Default Justified: Raylan VS. Boon, Glock VS. Colt

I only watched the last two seasons of this. That was dumb on my part. Here's a good video featuring that gunfighter twerp "Boon" who I think stole the show whenever he was on screen. but their final showdown from the other night isn't here. The gun database on the show says he probably uses a Ruger Vaquero, but here you can see it's a real Colt.

Wyatt:

The final episode, and the entire series was highly entertaining. However, the scene with Boon and Loraine's "bodyguard" (and former boyfriend) troubles me. In their confrontation, Boon fast draws on him, and then drops the hammer on an empty chamber. He then explains that he carries with the hammer down on an empty chamber for safety (hence the "click"). Well, if that's the case, isn't he in fact carrying with the hammer down on a live round with the empty chamber next in rotation?

Regards,

Dave

I noticed that, too and said to my wife "gun blooper!" Also, after Boyd killed all those guys he aims at his girlfriend and his autoloader clicks double action a few times empty. Why wasn't the slide back after the last shot? This always get's my wife rolling her eyes.

You coulda heard me yell NOOOO three farms away when the girl kicked Boon's S A across that pavement !

I could not quite catch the name Boon gave his revolver, but I think it was Kate, or Katie. It had a hammer mounted firing pin in at least one view, but Colt or no, I couldn't say.

I just knew Boyd was going to be using explosives again sooner than later. If memory serves, his debut on the show was with the comment;"He likes to blow stuff up". (With the word stuff, filling in for that other term.)

I watched and enjoyed every episode and was introduced to the Raylan Givens character in a book by Elmore Leonard years ago.

F X is "stepping-up", in good gritty shows I think.

That guy really carried that gun well. I noticed in the clips above that the trigger guard is slightly thinned on the right side for his trigger finger to get to the trigger quicker once the gun is out.

Could be, but I attributed it to a failure-to-fire, as in a dud round in the chamber.

One of the greatest shoot-out scenes ever filmed was when Raylan blew Tommy Bucks from his crab cake dinner.I was a confirmed fan from that point!

I'm really gonna miss this series. Has been my favorite since it started! I agree that Boon was a scene-stealer, as were most of the bad guys on this show. That's what made it so good were the great baddies (Boyd of course, Mags and Dickie, Daryl Crowe Jr., Boon, and Avery Markham, just to name a few!)

The stage was set when Boone talked about head shooting due to body armor. He missed the head shot on Loraina's bodyguard and commented on it. The same target cost him his life, although the tie went to the one with the best hit. They had to scare us before Raylon lived.

I'm a bit disillusioned. Somehow, all this time, I've thought Raylan's gun was a Sig. Even kinda remember somebody saying something about 'his Sig' in some episode.
I just hate to think of a nasty ol' mud-fence-ugly Glock being a 'pistol artist's' gun. Coulda at least used a Springfield XD.....
(Don't take that 'pistol artist' crack too serious; I know it's as realistic as a Mall Ninja using the word 'operator'.) Acebow

Raylon had a Sig in the first episode. Soon switched to a Glock.

Ok, not a very realistic shoot out with Boon (if you think you are going to need your sidearm it's already in your hand) no such thing as a fair fight you know but entertaining with good results. Now for the thing that is bothering me, is Raylan's new hat Boon's or the fellow agents hat that was left at the office in a previous episode?

I would say; with all the attention paid to hats by Boon and Raylan, it almost has to be Boon's, with a little brim reshaping by Raylan.

My remaining mystery is Ava's connection to Wynn Duffy ?
Seems obvious Wynn used his "dog Care" truck; company named aptly, "Down on all fours", to spirit away Ava and the two duffel bags of moolah, that much I get.

What I do not recall, is any meeting between the two.??

All in all, my personal ranking of Justified is second only to Deadwood, and Justified had the upper hand in "catchy" dialog.

The new hat Raylan was wearing looked like Boon's.

