Lee Marvin and Gary Cooper westerns.
I liked pretty much all Lee Marvin did, I loved him in Cat Ballou. Him and his horse leaning in the alley can always bring a laugh for me.
Gary Cooper, he was raised on a ranch and was horse savvy, his Mother was took him and his brother to England for 7 years. They returned to Coop's Dad's ranch in Montana where Coop worked thru the WW 1 years. His Dad came to america at 19, became a lawyer and then a high court justice, Montana? Coop had a much more worldly aspect he brought into acting.
His first big role was The Winning of Barbara Worth. Coop was 6' 3" tall and could ride. I am sure in that movie his Stetson was knocked off while riding, he bent from the saddle and picked it up. No easy feat, I tried it.
I liked all of his movies and even though it is slow compared to Eastwood's westerns I really liked High Noon.
What is your favorite movie and or scene for Lee Marvin and Gary Cooper?

Marvin, & Cooper, that's about as opposite a pair as you could come up with, at least movie-character wise.
For Lee Marvin, it was unquestionably "Cat Ballou", closely followed by "Paint Your Wagon." The scene of him being dumped from the stage as Nat King Cole & Stubby Kaye sing about the fastest gun makes my ribs ache with laughter. No one played a better drunk.
As a side note, Marvin served with the Marines in the Pacific and was wounded on Saipan.
For Cooper, it was "Sargent York".
I agree with Howard Hawks comments about the whiny Will Kane in "High Noon". That's not a knock on Cooper but the script. Any real western lawman worth his salt would've been waiting at the train station with his rifle & plugged the bad guys as they got off.

I have always like Lee Marvin but I had to take a pass on Cat Ballou. As a patriotic American Vietnam vet I can't stomach Hanoi Jane. But Marvin was outstanding in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Killers with Angie Dickenson, Ronal Regan and Clue Gullager, Donovan's Reef with the Duke, and of course the Dirty Dozen with it's stellar cast. Lee Marvin served in the Marine Corps and was the real deal.
My favorite Coop movies are High Noon and a close second was Sergent York. I didn't know all that about his personal life. Thanks for posting.

My favorite role for Gary Cooper is Cole Harden in The Westerner. The first half hour or so of that movie is great.

I agree with Sheepdawg on his selections. I also liked Lee Marvin in "Monte Walsh" and "The Professionals" with Burt Lancaster.

Jack I feel the same about her. However for me Lee played a great drunk that was funny. I just hope he was acting.
Hanoi Jane is now recanting her actions and saying she is an
American and patriotic. I don't know, after Hanoi she lived in France for quite some time. Not sure she knows where or who she is.

Monte Walsh for Lee Marvin. I know it was not him aboard that horse, but it was about the best "ride-down" I ever saw....Tore up right smart of the town !
I echo the opinions about Liberty Valance and Dirty Dozen.
I need to go back and watch Cat Ballou and Paint your wagon, they were both good.

I was concerned no one was going to mention Marvin in "The Professionals." Enjoyed the ambush scene with Marvin unloading the '97 shotgun. Liked his belt rig: 1911 on one hip, 1917 revolver on the other and the short sheath knife (also in "Liberty Valance") in the small of the back. Anyone notice how Marvin was reaching for that knife in the Lancaster-upside-down scene? IF ONLY he hadn't 'cowboyed' the cylinder shut in one scene; that was disappointing. An easy guy to work with, I understand, playing cards with the crew on breaks.
Know next to nothing about Cooper, before my time.

Monter Walsh for Lee Marvin, The Proffesionals a close second. As mentioned already, "The Westerner" with Gary Cooper because of how great he and Walter Brennan jived together. The romance part got hokey, though.

Don't let her limit your enjoyment of anything as long as she keeps her mouth shut on things she knows nothing about. If she changes your behavior one iota, then she wins. Jane has some talent(s), watch Barbarella. Thank you for going to the Vietnam, Republic of.

In most cases I'd happily agree with you. I don't chose where I eat, or what I do to entertain myself based on what anyone else says or does or their opinions or politics etc or how mad I am at at any given time. But in her case my hatred and rage are just too strong. She damaged a lot of good men and an entire nation. There can be no forgiveness. Not ever. Just to see a picture of her is enough to set me off. She is a disgrace and doesn't deserve to live in this great country. Or anywhere else as far as that goes.

I dont know about hanoi jane making amends.Jesse Watters recently tried to interview the :::::fill in the blank::::: but she definitely didnt look like she repented any.Watters asked her if she was sorry for visiting the enemy in Nam--she refused toreply and tried scooting along at a faster rate. Watters also asked how her father Henry--felt about her going to visit with the enemy. Her silent glare said it all. The only actual look she gave Watters--was when he asked about that famous pose photo of her on that enemy field piece. That one apparenty hit a deep nerve.

