Gun rugs
I recently saw mention of a surface condition on a gun attributed to the gun being stored in a gun rug. I have a lot of guns in my safe stored in gun rugs. The safe has a dehumidifier. Should I be concerned?

Probably not. But check and see if any of the linings of your rugs have any foam rubber in them, or any other surface that will attract and retain moisture. Since you have a dehumidifier as well I doubt if you have a problem. Clean, dry, and wiped down with oil/silicone/etc. protector should be good.

I always use gun rugs traveling to and from the range, but don't store guns in them in my dehumidified safes. Maybe I'm being overly cautious.
Perhaps if you leave them unzipped for better air circulation and moisture evaporation if you must store your guns in one. Personally, I'd ditch them before putting your guns in your safe.

Read the ad, made the call and went over for a look.
It's a gun I would describe as 'slick.'
That would be a WIN 61. It was laying on the dining room table on an open full length zipper case
The top side looked really good. High 90s.
I picked it up and looked at the other side.
It was rusted and pitted top to bottom.
It turned out that it was stored laying down in a natural sheep wool lined
case. It drew in water and rusted the gun.
Every day I want to cry some! Well, not everyday, but most certainly that day.

Depends on the rug.
Foam liners - bad.
I store all mine in the safe in Boyt top end rugs.
They breathe and are very high quality.

I am committed to the bore stores and my golden rod to slightly increase the interior temperature. Have not had a problem yet. Bill

I wouldn't be concerned at all. I just have a couple of folded back baby diapers in the bottom of my safe and have had no issues.

I suspect it depends upon where you live. Here in Arizona with our low humidity I've stored gun in rugs for years without any problems whatsoever.

I store guns in both foam cases and rugs. I always wipe them down with an oily rag before putting them away, have never had a rust problem.

I forgot to mention RIG grease - a light covering is primo insurance against rust.

All my handguns are in gun rugs of various brands. Never had any issue with rust. If you have issues with rust then you need to have them in a climate controlled area. I do not think gun rugs are the culprit. I suggest using an actual dehumidifier and not the ones you put in your safe. If you cannot then do your best to use whatever prevents rust on your firearms.
