Some idiot fires off a fireworks mortar from the top of his head and it kills him. I haven't seen any exact description of what the device was, but it must have been fairly large. It was mentioned that the mortar was "reloadable." So the idiot's mother whines and cries that the fault was the availability of fireworks, and wants them banned. Sound familiar?

If we make a law against shooting fireworks off heads, this would never happen again. We know that all laws are obeyed.

Thanks to folks like that, now I can not just go out and buy dynamite whenever I want. Terrible. I have squirrels to kill.

The local news said it was a dud, that he picked up put on his head as a joke, and it stopped being a dud. I agree more laws is not the answer, to lack of common sense.

First, I'm sorry that the parents lost their child.

Second, perhaps the parents should have spent a little more time teaching sonny that when you do really stupid things, the end game does not always have a nice finish.

Maybe 30 years ago or so an actor named Jon Eric Hexom was inbetween scenes of his TV show and he took a .44 magnum loaded with blanks and joking around, put it to his temple and pulled the trigger. I know my FEELINGS about stunts like the fireworks guy did, as well as Wyatt Burp's example, are harsh, seemingly lacking in compassion at all.

But of late, when some yo-yo does something like that I just shrug and think goodness the stupid act did not involve me or my loved ones.

Pretty much the same attitude I have when some "idgit" wants to pet a grizzly, or get a closer picture of a bull moose and it ends badly.

I thought he would have been taught what the blank pistol does, so that he didn't shoot someone close up. Hard to believe the prop man would have handed it to him without instruction. So I figured, most likely, he was just stupid.

We live in interesting times. Not because there has never been any one in times past who did something stupid, but because the number of people doing stupid things today seems to have increased beyond belief. Perhaps what we need is some more regulations on who can or cannot have children! When a kid doesn't get any motherwit from his mother, and gets no demonstrations of common sense from his dad (if he actually knows who his dad is!), that kid is pretty much a constant danger to himself and anyone else he or she is around.

My wife recently bought a steam iron to replace the one she has worn out. In the paperwork which contains the safety warnings for using the iron, one of the statements was this: "DO NOT IRON CLOTHING WHILE WEARING THEM!" Why would this warning be included with the iron unless somebody, or several somebodies, has done this and then claimed the maker of the iron was at fault for failure to give them warning?

As I said, we live in interesting times. As a teacher I know was wont to state, "Rocks make little rocks!"

Interesting that the more laws we pass, and the more safety labels we mandate, the more people get hurt. We have a whole generation of people who don't know that their safety is their own responsibility.

Still I feel for his family. There are 100's of times in my life that I could have been deleted from the gene pool myself! I would not have wanted my mom and dad to have to endure the endless ridicule by total strangers these folks are dealing with.