Trying to pick a top most Lee Marvin Western is like trying to choose a top John Wayne Western fave--impossible.
However--a few of the top favorites for me>
Pillars of the Sky, The Profesionals, Liberty Valance, The Comancheros, and a few others.
Top fave War Movie with Lee Marvin: The Big Red One.
Gary Cooper: Again--like trying to pick a top Duke movie.
He was great in everything and Iliked all his movies except for: Peter Ibbetson--which sucked Prune Pits.
Some great Coop movies:
Beau Geste.
Sergeant York.
The Wreck of the Mary Deere.
Pride of the Yankees.
Operator Thirteen.
Ball of Fire.
Mr.Deeds Goes To Town.
Along Came Jones.
They Came To Cordura.
The Westerner.
Unconquered.
Vera Cruz.
The Adventures of Marco Polo.
And ill stop for now. You get the gist of it.

Yep, we watched that one. Glenn Ford was a very intense actor and he was really good at twirling and fast-drawing a 6-gun. I can't think of a single movie I ever saw him in that wasn't good. He did make a "chick-flick" back in the late '60s with Angela Landsbury called Dear Heart. I didn't care for the movie but the heat and power of his performance was impossible not to notice. Saved that movie for me from being a total waste of time.

Ive never seen him give a bad performance yet--even though he was in a few bad movies like: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, A Time ForKilling.Killing had a young harrison Ford in it as a Cav officer--but what really ruined it--was that:::Max Baer::: "Jethro Bodine" was in it as a Confederate soldier. Jethro ruined the movie for me.
This thread is getting me in the mood for a Ford marathon. Think ill dig out: Three Ten to Yuma, Advance To the Rear, and Last Man From the Alamo.

I think that Marvin had a small role in "The Commancheros" with John Wayne. He was an indian trader with a vile temper and Wayne had to kill him fairly early in the movie. Not his best role, but other than Richard Boone, Marvin was the nastiest villain in western movies.
Does no one remember Cooper with the luscious Julie London in "Man of the West"?

I liked the movie with Charles Bronson as the wrongly accused murderer.
I can't recall the name of it though. Marvin played the old Mountie.

I was actually answering Jesse, in the post right above me. He said he could not remember the name of the movie about the Mountie going after the trapper.
It's a good movie. Not my favorite, but a good movie.
I must be one of the strange ones, though. I don't like Sergeant York. Probably because of the ending.
He's in New York. "Look at all these job offers, Alvin." THEY A'OFFERIN' ME THEM JOBS 'CAUSE'A ALL THEM GERMANS I KILT? "Yes, that's probably it." WELL I AIN'T A'GONNA DO IT. THAT WERE MY DUTY, AND I AIN'T A'GONNA TAKE NOTHIN' FOR DOIN' MY DUTY.
Then he goes home, and his girl is waiting, and they go see the farm he wanted to buy, and she tells him, "It's ourn, Alvin. Gived to you by the people o' the State of Tennessee."
Hmmmm. How is accepting the free farm, for killin' all them Germans, different from accepting a good-paying job, for killin' all them Germans?
Don't get me wrong. I'm not sayin' that York should have refused the farm (if, indeed, Tennessee really gave him a farm, and it wasn't Hollyweird nonsense), but for him to, in one scene, refuse a gratuity for killing the enemy, and then in the next scene accept a gratuity for the same killing of the enemy, just felt wrong.

The Cooper Family had a home in Helena MT just off the 800 block of Broadway Ave. They possibly had other homes in Helena.
The Ranch was about 45 miles north of Helena. In an area now called Dearborn.

Ha had to say Jane Fonda, here we go step by step, inch by inch, or is it BEETLEJUICE. If she did that during ww2 she would face the firing squad for sure treason. She's on the a list right?
Death Hunt
Sargent York
High noon the greatest from coop
All there movies, Marvin, Bronson, Cooper, Cagney, Bogart, Bacall, all of them I love Bacall in black and white movies. The women are so much more sexy.

My sister bought me the complete series "M" Squad, starring Lee Marvin. It was good.
But my favorite is "The Professionals".

We just don't have the great movies of yesteryear in the new movies of today.
There are only a few out standing actors left.
Eastwood
D Nero
Etc. Brain fade.
I would like to see the movie theaters run the old movies on the big screen again.
Monday closed
Tuesday western
Wednesday science fiction
Thursday original gangsta
Friday new movies
Saturday new movies
Sunday black n white movies.

Watched Cloak and Dagger last night. Coop was lecherous. Don't think I've ever seen him act that way before. He was an atomic scientist, in Italy trying to get another atomic scientist (who was working for the Germans) to defect. Meets up with this Italian partisan - Gina (Lili Palmer, hubba hubba) and tries desperately, in several scenes, to get "close" to her. BIG change from Professor Bertram Potts, in Ball of Fire, that I watched two days ago.

My favorite Lee Marvin movie was the Professionals. Only movie that I can remember seeing the star take the time to clean his firearms. In one scene he is servicing the Win 97.
If it's the same movie I liked Cooper in the Westerner where he interacted with Walter Brennan as Judge Roy Bean. Especially where Gary Cooper's character was served 'Rub o' the Brush".

Good grief, let's split some hairs:
First, the "jobs" were endorsements for products he knew nothing about.
Second, it is a bit of a tradition for a Medal of Honor recipients home town to do something for them.

My favorite movie with Lee Marvin is the Professionals with Monte Walsh a close second.
I have to go with High Noon being my favorite for Gary Cooper.
