not biggest company in the world with unlimited money didnt have the money, means and power to bend the facts and records, bribes or whatever it took to make us think that. When I was a kid we would have contests to see who could hold coke in their mouth the longest. You couldnt go very long without spitting it out and I still well remember it. I dont believe everything I hear or read.

Maybe you just got a bad "batch"? I like Crush the best. I like it straight with ice or over a couple of scoops of Bluebell Homemade Vanilla. That sure goes down good on a hot muggy afternoon in SE Texas.

The original Minute Maid orange which was bottled by Coca cola was the best stuff. I lived off of this in college. Somewhere within the last 18 years or so ago Coke dropped this stuff and pushes the european based fanta garbage.

Speaking of sodas and Germany. I bought two (sadly) warm cans of Orage Soda froma vending machine when i was in Laboe. To me it tasted like orange drink or orange coolaid, and NOT--orange soda.

I haven't had orange soda in years, I was never much of a soda drinker anyway but we used to have an orange soda called Nugget, it might have been just a local thing, I'm not sure but it was good.

anyone else remember when you could go down to the corner grocery store and reach in the pop cooler that had the coldest water on earth and pick out whatever flavor you wanted?

Mostly preferred Pepsi myself, but Coke is always acceptable. My real favorite soft drink has always been Dr Pepper though. Really loved those Tru-Aides too when I was a kid. That was a long time ago.
The last several months, we have had Pepsi with sugar in several stores around these parts, including Walmart. Some Cokes with sugar have been there too, in the Spanish foods aisle. Now we are getting some Mt. Dew with sugar too, in glass bottles. It's hard to remember but there was a time everything had a better taste. I think the whole health issue was brought up as an excuse to use cheaper sweeteners anyhow.
It was fun once to walk into an old wooden floor store with a screen door and open that long cooler, and choosing a Pepsi, Coke, Nehi Grape, Nehi Orange, Upper Ten, Dr Pepper, Tru-Aide, even a Ginger Soda, among a few others. Yes, I am old. And thirsty. See you.

The Orange Crush in the brown bottle was the best! My family used
to make a home made ice cream with that in it. No electric maker for
us. We all took a turn at cranking the handle with my Dad finishing up
when it got real hard to turn. Mmmmmm Gooooood!!!!!!

I don't know why but being diabetic I drink Diet Coke. Yeah, it's awful, and I drink too much of it. One thing I've noticed is that if I'm hungry, like late for a meal, and drink Diet Coke, it makes me FAMISHED. This happens all the time. If I know I'm not going to be eating soon, I won't drink it, even though I usually take one in the car with me. This odd effect HAS to have more ramifications than just getting hungry. No telling what it does to your system.

If I know I'm not going to be eating soon, I won't drink it, even though I usually take one in the car with me. This odd effect HAS to have more ramifications than just getting hungry. No telling what it does to your system.

Sorry up front for the rant, but feel like speaking out about this stuff is important. I know people will be skeptical, but if you chose to look into what I'm about to write about, it really could make a difference in your lives. Just trying to raise awareness.

RWSmith, your experiences are spot on with what you can expect from this "diet" soda stuff. IMO, and based on what I've read from the medical community, the artificial sweetener (chemical) that is used in this stuff, Aspartame (other brand names are also used, like "Nutrasweet"), is poison. It has links to serious health issues (including strong ties to brain tumors and seizures), and ironically, it will make you gain weight! It has the same chemical compound found in wood alcohol, which the body is not able to metabolize.

Another sad part of this story is that the stuff is highly addictive. What a combination, poisonous to the body, and addictive! Ever wonder why all these people drinking diet sodas are so heavy? If the stuff worked so good, everyone would be thin. Having zero calories is one thing, impacting the brain in a way that makes you crave carbohydrates afterward does not result in weight loss! Look at Merril's post above, he cut back on diet sodas, and dropped 20 pounds. People buy into the marketing hype (lie) that it will help them lose weight; easy solution... NOT.

I encourage people to run away from these "diet" sodas (again, one of the greatest marketing terms ever!), and all the other foods where they are using this Aspartame poison. Read labels on foods, especially anything claiming "diet," "zero calorie," "low calorie," "fewer calories," and other similar label claims. My mother is diabetic and will drink naturally flavored seltzer water; zero calories, no chemical sweeteners.

Go on Amazon and buy the book "Sweet Deception" by Dr. Mercola, you'll definitely be better informed and have a better shot at a healthier life. You'll also learn how, and why, this stuff was able to be brought to market. Big business in this stuff...

I'd be more concerned about believing anything that Mercola wrote or said than I would about drinking diet soda.

That's all I'll say because I don't want to ruin a perfectly enjoyable thread about Orange Soda. Fanta Orange brings back some pleasant memories of my youth and my dad.

