People's vocabulary skills certainly are lacking

Someone help,id like to find the perfect post in this thread--just to be able to incorporate the word: Apoplexy. :D

My 21 year old son had no idea what a bumbershoot is.
He also didn't know what a Lustrum is.
However he DID know what a Fortnight is.

Are you kidding, I don't even speak decent jive! I thought most of these words you guys are coming up with was stuff I got vaccinated for in first grade!

These weren't kids.
First was a Woman who told me she was 63. Next was a Woman who is in her early 50s. I teased he and told her I'm sure her Dad, who is a friend of mine, would know. Saw him later. He is a retired Pastor, probably almost 80. He also had no idea what a bumbershoot is.
I was so disappointed.
Jim

Oh, you mean like those people that went through high school and somehow didn't learn anything while they were there.
Pass a test.....forget everything learned up to that point. Go to class with a clean slate. Repeat.

A bumbershoot is when you and a pal or two are sitting on your veranda, partaking of adult beverages, BB pistol handy, and observing bumblebees in the garden...

(Well, that is what it ought to mean anyway.)

Why use one or two words to describe something when a dozen will suffice?
Actually a good vocabulary can help you to express your thoughts succinctly - rather than having to be verbose.

See how well that works? I used the word succinctly instead of having to type "using fewer words" and I used the word verbose instead of having to type "using a lot of words".

An example of the benefits of a larger vocabulary!

EDIT: I mis-read your post the first time Snapping Twig. Now that I re-read it I see we were on the same page all along!

Babushka is an interesting word. You and I may think of it as an article of clothing worn on the head. A Polish friend of mine uses the word to refer to the older ladies of the community.
It is actually a Russian word meaning Grandmother.

I suggest everyone who is linguistically challenged to watch "My Fair Lady" and please cease the disgusting habit of transforming nouns into verbs
