Was in WVA this week and saw this sign on wall in the office of
a business. Inquired where it was bought from, they didn't know.

Simple explanation........business started by Captain Augustus "Gus" McCrae and Captain Woodrow F. Call when they moved east years ago!!

I love the Lonesome Dove Series. I recently got a boxed set of the Lonesome Dove Collection. It has the original series along with the sequel, Return to Lonesome Dove (1993), with Jon Voight stepping into the Jones role as Call, joining forces with his son Newt to ward off some violent fellow ranchers. Streets of Laredo (1995) casts James Garner in the Call role, as the character attempts to bring a psychopathic killer to justice. Finally, Dead Man's Walk constitutes a prequel to the original Lonesome Dove, following Gus and Woodrow's adventures as young cowboys.

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Those are some dern good flicks... that along with being very entertaining that teach the importance of responsibility & having a good ethos to live by ...whoever did the casting on them did a superb job on each one.

Not too surprised.
Their Cross country navigation was not that good.
When they thought they were in Montana they were actually in Black Lake, NM.
I also have the entire collection.

You forgot another prequel...

Comanche Moon (2008)... with Steve Zahn (sp?) as Gus and Karl Urban as Woodrow... also has Val Kilmer playing a role. The three-part mini-series is on AMC right now... this very minute.

I had my doubts about those actors since I was pretty spoiled with Mr. Duvall and Mr. Jones. But I gotta tell ya, Comanche Moon is brilliant. The acting - brilliant!

The Latin phrase that appears on the Hat Creek Cattle Company sign in “Lonesome Dove” is a garbled corruption, and there’s no direct translation. It derives from the scholia to Juvenal 2.81 which cites the proverb “uva uvam videndo varia fit” This means something like “a grape changes color [i.e., ripens] when it sees [another] grape.”

Novelist Larry McMurtry probably intentionally misused the Latin, perhaps to make a point about Augustus McCrae’s tenuous understanding of the language.

From there, any number of interpretations have arisen to explain why McMurtry chose to communicate that particular idea. Probably the soundest theory is that the phrase serves as a metaphor for the group’s journey, as many of the story’s characters go through a process of personal maturation and development. Much like grapes ripen in the presence of others.

Here is the original (best pic I could get). It's at the Texas State Library in San Marcos along with a nice collection of movie items - like Gus and Woodrow's wardrobe items standing there.

I highly recommend the books. I actually like Commanche Moon better than Lonesome dove. Great story telling indeed! Ahmundo was a BAD mother......

SURE ! ....Call plainly said it was an invitation for "some bandit to rob us"; which caused Gus to retort: "well, I wish he would, I'd like a chance to shoot an educated man just once".

I would proudly make a space on a wall in my fortress of solitude to hang that. I never cared much for the tv series...seemed like a cheap rip off to me. But the books and movies are about my favorites. I might have one or two I like a s well but only one or two and there aren't any I like better.

That sign, if you are familiar with the stories, seems to me to represent/sympolize the stories and characters in the same way that the American flag represents/symbolizes the United States Of America. And it is waaaay cool too.

It is quite a "stretch" for McMurtry to have to his credit, a connection as a principle part of movies,(or T V series) such as this random list.

Lonesome Dove, about the old west.

Terms of Endearment, about a retired astronaut.

The Last Picture show, about 1950s teens.

Brokeback Mountain, about, a camping trip ????

Tears of joy and gratitude began to roll down my gray-stubbled cheeks as I read this post. I has bugged me off and on since I first read the original book.
