Would You Buy a Gun Just For An Interesting Serial Number?
I don't know if maybe I'm just having withdrawl symtoms from having gone over 8 months without purchasing another gun... Here's the deal. There's a really nice S&W target K frame revolver at my local gun shop. It's beautifully blued and has TT, TH, TS. I already have something similar but what is urging me to go back and put in on layaway is that it has a ##777 serial number. I love that number. It not only has God's mark on it but I held it, dry fired a few times, inspected it all over and it even felt lucky, lol! Any of you guys ever bought a gun just because the serial numbers were in your favor? I'm wondering if I'm nuts to go put money down on this...

Like we need another excuse.....
I have told this story before so some have already heard it. I was at a gun shop in the weatern part of my stste picking up an internet win. While I was there, the owner asked me if I was in to S&W commeratives. He went on to say that he had just taken in a Texas Ranger and wanted to know if I would be interested. I replied that if the serial number had any 5's in it I might be. (my lucky number) He returned with the cased TR and indicated that the gun and knife were serial number TR 555.
The rest as they say is history. I have since found and added several other S&W's to my collection that have 2 or 3 fives in the number.
So, in answer to your question, YES...

I like "lucky" 7, too!
Might as well buy it, as it will just be worth a little more this time next year.

If it is/was a gun I had need for or the desire to own, the numbers are frosting on the cake! If there were two identical in all ways and one had an interesting number it would go home with me and the other would be an orphan.....unless it was consecutively numbered! Nick

I bought a model 64 that had my badge number in the serial set. Still have a 629-5 that I didn't need at the time but it had my daughter's birthday on it, so I bought it.
Trust me, there is nothing wrong with buying the numbers. Plus you get another gun for shooting!

I have sold a rifle to a guy that was turned on by the serial number. The only number that moves me to purchase is the price.

OP-
You sound like you've already made up your mind, or are trying to get us to talk you out of it...
However, to answer your question, no I haven't. I do have a buddy that would probably buy a Hi-point if the serial number ended in '13' though.

Round Number
Back in the early '60s, I bought a new Ruger 10/22 with SN 120000. Nice number.
I broke the pot metal barrel band while removing the barrel from the stock so I just sawed off the tip of the stock and made a sporter out of it.

I had a Glock 27 with thw S/N BUG 001. That was kinda cool, but I readily swapped it off for a no dash 57. I would probably buy a Highway Patrolman at an extra cost if the S/N ended in 833, 814, or 702. Those were my old badge numbers.
And I would take RegMag S/N 1...........

The answer to the O.P.'s question is no and I'm not likely to ever be swayed to purchase by a serial number. I would buy most any S&W that had an alpha-numeric serial of my initials any my birth date but you know how unlikely it would be to find such a gun.
To the O.P.: most of us usually buy guns that are very similar to ones that we already have. Just look at all the 1911 lovers that have multiple 5" 1911 .45s. It's called buying what you like. Put in on lay-a-way before someone else buys it or you'll regret it.

I was badge #237 for 20+ years and do have a pair of rifles with my old call sign as the serial; MHP237. One was a Commemorative they did with our call/ID and the other was a bolt rifle that allowed a custom serial if requested.
I saw an early Kit gun with 237 as the serial, tried to talk the owner out of it but no luck.
To those of us who operated as a number and not as a name...yes certain numbers are important.

Would You Buy a Gun Just For An Interesting Serial Number?
Bought an early model 640 with a serial number CEN00xx, one of the first 50 guns off the line in 1989. Best j frame trigger I've ever felt.

I bought these 4 S&W because all four had a single prefix letter and a

I bought a 1915 Triple Lock with a 6.5" bbl, in .44 special with
factory nickel finish that had the serial # 11444. I thought
that was pretty cool. Would have been better if it was serial
# 11144.

I have before and I will again. Low numbers are more attractive to me. Like my Centennial 157, or my Model 70 #202. Yes, I had a 666 and a 66,666. And I've got a 38/44 with 99357. Lots of others, too.

#777 is cool but.....
I consider 999 to be God's number. It's the opposite of 666

It would have to be pretty unique for me to buy it just based on S# but I know a few people who have. One guy I know has a collection of Glocks with 666 S#.

Ya but you forgot to tell her that the serial number was your wedding day. Come on guys you must be creative.
I also forgot to mention that I also bought a pre 17 K22 because the serial number was K 1722. That and the fact that it was a 4 digit made it very easy.

