Just a heads up: I was in a Pizza Uno last week and when I logged on to their free wifi it wouldn't let me log on to the Forum, using the reason: "weapons". Somebody else to avoid and to bombard their corporate website with complaints about neo-nazi restrictions on freedom of expression. Regards and hope everybody had a good turkey day, Bill S.

That's why you need your own server and VNC.

I just VNC over SSH into my server and open up a web browser.

I've yet to see a web filter that even recognizes what I'm looking at.

Why..I'd just take out my Mossberg Cruiser Persuader and shot that wi-fi thing off the ceiling in that place for actin stupid!! Just kidding...but I feel better..as I ride down to Pizza Hut instead.

That why I don't use their wifi (places like that). Also, they have no specific say as to what is allowed. It's all from the Internet provider. All UNO has to do is select parenting controls. Blocks everything that's not Dora the Explorer

My take:

Private business that offers free wifi can censor as they wish and alienate certain customers. It is their freedom to do so.

You as a consumer can spend your money where you wish. You can choose to not support these businesses. It is your freedom to do so.

Simple economics.

I know a small restaurant owner and computer literate does not appear anywhere on his resume. He contracts with a service provider who has a form of parental control in place to prevent the computers he has onsite for public use as well as anyone connected to his wifi from visiting whatever sites the service provider has on their prohibited list. I am not sure that he is aware of or necesarily cares what they block and very likely would rather have it too restrictve than the other way around. he may have other choices for providers of it may be part of the franchise agreement but he certainly has more important things in the running of a business than whether or not someone thinks his wifi should be wide open. Imagine the complaints and possible loss of business that could result if his business was featured in a news story where someone, especially kids, were surfing porn in full view of all his customers.
I dont recall this or other gun forums being blocked while there but if it was I have the option to finish my meal without surfing this site or switching off wifi and using cellular data.

Easier said than done down here at the tail end of everything:)

Florida is THE retirement spot for Greeks and Italians up north. A lot of them open restaurants down there. I never had a problem finding good pizza or pasta when I was going to college in So.Fla, and I grew up on Pepe's and Sally's.

I believe Pizza Uno is expressing themselves as allowed by law.

If you don't like their free wifi... don't use it.

If you don't like their pizza or service... don't eat there.

That's how I deal with these matters. Keeps my aggravation factor down... and I have enough real issues that set me off these days.

Ethnic does not always mean quality. That being said there is good to be found, it's always hit or miss.
Enough drift.
I like Mcwsky's take that not every owner is going to concern his self terribly about what is being value added for customer convenience. Suck it up, put away the iPad for half an hour, enjoy the meal and move on.

Or use it in such a way that it neither contravenes their putative policy, nor prevents you from going where you want.

I've NEVER seen a business with either a policy or filtering technology which prevents me from accessing MY server or anything accessible to it.

I've been doing that for years with no problems at all.

VNC VPN SSH. Am I the only one that's lost here?
  • VNC - An application for remote control of a computer by another computer over a network, including the internet.
  • VPN - Virtual Private Network, a means of privately communicating in real time over a public network. It creates an encrypted private "tunnel" over the public network (usually the internet) through which private data can be transmitted and received. There are IPSEC, PPTP, and SSL VPNs.
  • SSH - Secure Shell, a way to encrypt data passing over a public network.
