Can we discuss Cherry Pie?
I know, its not gun related. Sorry about that. But it seems its my favorite flavor. And I guess I need to know if anyone has been to O'Charlie's restaurant on a "free pie Wednesday". The reason I ask is because I really hate false advertising. But the TV ads show a piece of cherry pie that is a full 3 cherries thick. No, not like the store bought or home made that is lucky to be one full cherry. The one on the TV shows a thickness of filling that is really 3 cherries deep.
I'd like to get my wife to bake me one like that, but I don't hold out much hope. We don't even have a pie pan that deep. I'm not certain it would cook right being that thick. Guess it'd be worth a try.
I know there are families that have their own receipes that sometime deviate from what most of the rest of the world tries. But it sure looks good on TV. And someplace I've got a photo from McDonalds that shows a big mac with the captions "we can't make anything remotely as good as this".
A little help would be appreciated. Or maybe just opinions.

Dick, you and I both know there is no other pie but cherry pie. I wouldn't care if it was one cherry, two cherry or whatever high, just as long as it's CHERRY pie. BTW, did I mention, I like cherry pie.

I don't know about the three-cherries deep thing. Beyond my pay-grade. Sorry. BUT... I do want to know who came up with this "American as Apple Pie" stuff? It should be "American as Cherry Pie!"
Unfortunately, I doubt you will find one of those pies - free or otherwise - in a hot-box restaurant.

Heresy! Strawberry-rhubarb>cherry>blueberry. Apple only when hot with vanilla ice cream. Must go raid the fridge now...

My wife puts some slivered almonds in cherry pie.
They bring out the cherry flavor, or compliment it.
I would tell you the rest of her secret recipe but then... :>)

Dry toast the almonds first for more flavor.
Also killer on chocolate ice cream.

Berg,
You should taste my wife's home made cherry pie! Her crust is to die for, with as many cherries inside as you want! I need to remind her it's about time to make another one!

Cherry is okay. I prefer Blackberry pies. I like the ones with a sort of latticework crust no top.

Dick,
I have seen the same commercial and wondered the same thing. Can their pie actually look like that? It even holds together after it is sliced. I would figure the cherries would run out all over the plate if it was that thick. Hopefully we will have someone post who has actually tried it.

My birthday was 2 weeks ago today and my wife baked me a cherry pie. It was very good. When I was in MP school at Fort Gordon back in 69, Sunday lunch was the highlight of the week. I would go to the PX for a meal of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and a piece of cherry pie.
I make a pretty good cherry or peach cobbler using a recipe from the Food Channel.

Pie
While any pie is better than no pie, nothing holds a candle to
real home made Mince meat pie, with crust made with lard.
In my neck of the woods there ain't no "cherries" and it's
hard to find women to scrape hogs heads. You can take 3 frozen
pie boxes over to county seat court and turn in for no fault
divorce.

Everyone knows only commies eat cherry pie. Of course it isn't 3 cherries deep, that is just one of the lies of communism. They don't say "American as mom's apple pie," for nothin'.

Why do people insist on ruining rhubarb pie by adding strawberries? Now that is heresy!
But there will never be any pie that can equal a properly made cherry pie.
And what is it with calling it a flavor of pie? Cherries are the main ingredient!

You must be an apple pie man, Mike. No, it isn't one of the Communists' lies. It is just ordinary capitalism at work. A good food (commercial) photographer who has been doing it a few years knows a LOT of tricks. Stacking up a 3-cherry high pie would be child's play for him. I once sat though a seminar at the old Winona School of Professional Photography. Mercifully, it was in the evening, right after dinner. I can't recall who the instructor was now, it may have been Gerhard Bakker, it's been a long time, but I do remember that you could "taste" a few of his pictures.

my fondest memories of cherry pie is when my mother would send my brother and I out to the back yard to get the filling...........he would climb in one cherry tree and I in the other and we would eat more than we picked and brought back into the kitchen. mom would then pit the cherries and put them in the pie crust she made from scratch and into the oven..........man, that was some great eatin....

You're just not trying hard enough. George Washington chopped down a cherry tree. George Washington led the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The army used guns. Cherry tree = Washington = Army = Guns.
You're welcome.

Try using a cast iron frypan to bake a pie in. They are deeper than pie pans and make a really lovely pie.

Brambleberry Pie
Brambleberry, any berry that grows on thorny canes or trailing vines, called bramble, raspberries, blackberries, marionberries, etc.
Brambleberry pie combines multiple berries, your choice, but the secret to any pie, single crust, two crust, lattice top crust, or even cobbler is the crust! And the secret to the best crust is lard!
And then fried pies for lunchboxes!

I like pie, any kind of pie, Cherry pie must be made from Michigan Cherries. My favorite pie is on a plate warm or cold, with home churned vanilla ice cream. Fruit of the forest pie a mix of black berries, raspberry, cherries and blue berries.

At one time you could buy a fried cherry pie at most convenience stores in a snack size. I don't recall who made and distributed them. Those were pretty good snacks.
However, if it is a regular home cooked pie, I will take strawberry or coconut every time.

I don't know about the fried thing but I have probably eaten about half-million of the little baked ones. "At one time" they weren't too bad. These days if you buy one you have to look carefully to find more than one or two cherries inside. They don't bear much resemblance to a cherry pie.
I am not a pie baker myself. Someday I may have to learn. If time permits, at lunchtime today I believe I will stop by the local pie shop and see what they have. As long as it doesn't have sugar sprinkled over the top of the crust, they will make a sale. (Covering the crust with sugar is just barbaric.) After a long Indiana winter a good cherry pie is just what is NEEDED!

I believe it was Hostess who did the little cherry pies you bought at convenience stores. I remember one lovely Spring morning in my jon boat ona small lake with one of those pies and a 16 ounce Bud for breakfast.