Sort of a tough question-buying a gun just because of the serial number.
Suppose it was a bolt-action Mossberg 12 ga. shotgun that had, for a serial number, the one number that really caught your attention like your birth date, your anniversary date (with the current spouse ) or 666 or, whatever.
Would you buy it? I suppose there are those who collect Mossberg or similar bolt-actions, but probably not many.
But I wouldn't buy it at most any price.
So, really, the gun first has to catch my attention enough to pick it up an examine it. Then, if I noted the serial number and that number "spoke" to me, maybe I'd buy it.
But, again, it would depend on brand/model, condition and, perhaps, caliber.
But, no bolt-action Mossbergs (heck, most oldies weren't serial numbered anyway).

Those just may be the original grips for this model 14 with the #777 serial number I am looking at! The grips on it right now are factory smooth targets which I don't think were on it originally. Let me know if you want to sell them
Really thinking about going back to the shop to layaway this weekend.

I bought a like new Model 59 for my son when he made Chief in the USN. That gun has 3-6's in the serial number. No problems so far and it's a great shooter.

I wouldn't buy a 666 (the number of the beast) but I would jump at a 667(the neighbor of the beast)...cause that's my present situation.

Like a 640-1 that has "357" in the SN? That wasn't the only reason I bought it, but it certainly ups the cool factor.

That would be a silly reason to buy a gun.
I have learned to avoid frivolous purchases of firearms by limiting myself to buying only on days of the week that end in "Y".

Well:
This Colt 25acp certainly has an interesting serial # 75075 so I guess that's the reason I bought it! I guess it wasn't all that important that it was engraved and had factory pearls!! The factory letter indicated that the engraving wasn't done by Colt and this pistol was shipped to a Mr Pena but there is no address given.

I bought a M586 within the last few weeks with an "AAA" s/n. May of over paid a bit ($585) since it's just a shooter not a pristine collectible, but I think it's cool to have one of the first L-frames.

Ive been kicking myself ever since I passed up buying a beat up Walther P-thirty eight whose serial number was: seven seven seven seven. It was offered to me for three hundred dollars but--I didnt get it because I already had three--and all in much better condition. Last I heard several years ago--that gun sold for--you guessed it--seven thousand dollars.
The only unique serial number I have on a gun is: two sixty one T. This is on my WWII German sniper rifle. This one has a twenty five round fixed magazine. As I was told by a USMC historian by the name of Dieter Stenger who researched my rifle--there were only a handfull of these made--less than fifty.

A clerk in a LGS spent most of his career in manufacturing pistols. He's been around the ranges forever and I knew him when he worked for a manufacturer that, other than their brand name still being used, is out of business. He says that while he had access to the serial numbering process at that manufacturer that for his own collection he made up one of each or their models with serial number 1. He hopes they're worth zillions.
I wonder if that's how the Kimber in the linked GB auction came to exist.

I don't think I ever bought one just because fo the serial number. But I have had an interesting number sway me when I was undecided on one.

First I'd have to like the gun, after that interesting serial # is a good a reason ( excuse, rationalization, karma ) as any.

What I think is a unique serial number may not be what others think is a unique serial number. I've seen several examples confirming this philosophy already posted in this thread . . .

I doubt I'd ever buy a gun for the serial number. For one thing my resources limit me to what I can buy and I'd rather concentrate on guns I like to shoot and/or for CCW. All of my guns, except for those of sentimental value have to work for a living. Meaning I shoot 'em all and don't have any so called safe queens. The pretty ones get their turn on the firing line. Takes more than a "pretty face" to get into my collection.

That Kimber serial number would be nice to have but $35,000 worth? I mean face it for a 1911 style in 45 ACP that's a cool number but $35,000 worth? Not in my place!

Yes. and have. I have an M1 Garand with a unique serial #. I mentioned it on a rifle forum. About once a year I get an e-mail from a gentleman that wants to buy that rifle. I have a friend that will not buy a gun with a number that ends in 3/7/9 unless it is something he can turn really fast or is so cheap he can't say no. He will pay a premium for a gun he wants if it ends in 0 or 5. And last but not least, who of us would not choose a N frame Smith with number that started with S, if we had a choice between one that started with S or a similar one that started with N?

I own a SD9 with the prefix HER0.
I think the fourth digit is a number instead of a letter.

Several years ago, I was asked to evaluate a collection for a local gentleman who was up in years and was anticipating moving to Assisted Living. I worked a couple of days on the project and gave him a written report. I presented the report and he wrote out a check for agreed amount. He then pulled out a S&W pre M 36 and said, "I forgot this one and you didn't get to evaluate it, so I want you to have it." I looked it over and thanked him and put it in my pocket. When I got home I went to my workbench to do a proper Armorer's check on it. To my surprise the actual serial number on frame, cylinder and grips was "12345". I kept that handgun for years and carried it and shot it a lot. Then a good friend offered me far more than what I thought it was worth even with the unusual serial number. ...............
