Default Barrett Jackson Auction

So Im watching the BJ auction this afternoon live from the land of AZ! Anyway this 71 or 72 Toyota FJ comes up on the block. It's all camoed out and nothing else is special about it that I can see? The camera scans to the large rear side widow and oh my there is a rifle rack hanging with two "toy" red tipped evil black rifles hanging there. N ow the one dilbert announcer has to make this intelligent statement, "Oh my I hope they're not active!" I just about fell off the couch laughing! The camera now scans to the roof rack and there is an ammo box strapped up there marked rifle grenades, he made no comment on that?
The land cruiser went for 40 grand,,,,, must have been the rifles and grenades that closed the deal!

I like to watch the aucions too but these commentators have entirely too much to say. I like to hear the auction and not some "personality" try to impress me with the sound of his voice.

I hate that guy, what's his name Spanky, I would like to give him a Spanky. I think he likes to hear himself.

Sometimes I can't figure where some of these prices are coming from and where the monies are coming from to pay them?
Must have done something wrong or I don't have enough debt?

I live about 5 minutes from where this auction is held. I quit going years ago when this "hobby" became a rich mans "I can spend more then you game." The prices have taken collectible cars out of reach for those of us with just middle class means.

Every time a Plymouth with a 3 two barrels was on the block those idiots called it a "Six Pack", even though on the scoop it plainly said "Six Barrel" or "6 Barrel". A Dodges was a "Six Pack", not Plymouth's. And these idiots are supposed to be car guys. Right! BJ's auctions have gotten worse than Mecum's!

Italiansport I understand there are deals to be had outside of their arena, is that true?
These prices being paid for some of these cars are crazy and they're not worth it!
Personally I would never pay 40 grand for no Toyoto!

Default Rip-Offs

The auction houses get a 10% seller's fee and a 10% buyer's fee.

They auction off a $10M Ferarri and make $2M on it. Not bad.

I went to the Mecum last year (it's here in town this week). Cars that you would think would bring big money went for 1/4 expected. Cars that were unremarkable (I remember a mid 90's Corvette that went for $6 figures) started bidding wars. It's entertainment same as gunshows. Folks truck in their cars and hope a fish bites. If not, there's always the next show. Joe

If you look at the Phoenix Craigslist car ads the week prior to the auction it's swollen with cars for sale usually at inflated prices. Once in a while a deal can be had but they are few and far between anymore. The Internet has made obtaining pricing information easy for just about everyone.**
For example in our collecting area: When was the last time you saw a S&W Model 28 offered for $200!
**One of the problems is many sellers want top dollar for a vehicle in less than top condition. They see the nosebleed prices paid a BJ or Mecum and think theirs is worth the same.
As an aside: I have no idea why Ron Pratte decided to dump his whole car collection at BJ this year. There is a lot of speculation about his reasoning but that's all there is to date. Just maybe he knows something that the rest of us don't know regarding the economy.