Well, coupla comments on the above:

— About being unrealistic, 'cause you'd have gun in hand if you knew a shoot out was comin'.... Well, sure, but we are talking a contemporary cowboy classic here. Had to be a Gunsmoke showdown.

— Seems to me I have read that an SAA, for the first shot from a draw, is as fast as can be. Why is that? Maybe, because cocked, so little pressure on the trigger is needed?

— The Boone guy was good. I thought, as an actor. His best scene was the diner. He morphs from a doofus to anyone's worst nightmare in about two minutes of escalting tension. Great scene. Great acting!

— About the hat Raylan walks off with, I assumed it was Boone's. Then again, I don't even recall the show where another fellow left his hat in Raylan's office.

That was a fun show. I'll miss it.

I think she called him from the bridge just before Markham's two corrupt cops got her. If you remember, Winn was reported to be on some Island living the good life. My belief is Ava gave him the location of the remainder of Markham's money that Boyd stole to get out of Harlan undetected.

The writers of this show did an excellent job of foreshadowing the Raylan/Boone showdown. When Boone shoots Loretta's "boyfriend/bodyguard", he goes into the long spiel about why he does headshots and the problems that arise if you miss. Fast forward to the showdown. Boone's headshot is a flesh wound, Raylan's center of mass shot is fatal.

I believe the "new" hat may have been a Businessmans Stetson kinda like what Jack Ruby wore. That was what Leonard intended for Raylan but it didn't look right so they went more western.

I'm pretty sure it was. There is a little white spot on the edge of the brim of the hat that Boone was wearing. The same spot was on Raylan's "new" hat.

Speaking of hats, I couldn't tell if there was one hole in Raylan's Stetson or two.

Boone was the second guy to take a center-mass hit and sink to his knees. Same thing happened to Seabass, only Katherine Hale then shot him in the head before he could do anything more.

Does anyone know Raylan's caliber of choice?

I'm thinking the generic .40S&W govt. issue.

Yes they are the same hats... When asked about the new hat Raylan says something to the extent of "I just picked it up and it fit" Sounds to me like the old owner no longer had use for it.

Also look at the toothpick in the hat band, no doubt Raylan took Boone's hat.

I've got the entire series on my dvr, started recording it in the 3rd season and caught the first two in reruns so they're out of order.

Time to start watching it again from the start after I get home from nights at work. Need to print out the episode list to get the order right lol.

According to IMDb - Movies, TV and Celebrities - IMDb, Boon's gun is not a Colt but in fact a Ruger Vaquero, while a nice gun in its own right, certainly easier to replace if you kick it across the pavement. I loved this show, it's easy to laugh at some of the one liners because any of us in law enforcement long enough will tell you that while you see cops being formal on shows like COPS etc. when it comes to the truth, well, we have been less than polite and I have seen cops over the years and CO's come up with some interesting solutions to problems before, not illegal mind you, but certainly not something you want the bosses to know about all the time. I remember one cop who had an inmate complaining about going to court politely open the trunk to his patrol car and told the inmate to get in because he had a long ride and he wasn't about to listen to whining. The inmate looked back at me and my Sergeant and said "Are you going to let him do that?", my response was, "Let him, we're going to help him." The inmate never said a word. It was Raylen's unique solutions that made the show likable, and the acting as a whole.

I think IMFDB has it wrong. At least one of the photos on the Justified Season 6 page would seem to show a hammer-mounted firing pin on Boon's revolver.

This is the photo, cropped down:

That guy is just creepy--and I don't ever use that word. Good casting choice. Acebow

Default Shoot out

The shoot out was awesome. I liked the way Raylan handled finding Ava and how he dealt with Boyd in prison. A great show and a great finale.

Timothy Oliphant did an interview with the NY Times and said he keep the new hat, not the old one. Elmore Leonard didn't like the original hat, so they decided as part of the finale to "kill" the original one and replace it with the type Leonard wanted. Also I believe what he tells Rachel on the way out at the end about the new hat is the same thing he said when he first met her in Ep 1 and she asked about the hat.
