Talking Anyone here had a stapedectomy?

Stapedectomy is a surgery to correct otosclerosis. I've been diagnosed with it and it's much worse in my left ear. Sounds like surgery is an option but I don't know if I should risk it yet. I am going to turn 39 this year and if it goes bad, that's a long time to live with the outcome which in rare cases can be total loss of hearing in that ear.

So I am wondering if any of you have had the surgery and would be willing to share your experience and the outcome?

Thanks!

If it's rare I really wouldn't worry about it.

But, that being said, I imagine it's much easier to live in our society deaf than blind.

I have a hard time spelling it but yep, I had one of those. Just picture doing surgery inside you ear..kinda like getting all the tools into a tiny soda straw..not a big old milkshake straw, but a little one. My doc had one hell of a steady hand. PM sent

It would be unimaginable to not be able to see but it is like nothing you have ever experienced to be deaf.
There is nothing funny about hearing loss at any stage. If you have any personal concerns please contact a doctor about it. Just think what it would be like not hearing birds in the spring, a big bass dancin cross the water, a goose in the fall or the slight wind in the trees on a cold winter night. But most of all not hearing you kids or grand kids.

I'm on my second set of hearing aids. These new ones, Phonak, (as supplied by the VA) are phenomenal. They are programmed to the individual and set at their middle setting. You have 5 levels below and 5 levels above this level that you can set them to by the push of a button. When I first got them, as I was leaving and i slid my arm into my jacket I could hear the rustle of the material in the coat and I had never heard that before (in many many years). The sound quality is outstanding. When I hear my wall clock chime i hear the actual reverberations of the bell. But when I go into a noisy restaurant, I can turn them down 1 or 2 settings and be very comfortable hearing conversation at my table but not being battered by the ambient noise and clatter around me. I just heard a Blue Jay in the tree outside, it is such a pleasure to go out in the country and walk around. (Just be sure to remove them when you put on your muff's to go shooting).

I've had the surgery twice, once in each ear. The second one when I was about your age. The second seemed to be slightly more successful than the first but both improved my hearing a great deal.
Go for it, I think you will be pleased with the difference in your hearing. Good luck!

My father was an ear doctor and did several..........(33 years)
just make sure you have a good, qualified doctor in that field
that has done hundreds of these operations with good results.

You don't need a first year green horn cutting away, at you.

Good luck.

I didn't catch it all either---best I could make out it is about a ringing and phone setting the ear--done with green glue and both ears are connected.

On a more honest and sincere level---I will pray.
Blessings
