Attn: San Diego & Los Angeles area members
What are the absolute "must see" places in these cities? I'm going to be out there for a few weeks later this year. I'm looking for essential family friendly things to do.
Thanks!!!
Charles

San Diego has a ton of things w/o the traffic snarls of Los Angeles. The world famous San Diego Zoo is a must for any family event. SeaWord can also be an enjoyable time and Lego Land is a short 20 miles north on I-5. Balboa Park has 50 museums and you can spend a week there and never see the same thing twice. The USS Midway aircraft carrier Naval Aviation museum is docked at the foot of Broadway, and if you like major league baseball, the San Diego Padres play at downtown Petco Park. Ed.

+1 on the Midway, if you like militaria you will really enjoy it. If the weather is good and you enjoy the water, taking a San Diego harbor cruise is a fun thing to do.

I was born and raised in Southern Cal. When in San Diego, be sure to visit the Naval Training Center. I visited once back in '67 and enjoyed it so much, I spent 13 weeks there!

Spent the first 50 years of my life in L.A. and Orange County.
San Diego:
San Diego Zoo
Natural History Museum, across the quad from the zoo
Stephen Birch Aquarium (Scripps Institute of Oceanography), La Jolla
The wooden wagon road, between San Diego and Yuma.
Los Angeles
L.A. Zoo
Gene Autry Cowboy Museum (across parking lot from zoo)
Griffith Park Observatory
Olvera Street and Mexican Church
Phillippe's French Dip (1 block north of Olvera street=home of the French dip sandwich)-gotta get a sandwich.
Hollywood Blve and Sunset Strip.
Magic Castle (if you can get in)
One of several missions
PicFair
Musso and Frank's for a meal

I was also there in early 1967. Left Georgia freezing, was in the 70's upon arrival. There was a huge glut of new squids, we had to mess around for almost a month before our 1-1 day, 17 weeks in boot.

Traffic in L.A. was bad enough when I was out there in 69-73, so I only went there a couple of times. San Diego has some decent stuff. The hotel Del Coronado is historic. The Point Loma lighthouse is cool and one of my favorites. The zoo and Balboa park is definite and also you may want to hit Old Town. Around here in our part of the world, the poinsettias are a foot tall and always in pots, if you can get one to live past Christmas, but I have a picture of some 8' tall ones growing in the ground out there. Expect the foliage to be just backwards from what you have at home when you head out. Everything turns green in the winter and brown in the summer because of the rainfall/lack thereof. Avoid Mexico.
I don't know if they are still there, but there used to be some beautiful flower farms between the interstate and the ocean in between SD and LA. Think of one of our states peanut farms but with row after row of different colored flowers. Larry

You have to take the bridge over to Coronado Island - 5 minutes away from San Diego. Home | Coronado Visitor Center
In San Diego walk the Gas Lamp District, Old Town and for a nightcap it the roof lounge, top of Marriott in the Gas Lamp District. It also overlooks the stadium.

If in S.D., don't miss spending some time with the big game at the Wild Animal Park. An easy drive from downtown.

If you happen to be there at the right time there's a Crossroads Gun Show in Del Mar which is just North of San Diego.
However; With California's laws I don't know what you can buy.
