Quoting John Wayne can make you sound really smart
I'm watching Rooster Cogburn tonight, for maybe the 10th time. The Duke was so cool. Twice he uses the term "Lustrum". It means 5 years. I'm looking forward to using that one in conversation.
People will be so impressed.

If you haven't yet done so I recommend reading the novel "True Grit", on which the screenplay was based. It is readily apparent that every effort was made to follow the basic dialogue created by the author. Very enjoyable read.
My favorite John Wayne line: "Life is tough. It's tougher is you're stupid". Can't remember which flick that comes from, but I have used it with my kids and grandkids for years.

One of his I’ve borrowed form the movie McLintock: “Don’t say it’s a fine morning or I’ll shoot ya’.”

The Lovely Missus P&R Fan has a Bachelors degree in Psychology. (I'm her long term case study). I don't have a college degree. Figured after owning a business for 29 years I don't need one. Anyway, for a blonde she's pretty smart. I remarked to her we have been married for over 5 Lustrum. Had no idea what I was talkin' about.

It's attributed to Wayne's character in "Sands of Iwo Jima".
The similar "This life's HARD man, but it's HARDER if you're stupid! ", came from one of my favorite books and movies. "The Friends of Eddie Coyle".

I find myself using some of his quotes and sayings.
..."Tighter than Dicks hatband"...
"A cow's nothin' but a lot of trouble tied up in a leather bag."
In Red River, when young Matt says "the cows are gonna get away", he answers, "Wherever they go, they'll be on my land".
It would be nice to be able to say that!

I used his " you should find another line of work pilgrim, this one sure don't fit your pistol" line on a male nurse when I was in the hospital.

I feel pretty smart quoting Tom Waits when saying, "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me instead of a frontal lobotomy". But people just think that sounds stupid.

I think my favorite John Wayne movie was The Shootist.
"I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them."

The one that sticks out in my mind is the one made to Bruce Dern in "The Cowboys" Bruce Dern "Mister Anderson do you take me for a fool" John Wayne "I take you for the vermin ridden *******. that you are".

"The best place to be is behind Mississippi when he fires that thing" from "Eldorado".
My best friend is a lousy shot with anything that goes bang, but still loves to shoot.
I presented him with a Mossberg 500 with 18" barrel and pistol grip. On the left side was a piece of duct tape with MISSISSIPPI in wide black marker 3" high!
All of our friends get the joke, (that he can't hit the south end of a northbound jackass), he doesn't. It's his prized, most used shooter. That makes the joke even better.

A man deserves a second chance, but keep an eye on him.

This little exchange from The Shootist gave me a laugh: John Books: "Damn."
Mrs. Rogers: "John Bernard, you swear too much."
John Books: "Like hell I do."

Recently I was asked to watch over a friend's store and his two young female sales clerks while he and his wife went on vacation.
I told the girls about the time that John Wayne and other actors came to Gainesville Texas promoting the movie "Red River". John Wayne (dressed for the role with a Colt on his hip) walked down the east side of the court house in front of Shad and Pulte Hardware,. I was standing in awe with a bunch of other kids (I was 8). He walked up to me and drew back and took a swing at my head. I froze ! He pulled the punch like he does in the movies and barely touch my chin and laughed and said "How are you doing there kid?" "I told him fine since I was still alive".
After I told that story to the sales clerks they both look at me funny and said "Who is John Wayne?"
This world is going to the dogs in a hurry!!!!!!

I know where your coming from.If you read any of my posts on old and classic movies--you will know what I mean. Case in point--a year old neighbor of mine thinks that classic movies include: Fast and Furious, Batman, Spiderman and Predator.
He never heard of Errol Flynn,James Stewart, Paul Muni, Charles Laughton, Lon Cheney sr or jr, Alan hale Sr, James Whitmore Sr ,Gregory Peck, Randolph Scott, Richard Widmark, Spencer Tracy, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Clark Gable,Gary Cooper,Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, but actually has heard of John Wayne and Lee Marvin. However, he doesnt know what they look like?
Allmy life well before cable tv was a reality in my hometown I heard of all these and others like: Dane Clark, Robert Taylor, etc etc etc etc, knew what they looked like--but had never seen any of their films till we got cable. They were just never played. Partly because of that--John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Richard Widmark, James Stewart and such are my top favorites.
this neighbor has no clue--who Audie Murphy,Richard Burton, John Mills, and such are.

Yeah, I love this expression! "Bull" (I think the actor's name was spelled Hunnicutt) was a great character. I believe he was expressing some astonishment at the croton oil in "Mississippi's" hangover cure.

If I recall correctly, it was "Bull" who said this, also. He was explaining to the Dr. (who was patching Wayne's character, "Cole Thornton"), that "Thornton" had received his shotgun wounds from "Mississippi".
To me, the best (at least, the funniest) line in that movie is probably one that most people don't appreciate...and perhaps there was no humorous intent, and it's just my warped way of viewing the world. But, after "Thornton" and "J.P. Harrah" (Robert Mitchum) have been blasting bad guys in the old church, and one of the bad guys escapes the church to be shot at by "Mississippi", "Thornton" and "Harrah" are running toward the sound of the gunfire, when "Bull" comes into view running from another direction. "Thornton" asks, "Where'd you come from?", or something to that effect, and "Bull" replies, "I heard a noise!" That cracks me up! Really...you heard a "noise"? After 5 minutes of non-stop gunfire...you heard a "noise"? Hilarious!
One of my favorite quotes from a Wayne movie is this: "If you say three, mister, you'll never hear the man count ten." It's from "The Quiet Man", and oddly enough, Wayne's character is also named "Thornton", except Sean instead of Cole.

I often wonder if people really spoke like some of the "True Grit" characters in that era, or more like "Deadwood". I'm currently reading "The Man Who Would Not Be Washington", a biography of Robert E. Lee. Educated people certainly wrote that style of prose, but we all know, few people lace their correspondence or journals with expletives.

My favorite comic-like scene in El Dorado--was when they fed Robert Mitchum--that concoction to cure one from a drunken stupor. It was so three stooges like.
John Ford had several names he loved using in many movies: Some being York, Thornton etc. Its like Sam Fuller loved using the name: Lemchek--in many of his movies too. In Fullers case--Lemchek was the name of a friend of his who was killed in WWII.

Its disgusting aint it? I do try to convert the wicked ignorants and have won over a few in my time. Got a great friend in England who only liked watching Randolph Scott Westerns--till I got him into watching Dukes westerns too. His wife is peeved with me because he is now spending loads of money buying John Wayne movies.