It's a long story, but I'll keep it short. He owned his own business. On Sunday's it was closed, but part of his morning ritual was to go there, feed the junk yard dog (literally), check to make sure nothing had been stolen, and then go to visit my grandmother. He was a dutiful son and as the oldest, he took care of her after she was widowed.

Which was the reason that I (and my sister) tagged along. He had a Coke machine (what that would be worth now) and it had Coke and Fanta in it. This was pre Tab, let alone Diet Coke. Glass bottles.

Every Sunday we'd each get one bottle whatever we wanted. I always chose Fanta Orange. I forget what my sister chose.

After my grandmother died in 1970, the routine changed. By now my sister was in college, but I still went with my father. Mostly to keep him company, but also for the Fanta!

Time did what time always does, it passes. I was off to college and by the time I got back, the Coke machine was gone. Even though I didn't work for my father I had keys and the alarm code an often the Sunday trips fell to me as he got older.

Being a dutiful son is learned behavior.

It's all gone now. Dad, the business, the Coke machine.

Everything but the memories.

I well remember that candy store cooler. My friend and I would buy the huge (for that time) 16oz bottles of RC Cola for the same price, 12 cents, as a 12oz Pepsi. Boy, did that stuff make us sick, but we kept buying it because it was larger.

Learned a trick from the NY Yankees of the 90s: simply add a few drops (not a teaspoon) of lemon juice to a bottle of cold water. Adds a little zip to the water, much more palatable.

For me it was a gas station, the water was so cold it could turn your hand blue and go numb. The pop was so cold and cost 7 cents or 9 cents if you wanted to take the bottle with you.

Yeah I used to collect all the bottles I could find so I could buy another drink of whatever flavor I was craving at the time.

I remember getting Coke out of the big red cooler that was chained to a utility pole for 6 cents in the 50's. Finding a dropped nickle left one hustling for a lost penny. Like Ferril said those 6 oz bottles were awesome, most would form ice when opened. They would literally bring tears to your eyes.

Todays Coke is in name only. But most all have found a way to market horse by products, bombard us with catchy tunes to drink theirs and we still buy the cruddy stuff.

Mtn Dew was a long time favorite of mine, I no longer buy it. Perhaps it is scientifically and DNA matched for todays gamers....

Dr. Pepper is still good but having been there when the world was young it too is not the same, Where is that slight hint of the prune juice flavoring?

And old fountain drinks were to die for. Pure syrup and carbonated water, it was fresh and was very tasty.

After working for many years in corporate America it may just be that there is nothing that can wash the foul brown taste from one's mouth....

Oh yeah, I remember collecting pop bottles and going to the corner gas station and trading them in for a "PeeWee" orange and some penny candy. The kids today don't know what they are missing. Of course, we played outside all day or till mom called us or the street lights came on.

How about Oreo cookies - not sure if its just me - but the creme filling doesn't live up to my childhood memories of it.

Few things do...

I miss the prune taste in Dr. Pepper too, and Mr. Pibb is a poor substitute even for the modern version. One more reason I rarely drink sodas.

I don't have to add anything to water. Louisville's recently was ranked the best tasting water of any major city. But I'll occasionally add a bit of lime juice just for the sheer unbridled hell of it. Have to live dangerously now and then.

I think that as the years go by our memory of what once was is not what it actually was.

Case in point.I remember this huge hill every kid around would sled on in the winter. The hill was packed all of the time and getting back to the top was a challenge dodging the sleds coming down.I shouldn't have to say that going back to visit after 50yrs the hill is nowhere as huge as I once thought. You also had to get a running start to get going downhill.

I guess that there were some things that tasted better just like there were items that were made better.I'll never know for sure because the only chance I get to go back that far is in my dreams.

Better than NYC water?? Whatever, I'd have to travel to Luhville to try it. As for Oreos, with me, it was Devil Dogs, until Drake's went under. In the 50's, they were packaged singly in wax paper and were always a little bit stale. That was one way to eat them, the other was very stale. Even better.

I think Drake's Bakeries, at least the brand, may be back, but I can do without Devil Dogs. There are other childish things in the stores that I can happily consume.

Default Artificial Sweeteners

Has anyone noticed that with the onset of the low fat, non-fat craze and artificial sweeteners, the nation got fatter instead of thinner? The reasons for that are highly complex and could fill a book.

For now, it is well-documented that the body cannot distinguish between real and artificial sweetener. Thus, upon ingesting either, it causes a release of insulin into the blood stream, which promotes fat storage. That is why consuming diet drinks makes you gain weight.

There's yet another nasty to deal with: The major food and beverage giants add patented chemicals to their products that serve as appetite stimulants and make you crave what you're eating and drinking. The deck is stacked against us.

In my opinion, all soft drinks don't taste the same as I remember them from my youth in the 60's. And I like others here mentioned, have switched to water or tea which is far healthier anyhow. However, I will have an A&W root beer occasionally or a root beer float.
