Default Interesting Day In The Neighborhood

We went down to the farm yesterday and got home about 4PM. When we pulled up to the stop sign, there were three city police cars, a fire trucks and a rescue vehicle on the street (thankfully we live on a dead end with three houses on each side). Two more police cars and another fire truck were arriving as we got home and they let us into our driveway. Later a detective showed up along with a county CSI unit. They all finally left around 8 last night. The woman across the street, one house down does some work through her church with homeless people and a couple of years ago, a homeless young woman with mental problems became convinced that our neighbor was her mother so she occasionally shows up wanting to "move back home." Normally she's easy to deal with as the police come and get her, she's put on a 72 hour hold while they get her back on her meds. Yesterday our neighbor found the young woman asleep in the hammock on their patio. When she asked her to leave, the girl went berserk, grabbed the charcoal lighter, doused the hammock and set it on fire. She then tried to spray our neighbor and set her on fire. The neighbor ran back inside to call 911 and the young woman came around to the front door sprayed it with charcoal lighter and set it on fire burning the door and about a foot of carpet. Fortunately the fire department got there about that time (they are 2 minutes away) and got the carpet put out. The police were talking to our neighbor about "attempted murder" charges so the girl can be institutionalized and get some real treatment instead being dumped back on the street.

Oh, we had done some target shooting at the farm and I was dragging guns out of the trunk, carrying them in the house. Needless to say, one of the officers was keeping an eye on me although I think he was surprised by my wife's hot pink bag for her M&P15-22.

Sad situation, but a good outcome. Glad no one was hurt or major property damage resulted.

I have to constantly make an effort to not leave things out that are hazardous. To have lighter fluid and a lighter out on your patio is just irresponsible.

I am not trying to take the fault away from the nut job, but don't leave things like that out.

I have a neighbor who keeps his axe out at his chopping block in his front yard 20 feet from a busy road, he has left a ladder fully extended and leaning precariously on a tree for months at a time. One time he left his circular saw plugged in balance on his roof, and went on vacation! If a kid or a nut job get hurt in his yard who is at fault?

Glad all is well, and it shows how you can be in peril in an instant. Ed
